Once Upon a Time: 2016 Backlist Feature Roundup

Once Upon a Time Image Main
Hey guys! As you may know, I recently launched my new feature, Once Upon a Time. If you didn’t get a chance to check out the intro post, you can read it here! To sum it up: Once Upon a Time is a backlist feature that not only helps me showcase some really amazing authors and their backlist titles, but also allows me to share with you some of the books that I read when I was younger and that are still favorites now. These are the books that shaped me as a reader and made me feel less alone as a teen.

Today, I want to take a moment to highlight some other epic backlist features happening this year – because it seems that 2016 is the Year of the Backlist Love! Which makes me REALLY happy! Below, you’ll have links to all the backlist features I’m aware of, the blogger/bloggers hosting and a small paragraph, describing what the feature is. Enjoy!

~*~*~*~

BulletPoint Forgotten Fridays is hosted by Kara and Lyn at Great Imaginations! Forgotten Fridays highlights books that are over a year old. Kara and Lyn pick a book, read it and then discuss it.

BulletPoint Book Avengers is hosted by Kristina from Gone Pecan and Sarah from What Sarah Read. Their tagline? “A Mission to Save Your Backlist.” Sounds epic right?!? The way it works: Kristina and Sarah read one backlist book per month and each post a review for that book on the third Monday of each month.

BulletPoint The Backlist Books Reading Challenge is hosted by Bekka and Alexia at Pretty Deadly Reviews. This is a reading challenge that encourages you to read backlist books that were published at least a year ago. In addition to reading these books, the challenge encourages you to review the books you read. You can then enter to win giveaways!

BulletPoint On My Shelf is hosted by Teresa at Readers Live a Thousand Lives. With this feature, Teresa picks a random backlist title that’s on her TBR and highlights it, explaining why she wants to read it and asking others if they’ve read it, etc. The goal is to help her decide which books need to be bumped up her TBR while potentially introducing these backlist titles to new readers.

BulletPoint Flashback Reading is hosted by Julie and Lanna at Bloggers Heart Books. Not only does this feature highlight backlist books, but each post also includes a fun author interview and/or guest post from the author of the highlighted title! The feature focuses mainly on pre-2015 releases.

BulletPoint Rummaging Through the Archives is hosted by Kristen at The Blissful Bookworm. With this backlist feature, Kristen reads and reviews backlist titles!

BulletPointReading Rewind is hosted by Stacee at Adventures of a Book Junkie and Katie at Shelfishly Addicted. With the Reading Rewind, Stacee and Katie will each pick one “old favorite” book per month (sometimes the same book, sometimes not) that they loved when they originally read it. They’ll re-read that book and answer some questions regarding when they first read it and how they feel about it now.

~*~*~*~

So there you have it! There are SO MANY AMAZING backlist features this year! I hope you found this roundup helpful! I don’t know if your wallets will agree…

Bloggers! If I featured you above, please let me know if any of your info is incorrect or if I did a horrible job explaining your feature and you want it re-worded!!

ALSO… If you’re a blogger and you’re hosting some kind of backlist feature and wish to be added to the above roundup, please leave a link to your feature in the comments!

Once Upon a Time: An Introduction

Once Upon a Time Image Main
Hey, guys! I’m BEYOND excited to FINALLY be introducing my new feature to you! I’ve been teasing this “super secret new feature” since November – and I meant to introduce it at the beginning of January. But things got hectic, so here we are!

Essentially, Once Upon a Time is a backlist feature. But more than that, it’s a way for me to discuss the ways in which I first started reading certain authors and books and to introduce those authors/books to new readers. For example, Meg Cabot is well known for her Princess Diaries series. But I first discovered her books when I was roughly 15, when I found Shadowland (The Mediator series, book one) in a used bookstore I frequented – But more on that another day (in the not-so-distant future, actually… *Cryptic comment is cryptic*).

Through this feature, I’ll not only be able to bring light to lesser-known books by well-known authors – as well as lesser-known books and lesser-known authors in general – but I’ll also be able to chat with you guys about what I like to read and how my reading has evolved over the years (hint: it actually hasn’t changed that much…). There were certain books/authors that I read when I was younger that still resonate with me. They’re still, to this day, some of my favorites. If I had more time to re-read, they’re the books that I would be re-reading. They’re comforting and familiar. Reading them is like going home after being away for a very long time.

So, every month, I’ll be featuring a new author. Sometimes, I’ll be focusing on the author in general and sometimes I’ll be focusing on a particular book or series they wrote. I’ll discuss with you, to the best of my memory, how I first discovered that author and why I love their book(s) – why that author or those books effected me and became so near and dear to me. My hope is that I can introduce readers to what I consider beloved books by amazing authors who deserve more attention and more love.

