Hey everyone! Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Batgirl at Super Hero High by Lisa Yee (January 3, 2017 – Random House Books for Young Readers). This book was an incredibly fun read, so I’m really excited to be a part of this blog tour! I hope you enjoy my review!

~*~*~*~*~

I’ve loved every book in this series so much and they just keep getting better! The plot was intriguing, the characters are likable/relatable and the writing is great! I really love that Batgirl doesn’t have super powers, that she’s a regular girl struggling to be a super hero while staying true to herself. It makes her more relatable and it makes you want to root for her even more.

I’m getting more and more intrigued by all the “super heroes” who become villains. With some of them, you can tell they’re not super hero material because they’re a bit (or more) mean and nasty. They don’t use their powers for good. But then others, like Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, are kind, funny and have so many friends. It just makes me wonder what the tipping point was for them. What made them “turn” evil? On a similar note, I still desperately want Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn books – Especially since, for the first time, Harley Quinn showed a different side of herself, more like the “grown-up” version of her we know from the DC Comics.

All the tech stuff in this book was crazy! Also, very realistic – in the sense that, we rely so heavily on technology, it would be scary if it completely shut down or starting acting haywire. It really makes you stop and think!

As I mentioned in my reviews for Wonder Woman and Supergirl, as someone who didn’t devour the DC comics, I was definitely a little bit behind on who everyone was and what some of the references were – though it’s getting easier to remember everyone with every book I read. As I’ve mentioned in the previous reviews, I think this book’s level of entertainment would have been upped a notch if I HAD read the comiccs, but I never felt like I was at a disadvantage because I hadn’t read them.

The ending of this book was the most intriguing thus far, with a very puzzling cliffhanger that has me eager for the next book! It was a short, fast read that I highly recommend to anyone who loves the DC comics, as well as to anyone who wants to get into the comics, but who wants a quick and easy introduction to the characters first!

..
..

Here it is!

Isn’t it gorgeous?!?!?!?! I LOVE it!!! And now here’s the official synopsis!

When Ryder Marsden and Jemma Cafferty return to Magnolia Branch for Christmas break following their first semester at their respective universities in New York City (Columbia and NYU), their secret relationship is revealed—they’re literally caught under the mistletoe, kissing. Unexpectedly, their parents—who’ve spent their entire lives pushing them together—are somehow less than thrilled, especially when they realize the depth of their deception.

Tensions mount as the Marsden and Cafferty families struggle to come to terms with Jemma’s and Ryder’s feelings for each other, especially as they prepare to send them back to New York City together. At the same time, Jemma and Ryder must face their own problems that have arisen as a result of attending different schools—there are jealousies to be sorted out and hurt feelings to mend if their relationship is going to stand the test of time.

Will their love last, or are they star-crossed lovers, after all?

~*~*~*~

And now for the excerpt!

Laura Grace nods and turns toward Ryder and me. “You two kids try and play nice for a little bit. Dinner’s in fifteen minutes—get yourselves cleaned up and to the dining room by then, okay?”

“Got it,” Ryder murmurs.

And off they go, leaving us totally and blissfully alone.

Ryder sidles up beside me. “So, last night was nice,” he says, his breath warm against my ear.

Shivers race down my spine. “Yes, it was.”

“Think you can sneak out again tonight?”

“Probably. You know my parents—always in bed by ten.”

He runs a hand through his dark hair, leaving it sticking up in all directions. “How am I going to last until then? Sitting at the dinner table across from the prettiest girl in the world and not allowed to touch her?”

“Well, would you look at that…” I tip my head toward the doorway, where a sprig of mistletoe is conveniently hanging. “Should we risk it? Maybe if we’re really quick?”
His dark eyes spark with mischief, and I grab his hand and dash toward the door, dragging him with me as I position myself directly under the waxy green leaves.

“You sure like to live dangerously, Jemma Cafferty,” he says, wrapping his arms around me.

I rise up on tiptoe, my head tipped back as I gaze up at him adoringly. “Shut up and kiss me, Ryder Marsden.”

His kiss is gentle at first—almost tentative. But then…it’s like the room falls away and there’s nothing left, nothing but me and Ryder and this kiss that literally steals away my breath and turns my knees to Jell-O and my brain to mush.

And that’s pretty much when all hell breaks loose.

Final spoiler warning!!! Okay, review time!

~*~*~

I’m going to break my review down into Atmosphere, Cast, Pet Peeves and Favorite Scenes, and Overall Thoughts.

Atmosphere:
All I really have to say here is, I still can’t get over the inconsistencies in the house. I know I harped on this last time, but I just can’t.

Cast:
As I did last time, I’m going to break this down by actor/actress. In some cases, I’ll be talking more about the character than the actor/actress (or vice versa). It’s just easier! So:

Candace Cameron Bure: Candace Cameron still can’t act. I know I said it last time, but she just seems really uncomfortable with some of the things she has to say and do. That habit she has of raising her voice at the end of a sentence, like she’s asking a question, even when she isn’t? Still happening and still annoying. Her Danny-isms were even more obvious in season two and it was almost out of hand, like they were trying to make it as obvious as possible that she had turned out like him. I think we got the picture – they can tone it down now. I did like DJ’s overall storyline this season, though, and I felt sooo bad for her near the end, with the whole Steve/Matt thing. I will say, at times, her comedic timing was brilliant and she had some great lines! Example, said to Kimmy: “My son’s best friend is a pain in the butt… Oohhh, now I know how my dad felt about you.”

