2019 End of Year Book Survey

When I did my 2018 End of Year Book Survey, I had this whole explanation for why 2018 sucked and I knew why it sucked but I didn’t want to discuss it because I was letting everyone down and felt horrible about it, etc. I still feel all those things, so I’m not going to repeat them – you can just go read that introduction here, if you want to. Not only do I not want to be repetitive with this intro, but it’s already 2020 here in NY, so I just don’t want to bring that vibe/energy into this post. With this post, I simply want to recap my 2019 blogging and reading year, and then move on, forget about it (and all of 2019, for that matter), and go forward with 2020.

This survey is hosted by the lovely Jamie @ The Perpetual Page Turner. All questions and images belong to her! Thanks, Jamie!!

So yeah, here we go! Enjoy!

**2019 READING STATS**

Number Of Books You Read: 31
Number of Re-Reads: 1
Genre You Read The Most From: My usual science fiction/fantasy, thriller, retellings, etc.

1. Best Book You Read In 2019? These Witches Don’t Burn by Isabel Sterling. I’m SUPER HYPED for the sequel, coming out in June.

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t? Tarot by Marissa Kennerson

3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read? Again, but Better by Christine Riccio. I haven’t formally reviewed it (I meant to, but 2019 was meh and I forgot), but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, and really related to it.

4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)? As a bookseller, I pushed too many books to count, haha

5. Best series you started in 2019? These Witches Don’t Burn by Isabel Sterling

Best Sequel of 2019? A Dream So Dark by L.L. McKinney. LOVED LOVED LOVED. CANNOT WAIT FOR BOOK THREE!!! I haven’t reviewed it yet (man, I suck. I REALLY need to catch up on reviews…), BUT I did participate in the blog tour and shared my favorite quotes from the book. You can check that out here!

Best Series Ender of 2019? Song of the Dead by Sarah Glenn Marsh. This duology was INCREDIBLE and I highly recommend it!

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2019? Isabel Sterling and Sandhya Menon tie on this one

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone? Lost Roses (Lilac Girls #2) by Martha Hall Kelly. This was a Barnes & Noble Book Club pick, and I host the event at my store. This was, by far, my favorite book club book of 2019.

8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year? A Dream So Dark by L.L. McKinney (which I WILL review this month!)!!!!

9. Book You Read In 2019 That You Would Be MOST Likely To Re-Read Next Year? Probably none, but you never know. I might re-read a few of the ones that have sequels coming out in 2020 to refresh my memory.

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2019?

11. Most memorable character of 2019? All of the characters from Song of the Dead by Sarah Glenn Marsh. I miss them and this world so much. I need more books!!!

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2019? A Dream So Dark by L.L. McKinney. Her descriptions of Wonderland are so vivid and breath-taking, it just completely sucks you in to the story.

13. Most Thought-Provoking/Life-Changing Book of 2019? I actually read several that were thought-provoking, but Parkland Speaks gave me the most chills.

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2019 to finally read? When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon. I didn’t read a ton of backlist in 2019, but this was still an easy question. Sandhya’s books are so damn adorable and fun. Highly recommend!

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2019? “Begin at the beginning.” (from A Dream So Dark by L.L. McKinney)

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2019? Shortest was Parkland Speaks and longest was Serpent & Dove

17. Book That Shocked You The Most Err… I have.. no idea. Let me get back to you on this one.

18. OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!): I mean, honestly, I shipped a lot of couples in a lot of the books I read. But none really stand-out as being my OTP, sadly. But there was definitely LOTS of shipping.

19. Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year I… Have no idea. Ugh. Sorry, guys. I’m just drawing a blank right now. I’ll update this if I think of one.

20. Favorite Book You Read in 2019 From An Author You’ve Read Previously Song of the Dead by Sarah Glenn Marsh

21. Best Book You Read In 2019 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure/Bookstagram, Etc.: I mean.. I was in such a reading slump, I really just read within my comfort zone and based on my TBR and review pile, so… I didn’t really read anything based solely on a recommendation this time.

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2019? None… Kind of like with the question about my OTP, I definitely had some book boyfriend crushes, but none really stand out as being my favorite or being new. I have a few from the books that were sequels I read, but no one new.

23. Best 2019 debut you read? These Witches Don’t Burn by Isabel Sterling

24. Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year? A Dream So Dark by L.L. McKinney

25. Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read? When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon and the sequel, There’s Something About Sweetie

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2019? Parkland Speaks

27. Hidden Gem Of The Year? The Okay Witch by Emma Steinkellner, a middle grade graphic novel that’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch meets Roller Girl, and so so so GOOD!

28. Book That Crushed Your Soul? The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. It was just so depressing…

29. Most Unique Book You Read In 2019? Scythe by Neal Shusterman. The plot was super unique and thought-provoking. I’ll be reviewing this soon, as well – I’m SO behind on reviews, sigh.

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)? There were a few, honestly.. Not gonna name them all for various reasons, but yeah.

1. New favorite book blog/Bookstagram/Youtube channel you discovered in 2019? Ehhh….. I don’t think I have any. Only because I was, once again, really disconnected from blogging and reading in 2019, so I didn’t do a lot of exploring. This is something I want to do more of this year, though.

