YOU CAN BE A VII IF YOU GIVE EVERYTHING.

For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.

If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked - surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.

There's only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed, and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that's not her own, she must decide which path to choose and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she's only beginning to understand.

I went into this book expecting one thing, and it was something else entirely. I don’t know how it happened or how I got so confused. I was positive I had read that, in order to move up in society, Kitty had to go through a labyrinth and fight her way to the end. And that, if she made it to the end, she would be rewarded with the society rank of a seven.

Despite the HUGE confusion this caused when I realized it wasn’t about that at all, I still really enjoyed this book. The plot and the writing were really interesting and very unique to the Dystopian genre. A lot of the “twists” and “shocking revelations” were not shocking, unfortunately. I found a lot of it very predictable. But again, that didn’t deter me from reading and I still found it interesting and unique.

As far as MC’s go, Kitty was kind of boring and passive. I felt indifferent towards her, I didn’t care what happened to her. It was almost like she was detached from her situation. She didn’t fight for anything, she just let it happen to her. I mean, being a good girl and behaving kept her alive, but all she did was complain about how she hated it and didn’t want to be a pawn and yet.. She didn’t fight. It wasn’t until the last twenty pages or so that Kitty finally started to stand up and rebel. She finally stood up for herself and what she believed in, and she did it with everything she had. At that point, I finally, finally liked Kitty.

Other characters I liked: Celia, Knox and Greyson. Celia was a bit crazy and intense, but she was also strong, brave and feisty. She believes so strongly in the things she fights for, even if her judgement is slightly clouded. And, above all, she stands up to Daxton and doesn’t let him shut her up.

While the love interests in this book weren’t exactly in a love triangle, I definitely felt myself taking sides. Benjy was okay, but I really, really loved Knox and I totally wanted him and Kitty to end up together. And finally, with Greyson… I can’t explain it, but there was just something about him. He was detached from his family and their craziness and he just wanted to be friend’s with Lila and be left alone to invent things.

Clearly, I hated Augusta and Daxton. Augusta was just crazy and insane. And Daxton was a manipulative jerk who.. Well, I don’t want to give anything away, but the revelation with his character was very intriguing!

Overall, despite the flat MC and predictability, I did still enjoy Pawn. I would have rated it a 4, had it not been for those things. I’m still looking forward to the second book in the series, especially since Kitty showed some promise at the end of Pawn. I’m excited to see what happens next.

While Morganville, Texas, is often a troubled town, Claire Danvers and her friends are looking forward to coming home. But the Morganville they return to isn’t the one they know; it’s become a different place—a deadly one…

Something drastic has happened in Morganville while Claire and her friends were away. The town looks cleaner and happier than they’ve ever seen it before, but when their incoming group is arrested and separated—vampires from humans—they realize that the changes definitely aren’t for the better.

It seems that an organization called the Daylight Foundation has offered the population of Morganville something they’ve never had: hope of a vampire-free future. And while it sounds like salvation—even for the vampires themselves—the truth is far more sinister and deadly.

Now, Claire, Shane and Eve need to find a way to break their friends out of Daylighter custody, before the vampires of Morganville meet their untimely end

Daylighters was a spectacular end to an amazing series. I’ve had my ups and downs with the Morganville books. The series started out amazing, fell flat in the middle, hit a low point in book ten (Bite Club) that lasted for two more books after that – And then, it started redeeming itself in book thirteen (Bitter Blood), and Fall of Night (Book fourteen) built up to an amazing conclusion in Daylighters.

One of my biggest issues throughout this series has been its length. It always felt too long, like it was dragged out and should have ended ages ago. But throughout everything, I still loved and cared about the characters. I feared for their safety and wondered what would happen to them. I’m very character-driven when it comes to the books I read and these characters definitely kept me reading!

There was so much growth in all of the characters. Claire started out as a scared, innocent little girl and grew into this amazing woman who could fight her own battles and protect herself. She was smart and resilient, always managing to get herself out of whatever dilemma she faced.

Shane started out as an arrogant, vampire-hating badass. He’s still badass in Daylighters, but he’s matured. Instead of diving head-first into every battle – whether or not he can win – he thinks before he fights. He listens to his friends and he works with them as a team. And he doesn’t hate ALL vampires now.. So that’s a plus!

Eve has probably changed the least, though she has matured a lot throughout the books. But I’m okay with her not changing as much as the others. She’s lovable, goth-girl Eve and I like that she matured so much, but I also like that she didn’t completely change at the end of the books. She wouldn’t be Eve if she changed too much!

And Michael. Oh, Michael. Honestly, I’m pretty sure Michael went through the most throughout the series, what with being human, then a ghost, then a vampire, then… Well, read the books to find out what happens to him in Daylighters! Hint: I LOVE where his character ended up in the end!!!

I love that this core group of friends STAYED friends. They went through so much together and they (like the series) had their ups and downs. But they stuck it out and stayed together, fought together and survived together. I love where they, as a group, ended up in Daylighters. I love where the couples ended up, as well. I totally, completely love Claire & Shane and Michael & Eve!!! If anything had happened to them.. I would have ugly cried. A lot.