Jodie Sweetin: Jodi’s acting is the best so far, in my opinion. But I’m a bit biased because, as I’ve mentioned, Stephanie has always been my favorite. I’m really happy she found love this season, but I was really thrown by WHO she found love with. He just didn’t seem her type.. However, he made her happy and I’m very excited to see where their relationship goes in season three! Also, I looooved when she sang! She’s got a great voice!

Andrea Barber: Once again, Andrea Barber was hilarious and on point as Kimmy. Her acting hasn’t really improved much since season one, but she completely embodies her character.

Scott Weinger: I don’t have much to say about Steve. I didn’t like him in season one and I don’t like him now. He and DJ just don’t belong together anymore. I loved them together in the original show, but they’ve just outgrown each other. And that “revenge girlfriend” thing he pulled was atrocious.

John Brotherton: Still love Matt! He’s got great comedic timing, he and DJ have great chemistry, and he’s hilarious! “I can’t feel a thing below my waist and that worries me.”

Juan Pablo Di Pace: Fernando was, once again, hilarious and perfect. His acting and comedic timing were brilliant. I loved his chemistry with Kimmy and I LOVED LOVED LOVED their couple costume for Halloween!!!! It was perfection. Also, his butting heads with Max was HILARIOUS and was the only redeeming thing for Max, who I otherwise couldn’t stand (see below).

The New Kids:
–Ramona (Soni Bringas): I still liked Ramona a lot. I love that she and Jackson, for the most part, get along. They’re like partners in crime! I love their scheming.
–Jackson (Michael Campion): Some of my favorite moments were the DJ and Jackson moments. They were sweet and cheesy and a bit touching. Also, for some inexplicable reason, they made me cry, or at least WANT to cry. I have no idea why, but there you go. Also, the kid who played Jackson’s best friend (Popco?) is hilarious. He was a real smooth-talker, exactly as I imagine Uncle Jesse was at his age.
–Max (Elias Harger): Max is now my least favorite person for that corn cob incident. I’ve had a dog nearly die from swallowing a corn cob. So I’m just done. Maybe that’s not fair because he’s a kid and he should have been taught that corn cobs are bad for dogs, maybe the fault lies with DJ. But that’s just how I feel. I wasn’t really crazy about him to begin with, so this just furthered those feelings. Also, can he please stop screaming and growling his lines! So obnoxious!!!

The Original Cast Adults: The original cast was… Just okay. Once again, their scenes felt awkward and out of place, like they were trying desperately to make them relevant. And since when does Joey have kids?!?! Was that mentioned in season one and I just forgot? Because what the heck?!?! And why were they so bratty?!?!?! And Joey, in general, once again felt like he was just there because fans would riot if they didn’t bring back all the original actors.

Pet Peeves and Favorite Scenes:
Pet Peeves:
**Biggest Pet Peeve this season: What was with the “Dumb as dirt for comedic effect” trope? So many of the characters suffered from it, like Jimmy and – to a certain extent – Fernando and Kimmy. It was almost insulting how overused it was. It wasn’t this bad in season one and I REALLY hope they tone this down in season three!

**Overall, the show was still campy and cheesy. Possibly campier and cheesier than season one. Probably because of the “Dumb as Dirt” trope (above).

**Some of the lines and punch lines were delivered WAY too fast. And the sudden entrances were almost TOO convenient. It adds to the cheesiness.

**The swearing with antacids “holy mylanta” thing is getting REALLY old REALLY fast. It’s totally fine if an actor doesn’t want to swear, but it sounds ridiculous and is WAY overused.

Favorite Scenes:
**The flashbacks to DJ’s, Stephanie’s and Kimmy’s first kisses packed a punch of nostalgia. So did Steph talking about her “three dads” in the wedding crasher scene.

**DJ and Kimmy’s high school reunion was also packed with nostalgia and perfectly on point!

**Gia and Girl Talk! I know Gia was a horrible influence on Stephanie, and also a horrible bully. But I love Marla Sokoloff and I love her character. And we’ve established that I love when Stephanie sings, so I loved Girl Talk being back together, brief as it was.

**The Dwayne cameo is EPIC, for so many reasons. Also Viper and Nelson, but I wish Jason Marsden had reprised his role as Nelson. I know he chose not to return, but it still sucked.

**Uncle Jesse and Aunt Becky naming their adopted baby after Pam made me sob so hard… I can’t even.

Overall Thoughts:
Though still packed with cheesiness, the amount of nostalgia you’ll feel will win you over. If you were a fan of season one, I think you’ll love season two. If you didn’t enjoy season one… Maybe put this one on the back-burner for a bit. As far as the future of this show, it was recently announced that there would be a season three and I absolutely can’t wait! What can I say? Full House was a HUGE part of my childhood and I absolutely love this revival, cheeseball moments and all!

About A.G. Howard:

A.G. Howard was inspired to write SPLINTERED while working at a school library. She always wondered what would’ve happened had the subtle creepiness of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland taken center stage, and she hopes her darker and funkier tribute to Carroll will inspire readers to seek out the stories that won her heart as a child.

When she’s not writing, A.G.’s pastimes are reading, rollerblading, gardening, and family vacations which often include impromptu side trips to 18th century graveyards or condemned schoolhouses to appease her overactive muse.

And now here’s the excerpt!