2. Favorite post you wrote in 2019? I didn’t do a lot of unique posts this year, so I guess just my Blogoversary post, since I’m still shocked that I celebrated 6 years of blogging. I never imagined I’d still be blogging after 6 (now almost 7) years!

3. Favorite bookish related photo you took in 2019:? I didn’t take many.

4. Best bookish event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, etc.)? BEA. Always fun getting to see/meet everyone!

5. Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2019? I don’t think I really had one. Like I said, I just was very disconnected from blogging in 2019. Hoping to change that in 2020.

6. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year? Everything. My reading and blogging slump (which I’ve now dubbed my Life Slump) have haunted me since February 2016 and it’s been a struggle to get through the little bit of reading and blogging I HAVE managed to get done. My mental health took a huge punch in 2019, too. But I’m REALLY hoping to fix that this year.

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)? I honestly don’t think I have any really popular posts.. I did a lot of spotlight posts and reviews, so… Also, it’s 2:30am and I have to work tomorrow morning, so I’m just too lazy to look the stats up, haha.

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love? None. Again, really didn’t have a lot of unique posts, so there isn’t a single one that got too much or too little love. Hoping to do more discussion posts, etc, this year to make up for this. I have some fun features I want to start, and others I want to get back into doing (like Television Tuesday, On Meredith’s Mind, Once Upon a Time, etc).

9. Best bookish discover (book related sites, book stores, etc.)? None :(

10. Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year? Just Goodreads.

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2019 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2020? *Laugh cries*

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2020 (non-debut)? House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City #1) by Sarah J. Maas!!!!

3. 2020 Debut You Are Most Anticipating? Witches of Ash and Ruin by E. Latimer!!!

4. Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2020? Hmm…. TBH, I’m not sure. I’ll update this once I think of one.

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging Life In 2020? EVERYTHING. I want to get back into blogging. I want to get back into reading. I want this Life Slump to end and I want 2020 to be the best year ever.

6. A 2020 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend To Everyone (if applicable): Haven’t read any yet :(

~*~*~

So there you have it! Hope you guys enjoyed the survey, despite how sad and pathetic my answers were *sobs.* Feel free to leave a comment with a link to your best of 2019 survey so I can check it out, or just answer a few of the questions in the comments!

Happy New Year, and may 2020 be better than 2019!!

2018 End of Year Book Survey

Another year has come and gone, and I’m no closer to getting out of this reading/blogging/life slump I’ve been in since, like, 2015. TBH, it’s getting really old and and I’m really.. tired. And frustrated. I know why I’m in this slump (reasons I’m not ready to share), but I just can’t shake it. However, I will say that I’ve been taking certain personal steps to try to get better and I’m REALLY hoping 2019 will be my year to shine. Because, guys… I have SO many fun post ideas and SO MANY THINGS I want to share with you. And all the features I’ve started and neglected over the years? Yeah, I miss doing them.

I also hate feeling like I’ve let everyone – friends, fellow bloggers, authors, publicists, etc – down. I know blogging is a hobby and I don’t owe anyone anything, but this blog is my baby and I’m tired of missing deadlines and not finishing books and not getting things done and just… Blah. That’s all. Just.. Blah.

So anyway.. I thought 2017 was my worst reading year but this year was actually worse than 2017. I read less and struggled more. So I don’t even know how interesting my survey will be because I don’t have many books to share with you, but the ones I DID love, I loved with all my heart and I definitely want to use this survey to push those on you guys!

This survey is hosted by the lovely Jamie @ The Perpetual Page Turner. All questions and images belong to her! Thanks, Jamie!!

So yeah, we’ll see how this goes! Enjoy!

**2018 READING STATS**

Number Of Books You Read: 30 … Which is sad and pathetic :( (I mean this for me and my personal goals. If this was your goal and you’re excited, I mean no offense! It’s just disappointing for me, considering I used to read double that or more…)
Number of Re-Reads: 3
Genre You Read The Most From: My usual science fiction/fantasy, thriller, retellings, etc.

1. Best Book You Read In 2018? There were 3 I truly loved, and since I didn’t read many I truly loved in 2018 because of my reading slump, I’ll list all 3 (in no particular order):

Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh
A Blade So Black by L.L. McKinney
Renegades by Marissa Meyer

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t? There were three:

Royals by Rachel Hawkins: I LOVE Rachel’s books and I LOVE royalty stories. But this just.. didn’t do it for me, unfortunately.

My Plain Jane by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand and Jodi Meadows: With how much I LOVED My Lady Jane, I expected more from this. I struggled just to finish it :(

Shadowsong by S. Jae-Jones: This book let me down so much, I can’t even talk about it. You guys know how much I LOVED Wintersong. So just.. yeah. I can’t even talk about this book. It doesn’t exist, tbh.

3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read? A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer. I don’t remember why, but I was hesitant to read this book when I first heard about it. And then I ended up LOVING IT so much! My review will be up in January, so stay tuned!

4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)? As a bookseller, I push a LOT of books on people nowadays – even more so than when I was just a blogger. But I probably pushed Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi more than anything. IT’S SO GOOD, GUYS! PERCY JACKSON MEETS SAILOR MOON!!!!!!! I CANNOT wait for the sequel!