And, of course, no review would be complete without discussing the vampires of Morganville, who went through varying stages of change throughout the series. They went from ruling the food chain, diseased and distressed, to being under the commanding thumb of Bishop, cured eventually. They almost died at the watery hands of the Draug, and then the Daylight Foundation nearly wiped them out. Though vampires are predators, and they certainly acted like predators throughout much of the series, they were also often prey. And though the Daylighters’ intentions were good (in their eyes), they were pure evil and I hated them!

A big plus for me with Daylighters was that it was told completely from Claire’s POV. The last few books have used multiple POVs (Amelie, Oliver, Eve, Michael, Shane – they all had a moment in the spotlight). Now, I love these characters and I’m not saying I hated the mutliple POVs, but at times, it was just too many people speaking. I’m fine with two, maybe three POVs, but more than that and it feels like the author was running out of things to say and could only push through the story by adding other perspectives. Not cool! Plus, this was Claire’s story, above and beyond anyone else’s. She started the story in Glass Houses, so it was only right that she completed her story in Daylighters.

Speaking of Glass Houses… The magical, haunted Glass House played a HUGE role in Daylighters and I had some heart-in-throat moments with it!! I don’t want to spoil you, so you’ll have to read it to find out more but.. OMG!!!

Overall, I really loved Daylighters. As I mentioned previously, this series had its ups and downs and, unfortunately, the downs really got me down. But Bitter Blood, Fall of Night and Daylighters renewed my faith in this series. Bitter Blood and Fall of Night built up to an amazing, epic conclusion and Daylighters was a satisfying ending to this beloved series. Bravo, Rachel Caine! And thank you for giving Claire, Shane, Michael and Eve a satisfying and (mostly) happy ending!

Ryan lowers his lips to my ear. "Dance with me, Beth."

"No." I whisper the reply. I hate him and I hate myself for wanting him to touch me again....

"I dare you..."

If anyone knew the truth about Beth Risk's home life, they'd send her mother to jail and seventeen-year-old Beth who knows where. So she protects her mom at all costs. Until the day her uncle swoops in and forces Beth to choose between her mom's freedom and her own happiness. That's how Beth finds herself living with an aunt who doesn't want her and going to a school that doesn't understand her. At all. Except for the one guy who shouldn't get her, but does....

Ryan Stone is the town golden boy, a popular baseball star jock-with secrets he can't tell anyone. Not even the friends he shares everything with, including the constant dares to do crazy things. The craziest? Asking out the Skater girl who couldn't be less interested in him.

But what begins as a dare becomes an intense attraction neither Ryan nor Beth expected. Suddenly, the boy with the flawless image risks his dreams-and his life-for the girl he loves, and the girl who won't let anyone get too close is daring herself to want it all....

I was really looking forward to Dare You To, thanks in large part to the sneak-peeks we got of Beth in Pushing the Limits. Dare You To definitely did not disappoint!

I really wasn’t a fan of Ryan in the beginning. He was cocky and way too full of himself. He was also highly amusing – The big, tough jock boy who hits on girls for dares, yet he doesn’t like a girl who curses. It was kind of hilarious. He definitely does grow throughout the book, though it happens very slowly. He’s stubborn and refuses to give up the dares right away, which in my opinion, holds him back a lot.

But Ryan also has a lot going on in his life that makes him vulnerable. He has a tough home life, one that looks perfect on the outside but is far from it on the inside. His parents fight, his dad threw his brother (Mark) out for.. reasons that I won’t go into to avoid spoilers. But I will say they were dumb reasons! We don’t see a lot of Mark, but the few times we do, I really loved him! And, of course, Ryan wants to do one thing with his life and his father wants him to do another, so that causes all sorts of drama.

About halfway (maybe a little more) through the book, Ryan reveals something to Beth and, it’s silly, but it made me really like him a lot more. He and Beth were so sweet together when they let their walls down, and Ryan could really be pretty romantic when he wanted to be!

Beth is great. Honestly, so far she’s my favorite of the female characters. She has a really tough life. She has a lot of trust issues and refuses to let people in. She builds this wall up and refuses to let it down. I completely shipped her and Isaiah the whole time, from the beginning of Pushing the Limits until the end of Dare You To. Several people told me I’d understand why their relationship ended the way it did in Dare You To and that I’d stop shipping them, but I still totally want them to end up together! Maybe my feelings will change in Crash Into You, when I see Isaiah with Rachel. We’ll see. But for now, I want Isaiah and Beth to fall happily ever after!

Beth deals with so much in Dare You To: her mom’s self-destruction, her uncle swooping in to “save” her, a new school, new friends and way too many changes than she is comfortable with.

I had a lot of trouble figuring Scott out. One second he was an ass and I hated him, the next he was like a big Papa Bear, ready to defend Beth from all the evils of the world. It was hard to figure out his motives at first. I really wanted to trust him and I really wanted Beth to be able to trust him. I do like where there relationship ended up, though, when all was said and done.