5. carnival

Unlike many of the other members of the sideshow, I didn’t have a specific job. My mom was a fortune- teller, Gideon did a magic show, Zeke had his tigers, Brendon and his family did acrobatics, Seth was a strongman. My best friend Roxie Smith was in two acts— she helped out Zeke, and did a peepshow revue with two other girls.

I had no talent. No special ability, making me essentially a roadie. I did what was needed of me, which usually involved helping set up and take down, and various menial tasks. I cleaned the tiger cages and emptied out latrines when I had to. It wasn’t a glamorous job, but it was crucial to our way of life.

Since Roxie worked with the tigers, Mahilā actually tolerated her. Roxie was helping me clean out the tiger cage they traveled in. The cage was open to a fenced-in enclosure Seth had built, so the tigers could roam as they pleased.

Safēda lounged in the grass, the sun shining brightly on her white fur. Whenever we stopped, Safēda seemed content to just lay in the sun, sleeping the entire time, but as the older tiger, it made sense.

Mahilā paced along the fence, occasionally emitting an irritated guttural noise in between casting furtive glances back toward Roxie and me. Her golden fur was mottled with scars from her past life in the abusive circus, including a nasty one that ran across her nose.

“So where did you go last night?” Roxie asked, her voice lilting in a sing song playful way. She was out in the run, using a hose to fill up a blue plastic kiddie pool so the tigers could play in it, while I was on my hands and knees scrubbing dung off the cage floor.

Her bleached blond hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and the sleeves of her white T- shirt were rolled up, revealing her well-toned arms. The cut- off jean shorts she wore barely covered her bum, and her old cowboy boots went up to her knees— her chosen footwear anytime she was at risk of stepping in tiger poop.

With fair skin, full lips, large blue eyes, and a dainty nose, Roxie was pretty and deceptively tough. Being a beautiful carnie was not an easy job, and dancing in the revue under the stage name “Foxy Roxie” didn’t help that. But she made decent money doing it, and Roxie never put up with anybody’s crap. I’d seen her deck guys much bigger than her and lay them out flat on their backs.

“I was just at a party,” I said as I rinsed the brush off in a bucket of bleach and warm water.

“A party?” Roxie looked over at me with a hand on her hip.

“How’d you get invited to a party so fast?”

I shrugged. “I was just exploring town, and I saw some people hanging outside of this big house party, and they invited me in.”

“So what are the people like here? Are they nice?”

Safēda had gotten up and climbed into the pool, and then she flopped down in it, splashing Roxie as she did. Roxie took a step back, but kept looking at me.

“I don’t know. The people I met last night seemed nice, and they were superrich, so that bodes well for the town, I guess.”

“Like how rich?” Roxie asked.

“Like their house is practically a mansion.” I dropped the brush in the water and sat back on my knees, taking a break to talk to her. “It was the nicest house I’ve ever been in, hands down.”

“Is that why you spent the night there?”

Roxie understood my fascination with houses. Well, “understood” wasn’t the right word. It was more like she knew of it, but didn’t understand it all. She’d grown up in an upper- middleclass family, in nice houses with basements, and thought they were about as boring and lame as she could imagine.

“Partly.” I nodded. “It was a really amazing house. There were pillars out front, and the front hall was bigger than my trailer.”

“It’s just a house, Mara.” Roxie shook her head.

“I know but . . .” I trailed off, trying to think of how to explain it to her. “You know how you felt when you first joined the sideshow two years ago? How everything seemed so exciting and fun, and I was like, ‘We live in cramped trailers. It kinda sucks.’”

Roxie nodded. “Yeah. But I still think this life is a million times better than my old life. I get to see everything. I get to decide things for myself. I can leave whenever I want. There’s nothing to hold me back or tie me down.”

She’d finished filling up the pool, so she twisted the nozzle on the hose to shut it off. Stepping carefully over an old tire and a large branch that the tigers used as toys, she went to the edge of the run and tossed the hose over the fence, before Mahilā
decided to play with it and tore it up.

She walked over to the cage and scraped her boots on the edge, to be sure she didn’t track any poop inside, before climbing up inside it.

“So what was the other reason?” Roxie asked.

I kept scrubbing for a moment and didn’t look up at her when I said, “Gabe.”

“Gabe?” Roxie asked. “That sounds like a boy’s name.”

“That’s because it is.”

“Did you have sex with him?”

“No.” I shot her a look. “We just made out a little.”

“What what what?” Luka Zajiček happened to be walking by just in time to hear that, and he changed his course to walk over to the tiger cage. “Is that what you were up to last night?”

“That’s what sucks about living in a community so small. Whenever anything happens, everybody knows about it right away,” I muttered.

Luka put his arms through the cage bars and leaned against it, in the area I’d cleaned already. Since he was rather short, the floor came up to his chest, and his black hair fell into his eyes.

His eyes were the same shade of gray as mine, but his olive skin was slightly lighter than mine. We first met him when he joined the carnival four years ago, and the first thing my mom said was that she was certain that we were related somehow.

Unfortunately, Mom knew next to nothing about our family tree to be able to prove it. All she could really tell me was that we were a mixture of Egyptian, Turkish, and Filipino, with a bit of German thrown in for good measure.

Luka had been born in Czechoslovakia, but he’d moved here with his family when he was young, so he’d lost his accent.

He had recently roped me into helping him with a trick. He’d stand with his back against a wall, while I fired a crossbow around him. Originally, Blossom had been the one to help him, but she kept missing and shooting him in the leg or arm, so he’d asked me to do it because I had a steadier hand.