5. Best series you started in 2018? Best Sequel of 2018? Best Series Ender of 2018? Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh and Renegades by Marissa Meyer tie for best series I started in 2018. Archenemies by Marissa Meyer was definitely the best sequel of 2018. And the best series ender, hands down, would have to be A Sorrow Fierce and Falling by Jessica Cluess.

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2018? L.L. McKinney and Sarah Glenn Marsh are going to tie on this one!

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone? I read out of my comfort zone a LOT this year because I host the Barnes & Noble Book Club for my store. My answer isn’t TOTALLY out of my comfort zone because it’s still sci-fi/fantasy, which I do read a lot of. But it was adult, not teen, so it still counts (right?). And that answer is An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green. It was the third B&N Book Club book and I REALLY loved it!! I didn’t review it on my blog (I don’t review books I read for work, except in special circumstances), but I would give it 4.5 stars, if I did!

8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year? Definitely A Blade So Black by L.L. McKinney! I’m already super pumped for the sequel (THE COVER IS FIERCE!!!!), PLUS it was optioned for television!!!!!!!

9. Book You Read In 2018 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year? I might re-read Reign of the Fallen before I read book two, and maybe A Blade So Black right before that sequel releases next September. But otherwise, I plan to do some re-reading of series books I need to catch up on or finally finish (Like Throne of Glass, Six of Crows, etc).

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2018?

11. Most memorable character of 2018? Nova from Renegades and Archenemies (Marissa Meyer). She’s definitely one of my favorite book villains of all time!

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2018? The Glass Butterfly by A.G. Howard. Anita is a master storyteller. She creates these incredible worlds and her writing just sucks you in.

13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2018? #Murdertrending by Gretchen McNeil. With what’s happening in our world right now, the plot of this book felt chillingly possible – like it could actually happen. It was a bit creepy to read because of that, tbh.

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2018 to finally read? Renegades by Marissa Meyer. It was one of my absolute favorite books of the year, and definitely my favorite of her books. I’m KICKING myself for waiting so long to read it!

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2018? I’ve been really bad about keeping treack of quotes, so I don’t have one, unfortunately..:(

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2018? Longest was Archenemies by Marissa Meyer, shortest was Reach Higher: An Inspiring Photo Celebration of First Lady Michelle Obama by Amanda Lucidon

17. Book That Shocked You The Most I… have no idea.

18. OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!) Henrietta and Magnus from the Kingdom on Fire trilogy!

19. Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year Errr….. I don’t know if I have one… Or I do and just can’t remember it.. Which is pathetic, but I’ll blame it on my slump.

20. Favorite Book You Read in 2018 From An Author You’ve Read Previously Definitely Renegades by Marissa Meyer… Which, for those who know me and know how much I LOVE fairy tale retellings, you know that’s saying a LOT because I really loved The Lunar Chronicles. But the Renegades series is just absolute gold.

21. Best Book You Read In 2018 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure: Again, I was in such a reading slump, I really just read within my comfort zone and based on my TBR and review pile, so… :(

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2018? Probably Magnus from the Kingdom on Fire trilogy!

23. Best 2018 debut you read? Another tie with A Blade So Black by L.L. McKinney and Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh

24. Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year? A tie between A Blade So Black by L.L. McKinney and Renegades by Marissa Meyer

25. Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read? There were a couple that all had their moments. But I read so little and struggled so much, I couldn’t say which ones. Most likely the same ones that keep coming up as my answers for the other questions.

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2018? See answer to question above… There were a couple that all had their moments. But I read so little and struggled so much, I couldn’t say which ones. Most likely the same ones that keep coming up as my answers for the other questions.

27. Hidden Gem Of The Year? I mean, any book I ended up loving was a hidden gem for me, bahahaha. But seriously, I mean that. I struggled so much that any book I loved was a gem, in my opinion.

28. Book That Crushed Your Soul? I’m going to have to go with City of Bastards by Andrew Shvarts because it was super intense and super insane and OMG THAT ENDING and I NEED BOOK THREE ASAP!!! (So this one was a GOOD kind of soul crushing, haha).

29. Most Unique Book You Read In 2018? Eh… I honestly don’t know. A few had unique plots, but nothing that stands out to answer this with.

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)? Shadowsong. I LOVED Wintersong so much, and HATED Shadowsong so much.. And that made me SO mad. And disappointed, tbh.

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2018? Howling Libraries

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2018? I… don’t have a favorite :( I actually feel like I need to e-evaluate my reviewing style because lately, I worry my reviews are all repetitive babble. Maybe I’m just being hard on myself because of my slump, though, idk… We’ll see how it goes in 2019, I guess!

3. Best discussion/non-review post you had on your blog? Television Tuesday: The Parallels of Emily Gilmore and Catherine de Medici

4. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)? Didn’t participate in any :(

5. Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2018? In addition to my reading slump, I was also in a blogging slump so I don’t think I had any… :(

6. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year? My reading and blogging slump. They’ve haunted me since February 2016 and it’s been a struggle to get through the little bit of reading and blogging I HAVE managed to get done.

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)? Blog Tour: Bright We Burn by Kiersten White (Excerpt)

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love? Television Tuesday: The Parallels of Emily Gilmore and Catherine de Medici

9. Best bookish discovery (book related sites, book stores, etc.)? None… :( (Blame the slump).

10. Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year? I beat my Goodreads Challenge, but only because I aimed low. I set my goal at 12 books (1 a month) and read 30.