Lacy was such a great character! I loved that she wasn’t completely popular, wasn’t torn between befriending Beth and staying in with the popular crowd. She stuck by Beth no matter how many times Beth tried to shut everyone out. She stood up to Gwen and even fought with her best friends – Ryan, Chris (her boyfriend) and Logan – when she felt she had to in order to defend Beth.

And Chris and Logan were… Ah. Well, they had their moments when they were great friends to Ryan, but they also had moments where they let Beth’s reputation and their obsession with baseball get between them and Ryan. It was a slippery slope throughout the book.

The end was heart-pounding and insane. The stakes were much higher for Beth and Ryan’s actions in Dare You To then there was with Echo and Noah in Pushing the Limits. Lives were literally at stake at the end of Dare You To.

Katie McGarry is an amazing writer. I love how she can tie up all the loose ends at the end of each of her books while still leaving enough open for the possibility of a sequel. I also love the way she carries her main characters from one book over to the next book. They play integral parts in the storyline, but they don’t overshadow the true main characters of the book. It leaves you truly excited for the next book in the series! I know, for me personally, I’m DYING to start Crash Into You! We saw a good amount of Isaiah in Pushing the Limits but because of his ties to Beth, we saw a lot of him in Dare You To and I’m really eager to see how his story unfolds now.

While I didn’t like Ryan as much as Noah, I loved Beth and Ryan did grow on me! Overall, Dare You To was an amazing read and I can’t wait to read more of McGarry’s books!

So wrong for each other...AND YET SO RIGHT.

No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with "freaky" scars on her arms. Even Echo can't remember the whole truth.

But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his surprising understanding, Echo's world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common.

Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can PUSH THE LIMITS and what she'll risk for the one guy who might teach her HOW TO LOVE AGAIN.

Pushing the Limits is one of my favorite YA contemporaries, by far. I cried so many times, I lost count! I loved Noah and Echo so much, I couldn’t put this book down! I had to get to the end as fast as possible so I could find out the truth and see how it all ended!

I did.. 49 status updates on Goodreads while reading this book. Pretty sure that’s the most I’ve ever done for any book. There were so many feels! I cried.. a lot. I was angry, mad, sad – My emotions felt like they were on a roller-coaster! And books rarely make me cry.. Maybe I cry once or twice, and usually at the end. I was only 16 pages in to Pushing the Limits and I started crying!

Echo was an intense character. She was that popular girl that everyone loved, until the accident that stripped it all away – an accident she couldn’t even remember. To add insult to injury, her brother – the one person who understood her and made her feel better – is gone. The fall-out from that event, which happens before the book begins, was tough enough but the domino effect it caused is truly what ruined Echo’s life.

Echo does everything she can to please her father, but it’s never good enough. And her bimbo step-mom says all the wrong things at all the wrong times. Intentional or not, she doesn’t help the situation. Throughout the majority of the book, I wanted to punch her father and bitch-slap her step-mother!

Noah is such a complex character. Deep down, he’s a good guy. But the people who should have loved him unconditionally are gone, and the foster system has stripped away any trust he might have had in adults and authority figures. The only people he can truly rely on are Beth and Isaiah. Until he meets Echo. Noah’s relationship with his brother’s brought out his soft side, the person he kept hidden from the world. Those moments, in my opinion, were the most real and raw.

Noah’s biggest issue? He was very judgmental in the beginning, refusing to believe that someone as “perfect” as Echo could be imperfect. She was the popular girl with daddy’s money and the hot boyfriend. He never stopped to think that maybe her life wasn’t as perfect as he assumed. And that was another problem – he just assumed things. He crossed a lot of lines and he’s lucky Echo forgave him!

At one point, Echo said the following about Noah, “What an odd combination of romantic gesture and horribly crude wording.” I think this one sentence, above and beyond anything else, sums Noah up completely!

I loved Mrs. Collins. The symmetry between her relationship with Noah and her relationship with Echo was interesting. Neither Echo nor Noah wanted to trust her, and they rebelled against her at every turn. But she never gave up on them and never let them shut her out, no matter how hard she tried. I loved that she stood up against Echo’s father and I loved that she helped Noah push back against the same system that had screwed him over years before.

All the secondary characters in this book were amazing. They all had a part to play and they all played their parts well. I seriously loved Beth and Isaiah. They each get their own books in Dare You To (Beth) and Crash Into You (Isaiah). I’ve already read Dare You To (review to come soon) and I can tell you, it was amazing. Pushing the Limits gave us a great sneak-peak of Beth and what was to come in Dare You To. And I’m completely in love with Isaiah and can’t wait to get his story in Crash Into You!