“So you made out with some local guy last night?” Luka asked, smirking at me. “Are you gonna see him again?”

“He’s a local guy. What do you think?” I asked, and gave him a hard look.

Luka shrugged. “Sometimes you bump into them again.”

“And that goes so well when they find out that I work and live with a traveling sideshow,” I said.

The floor was spotless, or at least as spotless as tiger cages can get, and I tossed my brush in the bucket and took off my yellow rubber gloves.

“We can’t all meet our boyfriends in the sideshow,” I reminded Luka as I stood up, and it only made him grin wider. He’d been dating Tim— one of the Flying Phoenixes— for the past three months.

“But you didn’t see Blossom anywhere in town last night?” Roxie asked, and Luka’s smile instantly fell away.

A sour feeling stirred in my stomach, and I looked out around camp through the bars of the cage, as if Blossom would suddenly appear standing beside a trailer. As I’d been doing my chores all morning, I kept scanning the campsite for her, expecting her to return at any moment with a funny story about how she’d gotten lost in town.

But so far, she hadn’t. And the longer she went without coming back, the worse the feeling in my stomach got. I shook my head. “No. I didn’t see her at all last night.”

“She’s gotta turn up, though, right?” Luka asked. “I mean, it’s not like there are really that many places she could’ve gone considering she has no money or car and she’s in a small town.”

The tigers were still down in the run, so I opened the side gate and hopped down out of the cage. Roxie got out behind me, then we closed the door.

“I should talk to Gideon,” I decided as Roxie locked the cage up behind me. “It’s not like Blossom to do this.”

“It’s not totally unlike her, though,” Roxie pointed out.

“When we were in Toledo six months ago, she dis appeared for a few days with that weird commune, and came back just before we were leaving, totally baked out of her mind.”

Blossom had grown up with parents who pretended to be hippies but were really just a couple of drug addicts. That— along with her unexplainable telekinesis— led to her dabbling with drugs and alcohol at a young age, before the state intervened and shipped her off to a group home.

My mom tried to keep her clean of her bad habits, but sometimes Blossom just liked to run off and do her own thing. That wasn’t that unusual for people who lived in the carnival.

“But if you’re worried, you should talk to Gideon,” Roxie suggested. “Luka’s right in that Blossom really couldn’t have gone far. Maybe you can scope out Caudry.”

“Since that sounds like a mission that may take a bit of time, can you help me and Hutch with the museum before you talk to Gideon?” Luka asked. “The exit door is jammed, and we can’t get it open, and Seth is busy helping set up the tents.”

“Sure. Between me and Mara, I’m sure the two of us can get the door unstuck,” Roxie said.

I dropped off the bucket with the other tiger supplies, and then followed Roxie and Luka away from our campsite to the fairgrounds on the other side of a chain- link fence. We always stayed close to the rides, the midway, and the circus tent, but we didn’t actually sleep there. It was much better for every one if we kept our private lives separate from the crowds.

Many of the games were already set up, and the Ferris wheel was in the process of being erected as we passed. Near the end of the midway was a long black trailer painted with all kinds of frightening images of werewolves and specters, along with happier pictures of mermaids and unicorns, and the sign was written in bloodred:

Beneath that were several smaller signs warning “Enter at your own risk. The creatures inside can be DISTURBING and cause NIGHTMARES.”

The entrance to the left was open, but the exit door at the other end was still shut. Wearing a pair of workman’s gloves, Hutch was pulling at the door with all his might. His neon green tank showed that his muscles were flexed and straining in effort. The bandana kept his dark brown hair off his face, but sweat was dripping down his brow.

“Let me have a try, Hutch,” Roxie said.

“What?” He turned to look back at her. “Door’s stuck.”

“I can see that. That’s why I said let me have a try.”

“Okay.” Hutch shrugged and stepped back.

Hutch’s real name was Donald Hutchence, but nobody ever called him anything but Hutch. He didn’t have any special powers, unless you considered being really agreeable and easygoing a super power, so, like me, he was left doing whatever else needed to be done.

Roxie grabbed the door and started pulling on it, and when it didn’t budge, I joined her.

“Luka, go and push from the inside,” Roxie commanded through gritted teeth.

Both Luka and Hutch went inside, pushing as Roxie and I pulled. And then all at once, the door gave way, and we all fell back on the gravel. I landed on my back, scraping my elbow on the rocks.

Roxie made it out unscathed, and Hutch fell painfully on top of me, so he’d avoided injury. Luka crashed right on the gravel, though, and the rocks tore through his jeans and ripped up his knees and the palms of his hands pretty badly.

“Do you need me to get a Band- Aid or anything?” Hutch asked as he helped me to my feet.

“No, I’ll be okay.” I glanced over at Luka and the blood dripping down his knees. “What about you? Do you want anything?”

“Nah. Just give it a few minutes.” Luka waved it off and sat down on the steps leading up to the museum door.

No matter how many times I saw it, I couldn’t help but watch. His knee was shredded, with bits of gravel sticking in the skin. Right before my eyes, the bleeding stopped, and the rocks started falling out, as if pushed by his flesh, and the skin grew back, reattaching itself where it had been little mangled flaps.

Within a few minutes, Luka’s knee was healed completely.