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2018 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2019? HAHAHAHA…. With a reading slump that’s going on for almost three years now? Too many to list..

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2019 (non-debut)? Slayer by Kiersten White

3. 2019 Debut You Are Most Anticipating? Never-Contented Things by Sarah Porter

4. Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2019? Capturing the Devil (Stalking Jack the Ripper #4) by Kerri Maniscalco (despite the fact that I haven’t gotten to Escaping from Houdini yet.. Eek! Stupid, stupid reading slump!!!)

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging Life In 2019? I REALLY MORE THAN ANYTHING want to get out of this blogging and reading slump. I’m so frustrated by them, I just want to cry. I miss reading and I have SO many blog discussion post ideas and blog features I want to share with you guys..

6. A 2019 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend To Everyone (if applicable): Haven’t read enough to recommend any :(

~*~*~

So there you have it! Hope you guys enjoyed the survey, despite how sad and pathetic my answers were *sobs.* Don’t forget to head over to the Perpetual Page Turner to see the linky list of all the other blogs who participated. And of course, feel free to leave a comment with a link to your best of 2018 survey so I can check it out, or just answer a few of the questions in the comments!

Happy New Year, and may 2019 be better than 2018!!

2017 End of Year Book Survey

2017 was a pretty crap year – for the country as a whole, and for me in personal ways. A few great things happened for me personally, but it was mostly just a crap year full of stress, heartbreak and change, so I’m really glad it’s over. I’m still trying to stay hopeful than 2018 will be better, but I’ve been saying that for years now, so….

Anyway, my reading slump that started in 2016 hasn’t ended yet, so this was a terrible reading year for me – my worst since I started blogging in 2013. I’m a bit scared to fill this out because of that – and I honestly almost just skipped doing this altogether – but we’ll see how it goes! Maybe posting this will help me get back into the blogging spirit? One can only hope!

This survey is hosted by the lovely Jamie @ The Perpetual Page Turner. All questions and images belong to her! Thanks, Jamie!!

So, here we go!

Please note: I’m not going to count Harry Potter in the “best book you read” questions because of course HP is the best, that goes without saying. I’ll only count it in questions about number of books read, re-read counts, etc.

Number Of Books You Read: 32 … Which is sad and pathetic :( (I mean this for me and my personal goals. If this was your goal and you’re excited, I mean no offense! It’s just disappointing to me to fail my Goodreads challenge two years in a row…)
Number of Re-Reads: 8
Genre You Read The Most From: My usual science fiction/fantasy, thriller, retellings, etc.

1. Best Book You Read In 2017? There were 4 I truly loved, and since I didn’t read many I truly loved in 2017 because of my reading slump, I’ll list all 4 (in no particular order):

How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather
Haunting the Deep by Adriana Mather
Freya (Freya #1) by Matthew Laurence
The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t? There were four:

The Crown’s Fate by Evelyn Skye. Biggest disappointment of 2017, since I LOVED LOVED LOVED The Crown’s Game. You can read my review to find out why I didn’t enjoy it :(

Caraval by Stephanie Garber. I don’t know if it was my reading slump or me, but I wanted to love it and didn’t.

Blood of Wonderland by Colleen Oakes. Queen of Hearts was one of my absolute favorite books of 2016, and this book was so weighed down by Second Book Syndrome that it was just a huge letdown. Still torn on whether I’ll be reading the third book or not…

One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake. Three Dark Crowns got me out of a reading slump, and I actually re-read it before reading One Dark Throne. I was so excited and then.. wow. Another one that had Second Book Syndrome, which was REALLY disappointing since this was supposed to be the conclusion to the duology and now it’s going to be a four book saga. I can get it being a trilogy, but I don’t feel it needs to be four books and I’m still uncertain if I’ll continue with the series or not.

3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read? Okay, I know I said I wasn’t going to include Harry Potter books in these kinds of questions… But I have to answer this one with Prisoner of Azkaban because honestly, the last re-read I did (from Dec 2016-Jan 2017) made me realize that PoA is actually my favorite HP book, which shocked the crap out of me because I always thought it was my least favorite (and had felt that way for 18 years, so it came as quite a shock). And this most recent re-read I did (like a week ago) confirmed for me that it is, indeed, my favorite book in the series. My mind is still blown by this revelation.

4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)? I always push Leigh Bardugo books and Sarah J. Maas books a lot, so of course those. Also, How to Hang a Witch and Haunting the Deep by Adriana Mather because they were epic beyond words.

5. Best series you started in 2017? Best Sequel of 2017? Best Series Ender of 2017? For best series started, I’m going to have to go with Freya by Matthew Laurence – loved so much! Best sequel of 2017 would have to be Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco. And best series ender… I can’t answer that, because I didn’t read many series enders in 2017 – and the ones I read weren’t so great :(

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2017? Adriana Mather, definitely. I can’t wait to see what she does next!

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone? I didn’t really read out of my comfort zone this year because I was in such a bad reading slump, I was trying to read what WAS in my comfort zone, hoping those books would break me out of my reading slump. Sadly, this didn’t work. So maybe I DO need to read out of my comfort zone some more in 2018…

8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year? Another for How to Hang a Witch and Haunting the Deep by Adriana Mather. Definitely some of my favorite books of 2017.