Echo’s friends were… interesting. Lila was the ultimate best friend, standing by Echo no matter what. Natalie was a close second, though she seemed to waver a little bit when it came to defending Echo. Grace was an utter failure of a friend. Honestly, she really can’t even be called a friend. She was too wrapped up in social standing and popularity to see that she was pushing away a friend in need. Who you date shouldn’t define your self worth or your social life. But Grace didn’t understand that. And Luke.. Ugh, I can’t even with Luke. I refuse to give him the time of day. He was just a jerk!

By the end of the book, I was an emotional wreck. The revelations were shocking and horrifying. But, in the end, all the dominoes fell into place. Noah and Echo were complete opposites, yet exactly the same. They hid from the world, they had secrets they wanted to keep from others and wounds that would never heal. And then they met each other and they complemented each other perfectly. I rooted for them from start to finish, and I would do it again!

Honestly, I don’t read many contemporaries, and I don’t often fall head-over-heels for the ones I do read. But I fell for Pushing the Limits and I would read it again and again if I could. Anyone who isn’t a fan of contemporary should DEFINITELY give this book a chance! It might just surprise you!

From acclaimed author Katie McGarry comes an explosive new tale of a good girl with a reckless streak, a street-smart guy with nothing to lose, and a romance forged in the fast lane

The girl with straight As, designer clothes and the perfect life-that's who people expect Rachel Young to be. So the private-school junior keeps secrets from her wealthy parents and overbearing brothers...and she's just added two more to the list. One involves racing strangers down dark country roads in her Mustang GT. The other? Seventeen-year-old Isaiah Walker-a guy she has no business even talking to. But when the foster kid with the tattoos and intense gray eyes comes to her rescue, she can't get him out of her mind.

Isaiah has secrets, too. About where he lives, and how he really feels about Rachel. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a rich girl who wants to slum it on the south side for kicks-no matter how angelic she might look.

But when their shared love of street racing puts both their lives in jeopardy, they have six weeks to come up with a way out. Six weeks to discover just how far they'll go to save each other.

Crash Into You absolutely broke me and I loved every minute of it. Forget Book Hangover, this is a Book Coma! I have so many feels… The last third or so of the book was such an emotional roller-coaster! I’m pretty sure this might be my least coherent review ever…

So, let’s start with the obvious: I frickin’ LOVE Isaiah. We see small glances of him in Pushing the Limits and I knew I liked him and the dynamic between him, Noah and Beth. His personality was rough, yet it was obvious there was more to him. Because of his connection to Beth, we saw a lot of Isaiah in Dare You To. He had moments where my heart broke for him, and moments where I just wanted to slap him for the way he was treating Beth. Yes, he did it so she could create a better life for herself, because he was protective of her. But I still hated that they were fighting. I shipped Isaiah and Beth so hard in Pushing the Limits and Dare You To, it’s not even funny.

But in Crash Into You, Isaiah takes center stage and I swooned so hard over him. I was only twelve pages in when I fell hard for Isaiah, and he continued to sweep me off my feet the entire time. He opens himself up to Rachel and has moments of vulnerability that allow us to see underneath the tough exterior he has built around himself. He is fiercely loyal to those he calls friends/family. He doesn’t trust easily, but once he does, he puts it all on the line.

Rachel starts off painfully shy and, as she sees herself, weak. Rachel’s situation broke my heart for so many reasons and I could kind of relate to her and what she was going through – though my situation wasn’t nearly as bad as hers. The way her family treated her, especially her parents.. I just wanted to punch her parents! They were so obsessed with the past, so focused on pretending everything was okay and protecting one another from the truth. Secrets and lies invaded this family to a frightening degree and it cost them a lot. It almost cost them everything, in fact. In the end, they seemed to work things out, though they have a long way to go.

Rachel’s brothers irritated me a lot, too. They were way, way over-protective of her – though I also found some of the things they said and did hilarious! Ethan and West definitely grew on me, and I’m really excited for West’s story in May! Some of the things they put Rachel through, though, absolutely gave me a heart attack!

I hated Abby in the beginning. And then, about halfway through the book, she did something that surprised me and completely changed how I felt about her. As the story progressed, she came to be one of my absolute favorite “best friend” characters. I really hope she gets her own story at some point! I’d love to learn more about her and her life.

To be honest, before I started reading it, I wasn’t sure about Crash Into You. I’m not a big fan of street racing and though I know cars, I’m not a fanatic. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about Isaiah with someone that wasn’t Beth. But Rachel and Isaiah are amazing together. They have chemistry that can’t be denied and I absolutely love them as a couple! They are, without a doubt, my favorite couple of all Katie McGarry’s couples! And Crash Into You was absolutely my favorite of the books!

The ending was… INSANE! CRAZY! HEART-POUNDING! GASP-INDUCING! I mean… If you follow me on Goodreads, you can see my reactions to the last 25 or so pages. And if you don’t follow me on Goodreads, this is what it looked like (Apologies for the language! I was freaking out!):

Picture 3

Basically, I lost the ability to form coherent thought. INSANE! ALL THE FEELS! TOTAL BOOK COMA!