2016 End of Year Book Survey

Wow, 2016 seriously FLEW by. It was a really stressful, heartbreaking year and I’m really glad it’s coming to an end. I know the beginning of 2017 is going to be pretty bumpy, too, but I’m still hopeful it’ll be better than 2016 was!

This survey is hosted by the lovely Jamie @ The Perpetual Page Turner. All questions and images belong to her! Thanks, Jamie!!

So, here we go!

Number Of Books You Read: 57 (This is the least number of books I’ve read in a year in a LONG time.. Stupid reading slump! Sigh)
Number of Re-Reads: 8.5 (I’m in the middle of a re-read right now but won’t finish before midnight)
Genre You Read The Most From: Sci-Fi/Fantasy, retellings, etc. My usual :)

1. Best Book You Read In 2016? I have two. They are a 100% tie. First was A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas. THIS BOOK WAS UTTER PERFECTION AND IT BROKE ME. The second is actually a 2017 release, and that is Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones. THIS BOOK IS INTOXICATING AND BEAUTIFUL AND IT HAS LEFT ME BREATHLESS!

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t? Heartless by Marissa Meyer. I’m still sad panda that I didn’t enjoy it more.

3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read? Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige. I really hated Dorothy Must Die, so I was shocked I enjoyed Stealing Snow so much!

4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)? A Court of Mist and Fury and Wintersong! Even though I read them at the end of the year, I pushed them a LOT once I read them!

5. Best series you started in 2016? Best Sequel of 2016? Best Series Ender of 2016? Best series I started was The Conquerors Saga from Kiersten White, with book one being And I Darken. We have so few historical fiction novels in YA that are PURE historical fiction – it was refreshing!.

Best sequel of 2016 is A Court of Mist and Fury!!!!!

Best series ender was The Lost Codex by Heather Lyons. SO EPIC AND SO MANY FEELS!

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2016? Oh, I can’t name just one! I discovered several: Marieke Nijkamp, Evelyn Skye, Gena Showalter, Roshani Chokshi, Kendare Blake, CJ Redwine and Jessica Cluess.

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone? Honestly, I didn’t really read anything out of my comfort zone this year, thanks to a reading slump that effected my reading for months.

8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year? This should be obvious by now.. A Court of Mist and Fury!!!

9. Book You Read In 2016 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year? *Points at question 8*

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2016?

11. Most memorable character of 2016? Definitely Feyre from A Court of Mist and Fury. She’s SO FIERCE and EPIC.

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2016? I’d have to say Wintersong! The writing is gorgeous, haunting, intoxicating – just utterly amazing.

13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2016? This Is Where It Ends by Marieke Nijkamp. I’m still not over this one.

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2016 to finally read? I didn’t read a lot of back-list, so I can’t answer this. Though I’m sorry I waited so long to read A Court of Mist and Fury! But that was only by a few months.

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2016? From My Lady Jane:

“Was that a horse joke?”
“Neigh.”

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2016?
Longest: A Court of Mist and Fury (624)
Shortest: Proposal (The Mediator, #6.5) by Meg Cabot (144)

17. Book That Shocked You The Most A Court of Mist and Fury, hahaha.

18. OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!). FEYRE AND RHYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

19. Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year Feyre and Mor in A Court of Mist and Fury

20. Favorite Book You Read in 2016 From An Author You’ve Read Previously A Court of Mist and Fury!!! Duh!!! ^_^

21. Best Book You Read In 2016 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure: Hmmm… I don’t think I had any book that I read SOLELY based on a recommendation. But recommendations aided in my decisions to read certain books.

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2016? Definitely Magnus from A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess!

23. Best 2016 debut you read? A Shadow Bright and Burning!

24. Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year? Absolutely Wintersong. No contest (Although the Night Court in A Court of Mist and Fury is a very close second!).

25. Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read? A Court of Mist and Fury!

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2016? A Court of Mist and Fury!

27. Hidden Gem Of The Year? Queen of Hearts by Colleen Oakes. I think it got lost because Heartless came out this year. But Queen of Hearts was WAY better.

28. Book That Crushed Your Soul? A Court of Mist and Fury

29. Most Unique Book You Read In 2016? Hmm.. Probably And I Darken, since – again – it’s a very rare, PURE historical fiction novel. And YA needs more of those.

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad? Harmony House. The rage is real. I’m still raging over this one.

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2016? I was sadly disconnected from the blogging world this year, so I didn’t discover any new ones.

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2016? Does it surprise anyone that the answer is A Court of Mist and Fury?

3. Best discussion/non-review post you had on your blog? My “The Many Ships of Reign” blog tour post. Because Reign!

4. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)? I didn’t actually attend any interesting events or signings this year.. :| But if we’re talking virtual events, then helping to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Morganville was amazingly fun! UPDATE: How stupid I am to have forgotten I attended Leigh Bardugo’s Strand event for Crooked Kingdom! So, obviously, that was my favorite author signing of 2016!!!

5. Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2016? When I wrote “Once Upon a Time: Zac Brewer” and this happened:

6. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year? A lot of Life Stuff happened and I was in a terrible blogging and reading slump for a good portion of the year. Like.. February-September. I’m slowly coming out of both slumps, but it’s been tough.

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)? My HarperTeen Summer 2016 Blog Tour post, at 699 views.

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love? My “The Many Ships of Reign” blog tour post. Because Reign!

9. Best bookish discover (book related sites, book stores, etc.)? Icey Designs on Etsy

10. Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year? Nope :( This is the first time since 2014 that I failed my Goodreads reading challenge, and by about 12 books – and that’s after I lowered my goal twice! Reading slumps suck!