9. Book You Read In 2017 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year? I don’t really see myself doing any re-reads, unless it’s Harry Potter.

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2017?

11. Most memorable character of 2017? Freya. She was hilarious and spunky.

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2017? The Hummingbird Heart by A.G. Howard. Anita is a master storyteller. She creates these incredible worlds and her writing just sucks you in.

13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2017? The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2017 to finally read? I read mostly new releases, so I don’t have any backlist to answer this question with :(

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2017? I don’t think I have one.. :(

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2017? Longest was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, shortest was Katana at Super Hero High by Lisa Yee

17. Book That Shocked You The Most I… have no idea. I guess One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake because I’m shocked the series is getting 2 more books and I’m sad that ODT had Second Book Syndrome as a result.

18. OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!) Audrey Rose and Thomas from Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco!!!

19. Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year Mina and Lynet in Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust.

20. Favorite Book You Read in 2017 From An Author You’ve Read Previously Definitely The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

21. Best Book You Read In 2017 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure: Again, I was in such a reading slump, I really just read within my comfort zone and based on my TBR and review pile, so… :(

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2017? I don’t think I have one..

23. Best 2017 debut you read? Another one for Freya by Matthew Laurence

24. Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year? I know I said I wasn’t going to use Harry Potter for these but.. I’m gonna have to go with Harry Potter #sorrynotsorry

25. Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read? Harry Potter, of course.

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2017? None.. :\

27. Hidden Gem Of The Year? Another one for Another for How to Hang a Witch and Haunting the Deep by Adriana Mather. These really were incredible and everyone needs to read them!

28. Book That Crushed Your Soul? …. Don’t have one :( Stupid reading slump…

29. Most Unique Book You Read In 2017? I mean… I guess Harry Potter: The Cursed Child. But only because it’s a screenplay and I don’t usually read those. Also, it sucked. So I guess that also made it unique because I LOVE everything HP.. except for this atrocity.

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)? See above. And I 100% didn’t like it, for the record.

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2017? I was very disconnected from the blogging community this year because I had a lot going on in my personal life, so I didn’t discover any new blogs, sadly.

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2017? Don’t have a favorite :(

3. Best discussion/non-review post you had on your blog? Television Tuesday: Breaking Up (Or Not) With a Television Show

4. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)? Didn’t participate in any :(

5. Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2017? In addition to my reading slump, I was also in a blogging slump so I don’t think I had any… :(

6. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year? My reading and blogging slump. They’ve haunted me since February 2016 and it’s been a struggle to get through the little bit of reading and blogging I HAVE managed to get done.

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)? 2017 Debut Authors Bash: Sea Witch by Sarah Henning

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love? On Meredith’s Mind #7: Happy 20th Birthday, Harry Potter!!!!!!!

9. Best bookish discover (book related sites, book stores, etc.)? Spearcraft Book Box Subscription

10. Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year? Nope. I failed so hard on my Goodreads challenge, it’s not even funny. Second year in a row I haven’t reached my goal, too. For 2018, I’m lowering my goal substantially because it’s very disappointing to not reach it two years in a row.

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2017 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2018? HAHAHAHA…. With a reading slump that’s going on for almost two years now? Too many to list..

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2018 (non-debut)? Escaping from Houdini (Stalking Jack the Ripper, #3) by Kerri Maniscalco

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging Life In 2018? I REALLY MORE THAN ANYTHING want to get out of this blogging and reading slump. I’m so frustrated by them, I just want to cry. I miss reading and I have SO many blog discussion post ideas and blog features I want to share with you guys..

6. A 2018 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend To Everyone (if applicable): Haven’t read any :(

Happy New Year, and may 2018 be better than 2017!!

2016 End of Year Book Survey

Wow, 2016 seriously FLEW by. It was a really stressful, heartbreaking year and I’m really glad it’s coming to an end. I know the beginning of 2017 is going to be pretty bumpy, too, but I’m still hopeful it’ll be better than 2016 was!

This survey is hosted by the lovely Jamie @ The Perpetual Page Turner. All questions and images belong to her! Thanks, Jamie!!

So, here we go!

Number Of Books You Read: 57 (This is the least number of books I’ve read in a year in a LONG time.. Stupid reading slump! Sigh)
Number of Re-Reads: 8.5 (I’m in the middle of a re-read right now but won’t finish before midnight)
Genre You Read The Most From: Sci-Fi/Fantasy, retellings, etc. My usual :)

1. Best Book You Read In 2016? I have two. They are a 100% tie. First was A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas. THIS BOOK WAS UTTER PERFECTION AND IT BROKE ME. The second is actually a 2017 release, and that is Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones. THIS BOOK IS INTOXICATING AND BEAUTIFUL AND IT HAS LEFT ME BREATHLESS!

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t? Heartless by Marissa Meyer. I’m still sad panda that I didn’t enjoy it more.

3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read? Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige. I really hated Dorothy Must Die, so I was shocked I enjoyed Stealing Snow so much!

4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)? A Court of Mist and Fury and Wintersong! Even though I read them at the end of the year, I pushed them a LOT once I read them!

5. Best series you started in 2016? Best Sequel of 2016? Best Series Ender of 2016? Best series I started was The Conquerors Saga from Kiersten White, with book one being And I Darken. We have so few historical fiction novels in YA that are PURE historical fiction – it was refreshing!.