In between featuring epic authors and book, I’ll also be throwing in some other fun things, like a Then and Now feature (more on that later!), a bookshelf tour, a listing of all the current 2016 Backlist Challenges and Features (because there are a LOT of awesome bloggers hosting Backlist things this year!) and giveaways!

To be clear, this isn’t a reading challenge (unless you want to make it one). I’d love to be able to re-read all the books I feature, but time constraints make that impossible. Where I’m able to re-read, I will. And I encourage you to read or re-read with me, but it’s not required.

I also encourage you to post your own “Once Upon a Time” stories! Feel free to use the image posted above (please just credit me and link back to my blog). This is a great way for us to get to know each other and the stories behind our beloved authors and books – basically, why we love books and why we chose to become dedicated readers, bloggers, book pushers, etc.

So.. There you have it! I’m not the best at “introductions,” so I hope this all made sense! I’ll be posting the first featured author very soon and, hopefully, seeing this feature in action will make things more clear! I hope you guys enjoy “Once Upon a Time” – and I hope your TBR’s enjoy it, too!

For fans of Holly Black and Nova Ren Suma, a gripping, hauntingly atmospheric novel about murder, revenge, and a world where monsters—human and otherwise—lurk at the fringes.

When seventeen-year-old Breezy Lin wakes up in a shallow grave one year after her death, she doesn’t remember who killed her or why. All she knows is that she’s somehow conscious—and not only that, she’s able to sense who around her is hiding a murderous past. In life, Breezy was always drawn to the elegance of the universe and the mystery of the stars. Now she must set out to find answers and discover what is to become of her in the gritty, dangerous world to which she now belongs—where killers hide in plain sight and a sinister cult is hunting for strange creatures like her. What she finds is at once empowering, redemptive, and dangerous.

Tense, complex, and wholly engaging, Shallow Graves is a stunning first novel from Kali Wallace.

I’ve been excited for this book since I first heard about it. The title and synopsis were really intriguing and the cover was gorgeous! I loved the world, the characters and Kali Wallace’s writing. Though some parts left me feeling a bit confused and the ending lacked closure, this book was a fast, interesting read.

I really liked Breezy. She always seemed to be right on the edge of everything (feelings, attitudes, etc). She was confident and fierce, but she had moments where she realized she needed answers and sought help. She was fine being on her own, but she also realized how much she missed human companionship. She could hold her own, though, and I loved that. I loved how unapologetic she was. I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t see more about her life before death. In the beginning, the flashbacks/backstory were a bit confusing because they happened with little warning and I couldn’t always tell if Breezy was describing the past or present. But as I read more and got used to the writing style, it became easier to tell these things apart.

Rain was an epic character – one of my favorites! I loved how blunt and in-your-face she was. I would seriously love to see a companion novel with Rain. I loved what little backstory we learned for her and I’d love to delve more into her past and “what” she is. Another character I loved was Zeke. He was hilarious, sarcastic and a great friend (though that may be the wrong word) to Breezy. I wanted to like Violet, but I’m still on the fence with her and which side she was on. I really think it could have gone either way, honestly. And don’t even get me started on Mr. Willow..

Roughly 75% into the book, things got a bit.. odd. The tone of the book changed and the direction it was going seemed to shift drastically. I was a bit disappointed with one of the resolutions that occurred around this part of the book. The ending definitely brought me down, as well. There were a lot of unanswered questions. I just wanted more – more explanations, more closure. I was also a bit confused with some of the things that happened during this part of the book. I feel like I need to re-read the whole book and, after a second time, it will make more sense.

Overall, this was a really fun, creepy, intriguing book. I really liked the plot and the characters, but I really wanted more backstory and explanations that were slightly less confusing! I would recommend this book to those who love creepy/intriguing reads.

10:00 a.m.
The principal of Opportunity, Alabama's high school finishes her speech, welcoming the entire student body to a new semester and encouraging them to excel and achieve.

10:02 a.m.
The students get up to leave the auditorium for their next class.

The auditorium doors won't open.

Someone starts shooting.

Told over the span of 54 harrowing minutes from four different perspectives, terror reigns as one student's calculated revenge turns into the ultimate game of survival.

This book was haunting, chilling, riveting and realistic. It absolutely gutted me. My heart hurts for these characters, for the fact that this happens all the time in our world now. It feels really weird to say that this book was amazing, fantastic and epic because of the subject matter. But.. Nijkamp just did such an amazing job. Her writing – and the format of the book – really pulled the reader in, setting the tone and pace very early on. This is a book that will definitely stay with me for a long, long time.