Katie McGarry is a truly gifted story-teller and I’m anxious for Take Me On (West’s story, May 2014). I’m fully prepared for all the feels *Stocks up on tissues* And if you haven’t read these books… WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? GO GO GO!!!

Blog Tour Interview + Giveaway: The Prophecy by Erin Albert

Prophecy Blog Tour Banner

Hey everyone! I’m so excited to be a part of Erin Albert’s blog tour for her debut novel, The Prophecy (November 15, 2013)! For my blog tour stop, I have an interview with Erin. Plus, there is an awesome giveaway! Here’s some more information about The Prophecy:

The Prophecy

Growing up on a small farm in the kingdom of Vanguard, seventeen-year-old Layla Givens lives a deceptively tranquil existence. But her carefully constructed life quickly falls apart when she’s abducted by a religious zealot who proclaims her The Fulfillment of an ancient peace prophecy and whisks her away to marry her greatest enemy.

Wilhelm, Prince of the Ethereals, is reluctant to meet his new bride. He’s grown up believing Vanguards are evil, an enemy to fight and fear…not love. Can he set aside his prejudices and work alongside Layla to bring lasting peace after centuries of war?

Nash, a loner who has never fit in, carries a huge secret, one big enough to destroy both kingdoms. When he accidently meets Layla, he’s no longer content to live in the shadows, but he must resist his growing attraction—for her safety and for the longevity of the two kingdoms.

When Nash’s secret is revealed, a firestorm sweeps through both realms, with Layla at the center. Now she must choose between duty and desire while the fate of two nations hangs in the balance.

And here’s a blog-tour exclusive blurb of The Prophecy:

“Everything must be taken down.” A rotund man, with beady black eyes, surveyed the town, disdain in his expression. While he did not appear distinguishable from the other black and purple clad men, he spoke with authority. “The First Ones and their great Prophecy must be honored properly.” He sniffed, his actions indicating the very existence of Medlin and its occupants offended him.

Layla wondered what this man considered a “proper honoring” of the First Ones. The First Ones…they’d been dead for centuries, and, as far as Layla could tell, hadn’t done much in life except start a never-ending war. She knew nothing more about them except that she was to thank them for good things, curse them for bad, and celebrate them on this day.

“That’s Elder Werrick, head of the Ecclesiastics,” whispered Samson, glancing back at Grant. Layla noticed the look that passed between them.

Grant nodded his assent. “Get her out of here, brother.”

Samson tried to steer Layla away, but she held her position to get a closer look at the man whom her family so feared. She knew they had good reason to worry—her black hair and purple eyes marked her as a Fulfillment candidate, one with the potential to bring about the long awaited peace. But she couldn’t quite bring herself to believe Elder Werrick would notice her on the crowded streets, especially with her eye drops and hood. Could he really be responsible for dragging candidates from their homes, forcing them to undergo strenuous, sometimes gruesome, testing for the sake of the Prophecy? To Layla, he looked like nothing more than a short, fat, unhappy man. The very notion that he could strike such fear into the hearts of her people seemed almost laughable…almost. As his gaze swept over the crowd, she glimpsed a sinister undertone that made her shiver.

Waving his pudgy arms at the awaiting townspeople, Werrick commanded, “Take it down.”

Suddenly, his body stilled and his tiny eyes grew wide. They briefly connected with Layla’s, narrowing with calculation. The Elder turned to his nearest black clad companion.

“Do you feel that?” Layla heard Werrick ask.

The other man looked skeptical. “Feel what, Elder?”

Werrick leaned in as the two whispered, stealing furtive glances in her direction. When the Elder’s companion pointed at Layla, Samson grabbed her arm. She heard his breathing change from rhythmic to jagged as he pulled her away from the men.

“We have to go now.” His urgency spurred her into action.

Grant moved to block them from the Elder’s view. “Get her away from here, Samson.”

The Elder looked up to see everyone staring at him as if frozen. He repeated his demand, “I said take everything down.”

The townspeople, joined by the Elder’s minion, scampered to remove their decorations, anxious to “properly” celebrate the First Ones. Their flurry of activity concealed Layla as Samson and Grant escorted her away. Layla scanned the streets, horrified, as the people of Medlin stripped the town’s center barren. In no time, everything appeared as it always had, devoid of any celebratory adornments. She looked up at the sky with its gray clouds lingering overhead. A bad omen…

On the hill, a safe distance away, Layla watched a group of Ecclesiastics erect a monstrous stage where the donkey races should have occurred. She heard the braying of the angry animals, harnessed and corralled on the orders of the Elder to avoid interfering with the “true” Day of Dawning celebration. Her ire rose. Who did they think they were coming in and changing everything?

An icy, phantom finger traced a frigid line down her spine. After hearing warning after warning from the Mantars her whole life, Layla knew exactly what the Ecclesiastics could do, what they had done to others in the past. Maybe Samson and Grant had been right. Maybe she should never have come, especially today. Layla turned her back on the town, resolved to go home, to safety.

“Layla!” Samson’s alarmed tone sliced into her, and she swung around toward him.