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2016 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2017? *Laugh Cries* Too many to name!

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2017 (non-debut)? A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas!

3. 2017 Debut You Are Most Anticipating? Sea Witch by Sarah Henning!!!! GIMME!!!!!

4. Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2017? A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas!

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging Life In 2017? Just read and blog more. More original content – like my “Once Upon a Time” and “Television Tuesday” posts.

6. A 2017 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend To Everyone Absolutely Wintersong!

Television Tuesday: Why Reign’s cancellation has devastated me

Television Tuesday

Television Tuesday is a new feature in which I chat with you about all things television!

~*~*~*~

It was recently announced that season four of Reign would be its last. You can read about it via Variety and Deadline Hollywood.

Anyone who has followed me on here and on social media knows how obsessed I am with Reign. It’s an amazing, amazing show with an incredibly talented cast. Adelaide Kane SLAYS as Mary Queen of Scots

And Megan Follows is brilliant, though a bit scary, as Catherine de Medici

This show brought us Frary

And Matherine

It has given us ALL THE FEELS and gutted us time and time again – usually all in the same episode!

The cancellation announcement has truly gutted me, though. The loss of this show – of these characters – is nothing short of heartbreaking. I don’t say this to be a drama queen. I am honestly, truly devastated.

I started watching Reign during the second season, which aired from October 2014 to May 2015. It was on its mid-winter break and I wanted to binge it before it returned in January. I bought season one on DVD and used a combination of the CW website, iTunes and YouTube to watch the first half of season two. I fell in love right from the first episode, with my deep fangirl devotion hitting an all-time high during season two.

But it wasn’t until later on in 2015 when this show really began to mean the world to me. My family went through a really rough (understatement) period from October 2015-April 2016. And during that time, this show was my solace. My sanctuary. My escape from reality. I fell into this show to avoid thinking of all the loss and heartache occurring in my life. I watched and rewatched the show. I bought the books and DVDs. I even bought books outside of the Reign-verse, both fictional and non-fictional. This was my collection 39 weeks ago, as posted on Instagram (and it’s only grown since then):

I threw myself into the story of Mary Queen of Scots, in any and every way I could. I cheered when the characters triumphed, and cried when horrible things befell them – including death. The deaths of several characters, especially, devastated me beyond words. I felt as though I had lost loved ones – as I was losing loved ones in real life. When I rewatched the show, I cried again at all the same parts (and then some), even though I knew what was coming this time. I felt raw and broken after each death (one in particular), but I knew the show had to go on.

When Mary left French Court to return to Scotland, I felt conflicted. I mourned the loss of her life there and feared for her life in Scotland. But she had grown so much and had become such a strong, confident queen. I was eager to see what would come next – and still am, though that eagerness is tinged with the sadness of knowing the show is ending.

Reign has been suffering from poor ratings for awhile now. I was so relieved when it was renewed for season three, and then for season four. I knew the odds of a fifth season were slim to none, especially when the CW announced that season four would be a mid-winter show. But I still prayed for the best. And then the cancellation was announced. I still don’t think I’ve 100% accepted that this is truly happening – that this great show is coming to an end. It’s been my escape for so long now, I can’t imagine my life without it.

But the producers have promised fans an ending befitting a queen. They knew the end was near and began plotting how to best wrap things up. According to the Variety article:

“The fourth season is currently still in production, so the team behind “Reign” will be able to work on a series finale, knowing that it will be the final episode, giving fans a real conclusion to the story of Mary Queen of Scots. Insiders say that conversations about the show’s possible ending have been ongoing with producers, so the decision to make this season the last were not totally unexpected.”

I’m a little bit wary of what this will mean, though, as anyone who knows history knows that Mary Queen of Scots did NOT have a happy ending IRL. And photos circulating around Instagram are suggesting the show will mirror real life. I know it would be historically accurate but… I just really hope it doesn’t happen. This strong, fierce Queen does not deserve that kind of ending.

But since the show IS ending and there’s nothing that can be done about it (fans have been begging Netflix to pick the show up, but if the show ends in a historically accurate way, there won’t be any show left TO pick-up), all I can do is enjoy the time we have left and remind myself that I have the DVDs and can watch and re-watch to my hearts content. I have the based-on-the-show books and my Mary Queen of Scots book collection. And I have this fandom. Because this fandom is amazing. And I hope it lives on for a long time to come, despite the show ending. Because for as long as I have repeats and this fandom, this show will forever Reign over my heart (see what I did there??).

I want to thank the cast and crew for giving us four amazing seasons of this show. For bringing Mary Queen of Scots into our hearts. For giving us Frary and Matherine. For giving ME a show that allowed me to shut out reality and to push forward, day after day. You’ll likely never see this post, but you have done so much for me and I’m so, so grateful for it. I’ll miss you guys and I’ll miss this show. You’ll be gone, but never forgotten.

Without a backward glance, she closed her eyes and jumped into the midst of the blue-black pool, the sticky fluid sucking her body down to its depths like some kind of ravenous beast. As it devoured her, Sera’s mind emptied of all thought…and of all memory as she plummeted into the space where love would be nothing but weakness. She’d learned that the hard way. She stripped away all emotion, all empathy.