Best sequel of 2016 is A Court of Mist and Fury!!!!!

Best series ender was The Lost Codex by Heather Lyons. SO EPIC AND SO MANY FEELS!

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2016? Oh, I can’t name just one! I discovered several: Marieke Nijkamp, Evelyn Skye, Gena Showalter, Roshani Chokshi, Kendare Blake, CJ Redwine and Jessica Cluess.

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone? Honestly, I didn’t really read anything out of my comfort zone this year, thanks to a reading slump that effected my reading for months.

8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year? This should be obvious by now.. A Court of Mist and Fury!!!

9. Book You Read In 2016 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year? *Points at question 8*

13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2016? This Is Where It Ends by Marieke Nijkamp. I’m still not over this one.

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2016 to finally read? I didn’t read a lot of back-list, so I can’t answer this. Though I’m sorry I waited so long to read A Court of Mist and Fury! But that was only by a few months.

“Was that a horse joke?”

23. Best 2016 debut you read? A Shadow Bright and Burning!

25. Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read? A Court of Mist and Fury!

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2016? A Court of Mist and Fury!

27. Hidden Gem Of The Year? Queen of Hearts by Colleen Oakes. I think it got lost because Heartless came out this year. But Queen of Hearts was WAY better.

28. Book That Crushed Your Soul? A Court of Mist and Fury

29. Most Unique Book You Read In 2016? Hmm.. Probably And I Darken, since – again – it’s a very rare, PURE historical fiction novel. And YA needs more of those.

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad? Harmony House. The rage is real. I’m still raging over this one.

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2016? I was sadly disconnected from the blogging world this year, so I didn’t discover any new ones.

3. Best discussion/non-review post you had on your blog? My “The Many Ships of Reign” blog tour post. Because Reign!

4. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)? I didn’t actually attend any interesting events or signings this year.. :| But if we’re talking virtual events, then helping to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Morganville was amazingly fun! UPDATE: How stupid I am to have forgotten I attended Leigh Bardugo’s Strand event for Crooked Kingdom! So, obviously, that was my favorite author signing of 2016!!!

5. Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2016? When I wrote “Once Upon a Time: Zac Brewer” and this happened:

6. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year? A lot of Life Stuff happened and I was in a terrible blogging and reading slump for a good portion of the year. Like.. February-September. I’m slowly coming out of both slumps, but it’s been tough.

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love? My “The Many Ships of Reign” blog tour post. Because Reign!

9. Best bookish discover (book related sites, book stores, etc.)? Icey Designs on Etsy

10. Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year? Nope :( This is the first time since 2014 that I failed my Goodreads reading challenge, and by about 12 books – and that’s after I lowered my goal twice! Reading slumps suck!

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2016 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2017? *Laugh Cries* Too many to name!

2015 End of Year Book Survey

2015-end-of-year-book-survey

Wow, 2015 seriously FLEW by. It was a really stressful year and I’m actually glad it’s coming to an end. I know the beginning of 2016 is going to be pretty bumpy, too, but I’m still hopeful it’ll be better than 2015 was!

Anyway! I did the 2013 End of Year Book Survey, but missed the 2014 survey (the last few months of 2014 were just as stressful as 2015, if not more so!), so I’m really excited to be participating this year! Even though 2015 was rough on my personal life, I still read some amazing books and experienced some epic bookish things!

I won’t list them all, but I’m definitely a Sad Panda over that :(

3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read? Surprising in a Bad Way: Ice Like Fire by Sara Raasch. I really enjoyed Snow Like Ashes, but then I DNF’d Ice Like Fire. It was.. I was really disappointed :( Surprising in a Good Way: Becoming Jinn by Lori Goldstein. 8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year? Definitely Hotel Ruby by Suzanne Young. I couldn’t put it down! Seriously loved!

9. Book You Read In 2015 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year? I don’t do much re-reading, but I’d say Ten Thousand Skies Above You by Claudia Gray, so it’s fresh in my mind when I read the third and final book in the trilogy!

TTSAY

11. Most memorable character of 2015? Alina from the Grisha trilogy and Inej from Six of Crows!

19. Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year This is a little twisted, but the friendship between Samantha and Caroline in Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone. If you’ve read it, you know why it’s a bit twisted!

20. Favorite Book You Read in 2015 From An Author You’ve Read Previously Every single book I read by Heather Lyons. She’s amazing!

21. Best Book You Read In 2015 that You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. But I actually didn’t really enjoy it :(

28. Book That Crushed Your Soul? Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo!

29. Most Unique Book You Read In 2015? The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich! It was written in a non-linear way, with journal entries, transcribed video footage, diary entries and interviews. Plus, it had a twisty, epic ending! Also, the OMG! Shakespeare books – because Shakespeare told in emojis, text messages, Facebook status updates, etc? Epic!

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)? Ensnared by A.G. Howard. I LOVED Splintered and Unhinged. But Ensnared really fell flat and that made me angry because it’s such a great series and it could have been amazing!

3 Bookish Life

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2015? Definitely Brittany’s Book Rambles!

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2015? My review for The Forgotten Mountain by Heather Lyons and my review for Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas. Both are my GIFiest reviews ever!