To her horror, two Vanguard soldiers forced Samson to the ground. She knew just how much strength he possessed, yet he couldn’t free himself. Her hands balled up into fists, shaking with their desire to unleash the full force of their fury.

“Run!” Samson screamed before a soldier’s fist smashed into his face.

His body stilled. Panic, coupled with indecision, crippled her. She should run like Samson commanded, but she couldn’t leave him lying there. To her relief, Grant ambled toward them, his eyes full of rage.

“Run!” Grant echoed Samson’s warning.

With a final glance at the two boys who’d been as close to her as brothers, Layla fled. She flew down the hill, swinging her head from side to side in alarm. Ecclesiastics swarmed throughout the city, making a clear escape route difficult to discern.

Terror rose within Layla. Why hadn’t she listened to her family? She’d been foolish to believe she could sneak around under the ever-watchful eyes of the Ecclesiastics, and that hubris put Samson and Grant in danger as well. She choked back a sob.

“Run,” she whispered.

Willing her feet to move forward, Layla darted toward the back of the baker’s shop, hoping to take a shortcut through the back alleyway. She swerved to miss a wooden box and stumbled, arms flailing to right herself. Unfamiliar hands reached out to break her fall. Once stable, Layla looked up to find Elder Werrick staring down at her. She screamed but no sound came out of her open mouth.

“I’ve been looking for you,” he said, a wicked smile on his face.

And now here’s the interview! Hope you guys enjoy it!

Question: Describe your book, using no more than three adjectives. Go!
Answer: Fast-paced, action-packed, entertaining (I hope). LOL!

Question: The Prophecy has a gorgeous cover! What is the meaning behind the design?
Answer: Thank you!! The lovely Marion Sipe created the cover, but Dream Team member Danielle Craver designed the crests. Danielle is super in to researching the significance of things, so each element on the crest has a meaning. First of all, the color…red is a powerful color, and the Vanguards are powerful people. All of the symbols on the crest point to strength, which is the Vanguard supernatural gift, and combat. The Vanguards are more violent and hot-headed than their Ethereal counterparts. Danielle said the short answer to this question would be: a symbol of strength and combat, especially in women.

Question: What drew you to writing about magic and kingdoms and destiny?
Answer: I have always been fascinated with the old world feel of kings, queens, and castles. When Game of Thrones came out, I witnessed George R.R. Martin’s masterful combination of fantastical elements with old world charm. I think that, combined with my love of Arthurian legend, sparked the creation of The Prophecy.

Question: The Prophecy has Ethereals and Vanguards. Whose side are you on?
Answer: I’m not sure I’m on a side per se. But I guess since Layla, my main character, is a Vanguard, I’ll choose them. I love working out and boxing, so I could dig the supernatural strength they possess. I also think their faster paced lifestyle would jive better with my ADD than the more relaxed and laid back Ethereal lifestyle.

Question: How do you feel about love triangles? Does The Prophecy have one?
Answer: I like love triangles as long as they are done well (read: no whiny female). The Prophecy appears to have a love triangle, but I don’t really think it does. There are mysterious forces at work that affect how characters perceive one another.

Question: What scene do you most regret having to cut? On the flip side, what was your favorite scene that got added during edits?
Answer: You know what…I don’t think I cut out any whole scenes. My story went through a major rewrite just before I got my contract, so I think I removed all the parts that weren’t beneficial then. And I have to say, I didn’t miss any of those scenes.

My favorite re-write in the editing phase was the scene between King Jesper and his wife, Queen Sansolena. I think I only skimmed the surface of their interaction pre-edits, but the whole thing really came to life during work with my content editor, Katie Carroll.

Question: Biggest writing quirk?
Answer: At 3:30 every day, I must have a little container of chocolate and a Diet Pepsi with Lime. If I don’t get that, Grumpy Erin emerges… ;)

Question: What are three must-have items when you sit down to write?
Answer: I must have my laptop (I don’t write by hand—my brain works way faster than I can handwrite and almost faster than I can type), my bed (my “workspace”), and my cellphone (for checking Twitter during writing breaks—LOL). ;)

Question: What book are you currently reading?
Answer: I am currently reading House of Hades by Rick Riordan. Following that, I will be reading Fiery Heart (Bloodlines #4) by Richelle Mead, and Vicious by Victoria Schwab.

Question: Which book was your favorite read of 2013 (so far)? Are you looking forward to any new releases in particular between now and 2014?
Answer: Hands down, my favorite book of 2013 has been Clockwork Princess. I am looking SO forward to the release of Fiery Heart this year and Forever Song (Blood of Eden #3) in 2014.

Question: Are you working on anything new?
Answer: The Prophecy is part of a trilogy, and the other two books (tentatively titled The Outlanders and The Fulfillment) are in the revision stage. I also have a YA futuristic thriller, middle-grade coming-of-age, women’s chick lit, and another YA fantasy in the works.