Usually, I write about the characters of a book in great detail, because I’m an incredibly character driven reader. But it’s hard to talk about these characters in detail without spoilers. And it’s difficult to put into words how I felt about them – who I liked and didn’t like, who I sympathized with, who I feared for – because, really, I tried not to get too close to the characters. Logically, going into this book, you know you shouldn’t become too attached to them because you don’t know who will and won’t survive. But it’s really difficult to remain indifferent while reading a story such as this. You have to uncaringly care – which, I know, that’s the biggest contradiction ever. But… Just read the book, you’ll see what I mean…

That being said, I really found myself riveted by Sylv and Autumn. Their stories – the things they went through in this book – were the stories I wanted to see/hear/experience the most. For reasons. But.. spoilers.. So… Moving on…

There wasn’t a single moment in this book where my heart wasn’t pounding, where I didn’t feel tense and anxious, desperate to see how things would end, who would survive, who wouldn’t. And the fact that they were locked in the auditorium, with nowhere to run or hide, truly added to the urgency and horror. But the ending was, by far, the most intense part of this book. And that’s saying a lot, because every single part of this book was intense. But the ending took things to another level. My hands were actually shaking as I held my iPad, as I swiped to the next page and the next. I was blinking back tears, screaming in protest, begging the characters to stay safe. I was mentally and emotionally drained after finishing it.

I think the thing about this book that really hit home, though, was the social media aspect. It was incredibly heartbreaking and chilling. It was also very realistic, something we’ve actually seen happen during real life tragedies. Especially the news outlet aspect (I don’t want to describe this in detail, but it’ll make more sense if/when you read the book).

This was not an easy book to read. I imagine it wasn’t easy for Nijkamp to write, either. I absolutely recommend this book – I think it’s very important and relevant for today’s audience. But I also beg you to read with caution. Some scenes are vivid and graphic, some may be emotionally traumatizing. I would definitely say there are several trigger warnings that need to be tagged on to this book – obviously, the school shooting and violence/death aspect trigger warning. Sadly, I can’t go into detail on some of the other trigger warnings because they’re actually pretty spoilerish. But know that they are there and prepare yourself for them. I’ll vaguely tell you that bullying, rape and abuse are mentioned, as is loss of a parent (both via sickness and via death).

There are so many more things I could say about this book, but I think I’ll leave it be. You’ll either read this book and discover them for yourself, in which case, I don’t want to spoil you too much. Or you’ll find you’re not able to read the book and, in that case, probablely don’t want to hear further details about it.

Needless to say, this book was… Whoa.

Fans of The Royal We will not want to miss this epic love story!

Every decade, the world’s monarchs and their heirs secretly convene to discuss global politics and social issues—and arrange marriages between kingdoms.

Elsa may be the Hereditary Princess of Vattenguldia, but she finds the entire situation archaic and unsavory. While she wants what's best for her country, she isn't about to jump into an unwanted relationship—let alone a marriage—with a virtual stranger. Of course, her feelings matter little to her parents, whose wheeling and dealings over trade pacts and alliances achieved at her expense begin the moment they set foot in California for the Summit. So when a blindingly handsome royal runs into her, she doesn't hesitate to tell him there's no way she's marrying him.

Christian is all too happy to agree: no marriage. As the Hereditary Grand Duke of Aiboland, his main goal is to get through the summit without a bride being foisted on him. Which is why he suggests they help each other field potential intendeds. As Christian slowly gets to know Elsa, though, he realizes they have a lot more in common than just their feelings about the Royal Marriage Market. Only he can't fall for her, because royal or not, they're not meant for each other.

Elsa and Christian will have to evaluate matters of the heart verses those of state and crown, and decide whether or not tradition trumps love.

This is my tenth Heather Lyons book and I don’t even know what to say anymore. She’s epic, her books are epic, read her books!!! *Drops mic. Walks away.*

Oh, you actually want to know more about this book? Oh.. I thought the above covered it? No? Okay…

Royal Marriage Market was epic and amazing. Every time I read one of Heather’s books, I swoon and flail and call it my favorite. But then she writes another book and I swoon and flail all over again. Really, I don’t think I could pick a favorite Heather Lyons book because they’re all amazing. However, Royal Marriage Market is DEFINITELY up there near the top! I loved the characters, the plot, the resolution and the ending! So.. everything. I loved everything about this book!

I adored Elsa! She was incredibly spunky and fierce, torn between loving her people and wanting love for herself. She knew how to pick her battles – when to speak her mind versus when to stay silent and let the chips fall where they may. She actually reminded me a lot of Alice from The Collectors’ Society, another Heathery Lyons book!