2013 End of Year Book Survey

best-books-2013-1024x862

I don’t know how this year went by so fast, but 2013 is almost over. I can’t believe it! To end the year, I’ve decided to participate in the awesome 2013 End of Year Book Survey, hosted by Jamie @ The Perpetual Page Turner. All questions and images belong to her! Thanks, Jamie!!

So, here we go!

1 best-teen-books-2013-1024x255

1. Best book you read in 2013? (If you have to cheat, you can break it down by genre)
It’s almost impossible to narrow that list down. But I’m going to say Splintered by A.G. Howard, Spellcaster by Claudia Gray, Shadowlands by Kate Brian, Crash Into You by Katie McGarry, A Matter of Truth by Heather Lyons and The Promise of Amazing by Robin Constantine. I can’t pick just one, but those are my Top Five!

2. Book you were excited about and thought you were going to love, but didn’t?
Frozen by Melissa de la Cruz. I’ve loved all her books and it had such a great concept. But the writing and characters fell flat.

3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2013?
All of Katie McGarry’s books, but especially Crash Into You. Before I started blogging, I never really liked contemporary and now I love it. And these books were amazing and made me cry!

4. Book you read in 2013 that you recommended to people most in 2013?
Probably Unhinged by A.G. Howard. It was soooo amazing!

5. Best series you discovered in 2013?
Shadowlands by Kate Brian. The first book came out in January 2013 and the second book just released in October. The ending of Shadowlands was… Holy crap! I still need to read book two, but I’m so excited for it!

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2013?
Uhh… I discovered a LOT of new authors in 2013, thanks to blogging! I absolutely can’t pick one! A.G Howard, Heather Lyons, Rachel Harris, Amalie Howard, Katie McGarry, Beth Albright, Vivi Barnes, Robin Constantine, Jamie Grey, Romily Bernard – All of them are such amazing people! I love them all!!

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?
Rachel Harris’ Taste the Heat. It’s contemporary adult romance – something I NEVER read before Taste the Heat. I won it on Twitter and absolutely loved it! Now I read everything Rachel Harris writes!

8. Most thrilling, un-put-downable book in 2013?
Hm… I think I have to go with Shadowlands by Kate Brian. It was such a fun, interesting read and it kept me guessing until the very end.. And then I was mind blown! It’s been almost a year since it was published and I’m STILL mind blown by that ending!

9. Book in 2013 you are most likely to re-read next year?
I don’t do a lot of re-reads. But if I had to pick one… I think I’d re-read The Program by Suzanne Young. It was amazing and I’d love to re-read it so it’s fresh in my mind for when I read book two, The Treatment.

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2013?

Splintered These Broken Stars

11. Most memorable character in 2013?
Morpheus from Splintered by A.G. Howard – No contest!

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2013?
Definitely Splintered by A.G. Howard. Her writing is beautiful, vivid, descriptive, imaginative. It’s just gorgeous.

13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2013?
Shadowlands by Kate Brian really blew my mind.. I definitely had a Book Hangover from that one! Also, Sever by Lauren DeStefano. I pretty much had a heart attack while reading that book.. At least three heart attacks, to be exact.

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2013 to read?
Every single book Heather Lyons and Katie McGarry ever wrote. How did I survive without Kellan and Isaiah in my life?!?!?

15. Favorite passage/quote from a book you read in 2013?
All from Splintered by AG Howard:
“What happens in Wonderland stays in Wonderland”
“Thirty sprites touched your naked body?”
“I am a man in every way that counts!”

16. Shortest and longest book you read in 2013?
Shortest was… the Unnhinged (A.G. Howard) chapter sampler, which only had one chapter (maybe 20 pages?) in it. And I think the longest was probably Allegiant by Veronica Roth.

17. Book that had a scene in it that had you reeling and dying to talk to somebody about it?
The end of Shadowlands by Kate Brian!!! Mind. Blown.

18. Favorite relationship from a book you read in 2013?
Kaylee and Tod from Rachel Vincent’s Soul Screamers series. I love them together!!!

19. Favorite book you read in 2013 from an author that you’ve read previously?
Spellcaster by Claudia Gray. I’ve been reading her books for years and Spellcaster was amazing!

20. Best book you read in 2013 that you read based solely on a recommendation from someone else?
Someone recommended I read The Promise of Amazing by Robin Constantine, though I didn’t read a lot of contemporary at that time. But I loved it!!

21. Genre you read the most from in 2013?
Pretty sure I read a lot of Dystopian and Post-Apocalyptic. But I always do, so that isn’t a surprise.

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2013?
Morpheus!!!! *Swoons* Also, Kellan and Isaiah!!

23. Best debut 2013 debut you read?
Definitely Splintered by A.G. Howard

24. Most vivid world/imagery in a book you read in 2013?
No contest, it was Splintered by A.G. Howard (again)!!

25. Book that was the most fun to read in 2013?
Splintered by A.G. Howard. The writing just sucks you in and you can seriously picture yourself in Wonderland!

26. Book that made you cry or nearly cry in 2013?
Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry made me cry SEVERAL times.

27. Book you read in 2013 that you think got overlooked this year or when it came out?
Hmmm. I think any book that released on the same day as Allegiant got overlooked. There was so much hype for Allegiant… And it didn’t even live up to expectations for most readers, unfortunately.