Not long ago, Chloe Lilywhite seemingly had it all: a prized spot on the Magicals’ Council as lead Creator, a loving fiancé and Connection, and a wealth of good friends. But the poised young woman she projected was nothing more than a façade. Her parents all but disowned her. Power plays and accusations of murder within the Council rocked her confidence. And most difficult of all, her secret, a secondary Connection to Jonah’s twin brother, Kellan, became painfully impossible to resist. Desperate to gain control over her rapidly unraveling existence, Chloe did the unthinkable: she ran away.

Now living and working in Alaska under an alias, Chloe is slowly discovering who she is and, more importantly, who she wants to be. But the more she tries to leave the Magical world behind, the harder it becomes to stay hidden. The Elders are back with a vengeance, and the stakes have never been higher. Chloe finally has to make a choice: embrace her pre-ordained Fate or pave her own way in the worlds. One thing’s for sure, though—she’s finally up for the challenge.

*This is a New Adult title, suitable for readers 18+.

I have loved this entire series, including Jonah’s novella, Beyond Fate – though I’m totally Team Kellan *Swoons* But A Matter of Truth is my favorite installment in the series, hands down. I could simply say, “I loved everything about it,” and end the review right there, because it’s true. But I’ll try to go into more detail, without stepping into spoiler territory.

First of all, I loved seeing Chloe away from Annar. I know, I know – How is that possible? Jonah and Kellan are in Annar! But it allowed us to see a different side of Chloe, to see her alone and on her own without anyone or anything influencing her or her actions and decisions. We get to see how Chloe deals with every day life, using little to no magic.

The cast of characters that Chloe is surrounded with in Alaska – Will, Cameron, Paul, Frieda, etc – is amazing. I especially liked Will and Cameron. Though Will is no Jonah (Or, Kellan, really), he’s an amazing person and he’s always there for Chloe, no matter what. And Cameron is the dad Chloe deserves to have. I was a little bit suspicious of Cameron, though. I can’t totally put my finger on why, but I just had this weird feeling. Turns out, I was partially right in my suspicions!

A few times, I was so desperate to know what was happening in Annar, I almost wished for some kind of dual POV. But not knowing, just as Chloe didn’t know, added to the anxiety of her eventual return, when she would have to face the consequences of her actions.

The coupling in these books always amuses me! I love Cora and Raul, but wish we could have seen more of them. Will and Callie were hysterical together, and I’m excited to see how that unfolds. As for Cameron and Astrid, they were adorable!

I really hated Chloe’s mom in A Matter of Fate (Fate #1). Like, I despised her. As of now, I’ve downgraded that to just “dislike,” though it borderlines on “like.” I DID enjoy Jonah attacking her parenting style, though we didn’t actually get to see what he said. It was still funny to imagine!

Jonah was… Despite being Team Kellan, I really felt bad for Jonah in AMOT. So, so many feels! We saw some sides to him in AMOT that I don’t think we’ve seen before. I liked that his and Chloe’s fighting was realistic. Despite Fate shoving them together, they had to really work together to mend their broken relationship. They didn’t immediately fall back into their old habits, and that was great. But I felt so, so bad for Kellan. He always seems get the short end of the stick! Especially with Sophie.. Man, she was insane and scary and I kept waiting for her to try something. I’m still convinced she will in the next book! All I know is, Chloe and Kellan need to watch their backs!

The revelations and twists in this book were amazing. And the ending was shocking! I couldn’t believe when I finished reading and it just ENDED like that! I need more! I want more!! I have to see what happens next! Ack!!

As usual, Heather Lyons did an amazing, fabulous job and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book! If you haven’t read these books… Well, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?? GO!!! Check them out on Amazon! You won’t regret it, I promise you!!

Interview + Giveaway: The Promise of Amazing by Robin Constantine

Hey everyone! I’m so excited to have Robin Constantine, author of The Promise of Amazing (December 31, 2013) here for an interview today! Here’s the official Goodreads excerpt for the book:

Promise of Amazing

Wren Caswell is average. Ranked in the middle of her class at Sacred Heart, she’s not popular, but not a social misfit. Wren is the quiet, “good” girl who’s always done what she’s supposed to—only now in her junior year, this passive strategy is backfiring. She wants to change, but doesn’t know how.

Grayson Barrett was the king of St. Gabe’s. Star of the lacrosse team, top of his class, on a fast track to a brilliant future—until he was expelled for being a “term paper pimp.” Now Gray is in a downward spiral and needs to change, but doesn’t know how.

One fateful night their paths cross when Wren, working at her family’s Arthurian-themed catering hall, performs the Heimlich on Gray as he chokes on a cocktail weenie, saving his life literally and figuratively. What follows is the complicated, awkward, hilarious, and tender tale of two teens shedding their pasts, figuring out who they are—and falling in love.

Hope you guys enjoy the interview!

Question: Describe your books, using no more than three adjectives. Go!
Answer: Fun, sexy, Jersey (if Jersey can be an adjective!)