Seventeen year-old Britta Flannery is at ease only in the woods with her dagger and bow. She spends her days tracking criminals alongside her father, the legendary bounty hunter for the King of Malam—that is, until her father is murdered. Now outcast and alone and having no rights to her father’s land or inheritance, she seeks refuge where she feels most safe: the Ever Woods. When Britta is caught poaching by the royal guard, instead of facing the noose she is offered a deal: her freedom in exchange for her father’s killer.

However, it’s not so simple.

The alleged killer is none other than Cohen McKay, her father’s former apprentice. The only friend she’s ever known. The boy she once loved who broke her heart. She must go on a dangerous quest in a world of warring kingdoms, mad kings, and dark magic to find the real killer. But Britta wields more power than she knows. And soon she will learn what has always made her different will make her a daunting and dangerous force.

This book was a highly anticipated one for me. And I really enjoyed it… until I didn’t. The beginning was slow, but once it picked up, I really fell into the story. And then a little over half-way through the book, the plot and pace come to a screeching halt and it just dragged. AND THEN, 50 pages from the end, something happened and it just pushed me over the edge. It’s a tired trope that I’m sick of seeing in YA. I can’t explain what it is without spoilers, but if you’ve read the book, you’ll know what I’m talking about. And if you haven’t, you will once you DO (or if you do) read it.

There were a small number of intriguing plot twists, but other than that, there was nothing interesting about this book. I wasn’t a huge fan of the characters, either. And you guys know how character-centric I am, so that was probably the biggest reason I didn’t enjoy this book. I wasn’t feeling the love between the main characters at all. They felt more like just friends and the back and forth with them was ridiculous too. It was frustrating and unnecessary, and seemed like it was only meant to drag things out and add tension where there was none.

There were also a LOT of “duh” moments where something was SO OBVIOUS, it was impossibly to understand how the characters didn’t realize sooner – especially where Britta and her background and “destiny” are involved.

The feel and atmosphere of this book – the woods and the hunting, etc – kind of reminded me of the Grisha trilogy. Even the characters had similarities to the characters in the Grisha trilogy. But the Grisha trilogy is better, IMO. But I guess you MIGHT like this book if you liked the Grisha trilogy… Maybe?

I still gave this 3 stars because I did enjoy the first half of the book and the few plot twists that happened. The author’s writing is gorgeous, as well. But the plot and pacing were slow and drawn out and just not as enjoyable as I’d originally hoped.

Do I recommend this one? I honestly can’t say. I don’t want to turn anyone away from reading it, but this isn’t one I’d ever really suggest if someone asked me for book recommendations. If someone asked me how I enjoyed it, I’d have to be honest and say it wasn’t my cup of tea.

So.. short review was short. But that’s really all I have to say about this one. I was highly anticipating it and I feel very disappointed now. I’m not sure if I’ll read book two or not. It depends on the plot and if any trusted friends read and enjoy it.

A Court of Mist and Fury (ACOMAF) broke me. I am broken. I am liquified feels. I can’t breathe. I can’t think. My heart has been ripped out of my chest, shattered into a million pieces and stomped on. This book hangover I have will likely last until May 2, 2017 when A Court of Wings and Ruin comes out and I can gobble the story down within days. I thought A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) was amazing, but I was wrong – I mean, it was really good. But ACOMAF was BEYOND amazing. It was a higher level of amazing that ACOTAR could never ever come close to reaching. I don’t think ANY book can come close to the level of amazing that was ACOMAF. I’ve never been able to answer the question, “what’s your favorite book?” But after reading ACOMAF, I can. I can 100% say this book is my absolute favorite book ever.

Feyre was BRILLIANT in ACOMAF. And that’s saying a lot, because she was AMAZING in ACOTAR. But it wasn’t possible for her to reach her full potential as a human in the Spring Court. No, Feyre as an immortal Faerie in the Night Court was.. Destined. Fated. Meant to be. I was debating going back and reading ACOTAR again because I feel like I’d see it SO differently, but then I thought.. How could I get through it? I loved it and it’ll always be a favorite, but… Re-reading ACOTAR would mean having to see Feyre in the Spring Court again. It would mean seeing her human again, vulnerable and with Tamlin… *Vomits*

Okay, yeah, I loved Tamlin in ACOTAR. But that’s because he was basically all we knew, except for the few times Rhys showed up. But now that I’ve seen Feyre with Rhys, I know she was never meant to be with Tamlin. He was too possessive, too dominating. He held her back, refused to let her spread her wings and fly (see what I did there?). And his behavior in ACOMAF is unforgivable, especially his betrayal at the end. I wanted to KILL him. I wanted to smack him so hard, his head would spin. He was so possessive of Feyre, so sure she belonged to him, that he refused to believe she was better off without him. God forbid someone be happy away from him. It was a completely foreign concept to him. He never treated Feyre like an equal. He never even treated her like a person; rather, he treated her like a possession.

Feyre was so broken in the beginning, so lost and withering away.. At first, when Rhys brought her to the Night Court, I wasn’t sure how to feel. I loved his wickedness, but I was weary of him, of whether or not I should trust him. But as time passed, I shipped him and Feyre so hard, it can’t even be described in words. HE HELD HER HAIR BACK WHILE SHE VOMITED! TAMLIN DIDN’T EVEN WAKE UP – OR PRETENDED HE WASN’T AWAKE, AT LEAST. LIKE… THE FEARSOME HIGH LORD OF THE NIGHT COURT HELD FEYRE’S HAIR BACK WHILE SHE VOMITED FROM HER NIGHTMARES. He had my heart from that moment on.