2 reading-life-2013-1024x255

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2013?
That’s a totally unfair question because I started blogging in 2013 and that’s when discovered ALL the blogs I discovered. So.. that’s a lot of blogs! But I’ll narrow it down to my favorites:

Stacee @ Adventures of a Book Junkie – Stacee has been an amazing friend to me, and she is an amazing blogger. I love her epic posts, event recaps and giveaways! Plus, she spoils me with ARCs and I love her for it! <333333

Kayla @ The Bibliophilic Nerds – Kayla is like my blogging BFF. We DM so much, I’m surprised we haven’t landed in Twitter DM Jail! Her blog is gorgeous and she manages to read and review a LOT of books!

Crystal @ Crystal in Bookland – Crystal has been such an awesome friend! And she’s an epic blogger! She’s come so far and accomplished some amazing milestones already! She writes great reviews, too!

Stacie @ The Shy Book Nerd – Stacie and I have been friends for a LONG time now. She’s been there for me throughout a lot of stuff and she’s amazingly sweet and has an awesome blog!

Christina @ Ensconced in Lit – I look up to Christina in so many ways. Her blog is so awesome and she’s an amazing writer! She also hosts some kick-ass Twitter parties!

Jessica @ Just A Book Lover – I don’t know where I’d be without Jessica! She has answered so many of my obnoxious questions, I’d be lost if she hadn’t been there! She’s helped me in so many ways, I can’t even begin to thank her for it!

Alyssa @ The Eater of Books – Alyssa just celebrated her 1-year Blogoverary! I can see her celebrating her 10th year, if she decides to keep going! She’s an amazing blogger and she’s answered SO MANY of my questions over the last few months. She really has learned a lot in the last year and she’s always willing to pass that knowledge and advice to others.

Nova @ Musings of a Book Blogder – Nova is so fun to talk to on Twitter! She’s constantly coming up with new designs, names and features for her blog, which I think is awesome!

I know that isn’t everyone. I’m not purposely forgetting people, I promise! But if I named everyone, this list would be 30 people long, at least!

2. Favorite review you wrote in 2013?
I don’t know if I have a favorite, but I definitely feel like I’m improved in my review writing, overall, and I’m proud of myself for that.

3. Best discussion you had on your blog?
I haven’t done many discussion posts on my blog yet, but that’s one of my goals for 2014 – to have more discussions!

4. Most thought providing review or discussion you read on someone else’s blog?
That’s tough… I think there have been a number of bloggers who have thought-provoking discussions. There were a number of discussion posts about Blogging and ARCs, Goodreads and Twitter etiquette that I loved.

5. Best event that you participated in?
I got to attend a Harlequin Teen event in NYC, featuring Julie Kagawa and Jennifer L. Armentrout. I LOVE Julie Kagawa and this was the first big event I ever attended as a blogger, so that was incredible!

6. Best moment of your blogging/book life in 2013?
Hands down, when I requested Perfect Ruin by Lauren DeStefano and actually received the ARC from the publisher!! I had only been blogging for about 3 months at that point, so it felt like such a huge milestone for me!

7. Most popular post this year on your blog (whether by views or comments)?
I think my Best of 2013 Blog Hop giveaway. I had a LOT of views and entries from that post, and I gained a lot of new followers, too. It was such a fun blog hop to participate in, but it was so hard to narrow down my favorite books of 2013!

8. Post you wished got a little more love?
I thought my Re-Read/Review of The Hunger Games would get more attention, since it’s such a huge franchise, but only one or two people commented on it. I was more surprised than disappointed, though.

9. Best bookish discovery?
Honestly? Definitely discovering Inkslinger PR. They were the first to really take a chance on me and let me participate in eARC reviews, cover reveals and release-day activities.

10. Did you set any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of the year?
I didn’t, actually. Which is just as well, because I used to be a fast reader and blogging has slowed me down – that’s something I’m going to work on in 2014! And I’m definitely considering doing a challenge for 2014! Maybe I’ll start low, with 50 books or maybe I’ll push myself and go for 100 books!

3 2014-books-1024x255

1. One book that you didn’t get to in 2013, but will be your number one priority in 2014?
*Dies laughing* Soooooo many…. I guess first up will be Under the Never Sky and Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi because I have an eARC of Into the Still Blue.

2. Book you are most anticipating for 2014 (non-debut)?
Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins. It’s been described as Buffy with a southern twist. Needs no further explanation!

3. 2014 debut you are most anticipating?
There are so many amazing 2014 debuts coming out.. I’ve had the privilege of interviewing nineteen of those authors for a feature I’m doing for YA Interrobang and I don’t think I could pick just one.. I really don’t.

4. Series ending you are most anticipating in 2014?
Umm… I really don’t know O.o I haven’t been keeping track because so many of my favorite series’ ended in 2013. There aren’t many left that are ending in 2014 that I’m desperately dying for..

5. One thing you hope to accomplish or do in your reading/blogging in 2014?
I have so many goals I want to accomplish in the next few months! I used to be a fast reader and I’ve slowed down, so I want to pick up the pace again. I want to have more discussion posts on my blog and I want to come up with more creative and original content. I want to become a better reviewer – sometimes I feel like I’m too lenient in my reviews, or too unprofessional, so I want to work on that. Mostly, though, I just want to have fun. The last six months of my life have been the absolute best. I’ve met so many people and done so many amazing things – I just want that to continue!