Question: Wren was such a down-to-earth and relatable character. What elements went into writing her?
Answer: Wren started ‘talking’ to me in jury duty. I was actually working on a different novel at the time, but decided to amuse myself with some free writing (because you need amusement during jury duty!!) and the first lines came through. She was serious but funny – it’s a fine line writing a teenage voice – there needs to be drama/angst but it can’t be ‘oh woe is me’ (although, who isn’t a bit ‘woe is me’ at times!) I really liked her and had a whole different story plotted out for her – but when the time came to write it, in walked Grayson and he was a game changer.

Question: I really related to Wren being quiet in the beginning, that being quit was “not a character flaw.” Can you explain where this concept came from? Is this something you experienced when you were younger?
Answer: Wren is probably the most personal character I’ve ever written, so much so that halfway through writing I thought…um, maybe I need to change her ‘bird’ name! I loved the name Wren because it’s short and strong, and that’s why I chose it, or it chose me. Not sure. She’s just always been Wren from day one.

I totally experienced (and still do) a ‘quiet’ backlash. Wren’s NHS evaluation came right from my own experience and it left me mystified and confused. I think being quiet can sometimes come off as arrogance or ignorance or snobbiness or disinterest – which is all about as far from the truth as possible. For years it did feel like a character flaw. I chose Communication Studies as my major in college to help me ‘get over it’ – so I had tons of public speaking classes and classes in front of the camera, and I loved it but I’m still quiet by nature.

I thought it would be interesting to have a character with these struggles because there’s also a strange dichotomy with being quiet – sometimes you’re not. I know for me, I’m not that quiet around my family or friends. And when you find people you’re totally comfortable with – they accept your ‘quietness’ and usually then you’re not quiet around them. And I think it’s possible to come out of your shell and still be quiet. Quiet is not a negative. It took me a long time to understand that.

Question: Grayson felt like a very complex character, with two very different sides to his personality. Was he a difficult character to write? Where did you get the inspiration for him?
Answer: Grayson was a minor character in a different novel that I ended up scrapping. Anytime he showed up on the page, he kept stealing the scenes. And he was so different from any character I’d ever written. I loved the idea of having someone less than perfect as a love interest but as I started drafting The Promise of Amazing, I realized Grayson was more than just Wren’s love interest. He had his own story to tell so I experimented by writing from his POV for a while and I loved it. Writing from a male perspective was challenging yet oddly liberating. Grayson has a creative way of expressing himself! Experiencing him getting in so deep with his friends and wondering if he could get himself out of it was difficult to write. Underneath it all, Grayson is a good guy who wants to do the right thing but he’s also a teenager who doesn’t always take into account the consequences of his actions.

Question: Were there any scenes you wish you hadn’t had to cut?
Answer: There was a whole storyline with Madison being involved with Wren’s brother Josh that I loved but it didn’t make sense to the story as a whole, so I decided to take it out before we even subbed the manuscript. They were adorable together!!

Question: On the flip side, were there any scenes that got added during edits that you’re really pleased with?
Answer: Yes!! The scene with the girls getting ready for Andy’s party where they talk to Madison via Skype was added in edits and it’s one of my favorites. (In my original version Madison went to the party.) That was a lot of fun to write.

Question: What books would you recommend to a reader who loved yours, and wants to read something similar?
Answer: Perfect Chemisty by Simone Elkeles and Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry.

Question: As a 2013 Debut Author yourself, which 2013 debuts have you read and enjoyed so far? And which upcoming 2013 debuts are you most looking forward to?
Answer: I actually consider myself a 2014 debut, even though my release date is December 31st! I’ve had an incredible time getting to know other OneFours, there are some amazing debuts coming out this year! But since I have my foot in 2013 also…hmmm…I loved INSOMNIA by JR Johansson – so creepy. And I just finished BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA by April Genevieve Tucholke – which was so atmospheric and descriptive and made me want to have a picnic and watch old movies. I loved it.

It is really really hard to pick out which 2014 debuts I’m looking forward to most because seriously, I could list them all. It’s going to be an awesome year for debuts!! But if I had to choose…I’m really looking forward to PRISONER OF NIGHT AND FOG by Anne Blankman, SIDE EFFECTS MAY VARY by Julie Murphy and NO PLACE TO FALL by Jaye Robin Brown.**

Question: Biggest writing quirk?
Answer: I talk to myself. A lot. Sometimes it’s to hear how a bit of dialogue will sound, sometimes it’s about making a certain facial expression and trying to explain it in a more creative way than “he furrowed his brow” or “she rolled her eyes”. I even talk out scenes when I’m driving. If you ever caught me driving home from a critique group meeting you’d think I was on the phone. I’m happy Bluetooth exists or else I’d look completely crazy.

Question: Are you working on anything new?
Answer: I’m working on a companion novel for The Promise of Amazing, told from Madison’s POV along with a new male character who I’m already in love with. It’s not a continuation of the story, but a completely new set of circumstances a few months after TPofA takes place. It’s been a challenge shifting gears, but I love it because Madison is so different from Wren. I also love it because Wren, Grayson and Jazz are in it too!!