Feyre and Rhys together were dynamite. The sexual tension, the heat, the lust and the intensity between them was unbelievable. How could I EVER have shipped her with Tamlin the baby jerk? They were partners, equals, mates (!!!!!), bonded so deeply, even the King of Hybern couldn’t break their bond. They were snarky and sarcastic with each other, but the love and attraction always thawed the bite of that snarkiness. Their banter was banter for the ages! Rhys treated Feyre like an equal, like her opinions and feelings matter. He trained her so she could protect herself. He gave her space when she needed it and stepped in when she didn’t realize she needed that contact and support. He helped heal her heart in subtle ways, and she didn’t even realize. Even letting her go with him on important court business… it’s more than Tamlin let her do. Tamlin coddled her, told her it was too dangerous. But Rhys let her decide on her own what she could and couldn’t handle. That alone made him the better man.

Also, can I just say how hard I laughed every time Feyre called Rhys an insufferable bastard. It was so fitting!

Feyre’s character development in this was so wonderful and perfect and it felt so right. She was so strong and so brave. I loved her training and exploring her powers and her full potential. I loved that Rhys let her do that, let her grow and do what she needed to do to heal. I can say with absolute certainty that Rhys and Feyre are my absolute favorite Book Ship ever. They are my Bookish OTP. They are relationship goals. And Rhys making Feyre High Lady of the Night Court? icing on the cake.

Mor, Cassian, Azriel and Amren were squad goals. They were amazing. I loved the friendship between Mor and Feyre. I loved that, despite Rhy being her High Lord, Mor was still her own person, who didn’t bow down to his intimidation (unlike that lap dog Lucien, but we’ll get to that soon). When Feyre needed space and needed to get away, Mor helped her, without hesitation. YA needs more epic female friendships, with women supporting women. Cassian was another favorite of mine. He was so fierece and loyal to Rhys. And he protected Feyre when it was necessary, and without hesitation. He was also hilarious and snarky. I loved the direction he and Nesta were going in… Interested to see what her forced transformation will mean for them.

Azriel scared me a bit, but his steadfast loyalty was incredible. I was so terrified for him near the end.. for Cassian, as well. I didn’t trust Azriel at all in the beginning and I’m not totally sure why. Maybe because I wasn’t yet sure if anyone from the Night Court could be trusted. And if Azriel scared me a bit, Amren completely terrified me. But I was fascinated by her and her story. I can’t wait to learn more about her and her past.

Finally, Lucien… Dude, what a pathetic welp. I used to like Lucien. But he was just a condescending prick in ACOMAF. He was Tamlin’s lap dog and he barely fought for Feyre, even when he saw what Tamlin’s iron fist was doing to her. He makes me sick, honestly. But it’s terrifying that, at the end, he could see right through Feyre’s tricks and lies. I wonder what that will mean for book three… But also, his love for Elain… The fact that they ended up being mates… ??!?!?!??! I don’t even know what to think!

Sarah J. Maas did some incredible things with this book. I think this sums it up pretty well:

img_2449

All of these are 100% true and 100% important. But think about it – “The first guy a girl meets is not her soulmate.” This was not a love triangle. In ACOTAR, it seemed as though there would be a love triangle between Feyre, Tamlin and Lucien… Then maybe a love triangle with Feyre, Tamlin and Rhys. But Sarah J. Maas debunked all of that when she turned Feyre so permanently away from Tamlin – and for epic, sound reasons. How many authors have ever done that? I can’t think of any off the top of my head. And the realistic depiction of anxiety, depression and PTSD? Not to mention the fact that she depicted a male recovering from sexual assault…? Like, HOW AMAZING IS SARAH J. MAAS FOR DOING THINGS RARELY DONE? Seriously, though!

AND THAT ENDING OMFG I CAN’T WITH THAT ENDING, I AM BROKEN AND I DON’T KNOW HOW TO PROCESS WHAT HAPPENED AND WTF?!?!?!?!? No, seriously, I can’t even begin to TRY to process what happened. That ending has left me so conflicted and broken and damn excited for the third book, to see Feyre take Tamlin down from within his own court. It’s going to suck, though, because it means Rhys and Feyre will be separated and who knows for how long? But I’m guessing, in true Sarah J. Maas fashion, their reunion will be filled with passion, lust and fireworks.

Wow… This turned into an epic essay, instead of a review. But I can’t even begin to tell you guys how much I loved this book. It was just such utter perfection, I can’t even begin to wrap my head around the level of perfection. I wasn’t kidding when I said this book hangover will likely last until the third book comes out! It was so amazing, so perfect, so RIGHT. I enjoyed this book 1000x more than book one. I’m anxious to see what the consequences of the ending will be. I need book three now, but I’m also terrified of it and what it will bring.

Overall, if you couldn’t tell from my super fangirly essay review, I loved A Court of Mist and Fury beyond words!! ALL THE STARS! ALL THE HEARTS!! ALL THE FEELS!!! SO BROKEN!!!! Seriously, if this isn’t on your TBR, it NEEDS TO BE! If I could give this book ten million billion x infinity stars, I would! I know I’ve said it, but I CANNOT wait for book three – which actually has a title now: A Court of Wings and Ruin, ACOWAR for short! That alone – the fact that it has the word WAR in its abbreviation – should be proof in itself that all hell is about to break lose!

five-stars