Christian was an awesome character. He, like Elsa, understood his duty to his throne and his people, but he also wanted to live his life as he wished. He knew how to be a gentlemen, but he was also stubborn and a bit outspoken – as was Elsa. Their banter was hilariously epic! I shipped them pretty much right from the beginning! They were just absolutely perfect for each other! For almost the entire book, I was either cackling in amusement or doing a *head desk* at the things they said and did. They also had some super hot, steamy scenes… *Fans self!!!*

I adored the secondary characters in this book, as well. Heather really knows how to write amazing characters! I loved Charlotte and Parker – their relationships with Elsa and Christian (respectively), their loyalty, the integral roles they played near the end – they were just epic. Christian’s brother, Lukas, was the consummate playboy, but the friendship and understanding between him and Christian was epic. They were able to commiserate together, but they were also willing to “sacrifice” (in a completely comical way) each other if it meant escaping the clutches of their evil, heinous mother. Lukas spoke his mind, without any care as to who heard or what others thought. I would LOVE to see a spin-off with him! As for Elsa’s sister, Isabelle, I didn’t really have an opinion of her until the end. Then I adored her and how much she truly loved her sister. Without her – and the things she did to ensure they both had a happily ever after – things would not have ended the way they did.

There are a ton of other characters I should probably talk about, but that’ll take forever. So, to make a long story short, these characters are EPIC! Okay? Okay!

Basically, in my mind, this book is The Swan Princess meets Romeo & Juliet meets The Royal We (though, I must confess, I haven’t read The Royal We, but from what I’ve heard, the comparison fits!). The only reason I mention The Swan Princess is because, for a good chunk of the beginning of the book, the song “This Is My Idea” was stuck in my head! In fact, I’m listening to it now as I review.. ^_^

But yeah.. Just the way Elsa and Christian were so dead-set against the Summit and what it meant and the way they clashed in the beginning – it all seriously reminded me of The Swan Princess!

Bunny ears

Plus, the way they fought against their parents – and their parents’ desire to marry them off to strangers for political gain, rather than love.

Fighting parents

And then that ending!!!! The ending was incredibly complex, twisted and epic. Seeing all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place? Perfection. It was a little open-ended, but in a completely satisfying way. It felt realistic and I’m REALLY hoping for a sequel with Elsa and Christian or – as I mentioned above – a spin-off with Lukas!

Kissing

So, as usual, I HIGHLY recommend this book, plus every book Heather Lyons has ever written! If you love books about royalty, hate-to-love relationships and open-ended, semi-HEA’s, you’ll LOVE this book!!!

“The Urban Boys: Discovery of the Five Senses” is both a rollicking ride filled with mystery, suspense and literary drama; as well as a sensitive portrayal of individuals and families called by an unknown force to fight evil. It grips the imagination and engages the senses from the very first words of the Prologue through the whole frenetically evolving story. It’s an amazing work for a new fiction writer and one that will keep the book in your hands as you relax, ride in airplanes or stop for coffee. I couldn’t put it down; and felt I was wasting time whenever I wasn’t going from one colorful chapter to another. It’s a great ride and highly recommended! Chapter Fourteen

Out at Night

A BLANKET OF DEEP CHARCOAL MOVED ABOUT LIKE A SPRAWLING, SMOGGY MASS high above Sandry Lake bringing with it gloom and despair for all to see. As a town that had fallen into a desperate state of disrepair, it was still amazingly contained, and unfortunately not as far from Danville Heights as one would prefer. The approximate eight mile span between the two towns was actually very close.

Sandry Lake was contained in the sense that it now had as few citizens as when it was first established, considering that most of its residents had abandoned ship in the name of self-preservation and fear of evil. Its small police force and body of elected officials had all but disappeared. Crime and corruption expressed itself in dark and evil ways.

Coming up from beneath the shadows in unexpected moments of terror, something or someone had assumed control of the entire town and twisted the meaning of what it was to be a community. There were two factions at hand: the last of the committed citizens who would hang-on to the end, and a cruel, dark, malicious force. Fighting what they largely could not see made for a very unpleasant battle, but these faithful citizens were not giving up. Their hearts were embedded in memories of better times when Sandry Lake served as a model community within the region. The citizens had used their very own hands to build the city, and to have what was rightfully theirs stolen from them was an atrocity none could fathom. The problem was that their manpower had waned. So what began as a counterattack became a waiting game, and they struggled to survive.

Living in squalid, makeshift quarters, a dirty band of goons who were all given free range as connivers, thieves, and thugs, roamed around at all hours looking for whatever they wanted to steal. If they encountered a citizen, they simply took what they wanted and beat them to the ground. The goons had been uncaged and even a trace of any rule had simply vanished into thin air.

He orchestrated their moves, lavishing upon them promises of riches and power if they would only align with his grand scheme. By dispensing such promises to the lost, his following had amassed, and they were ready to strike at any given time.

The goons referred to him as “he,” likely not even knowing his name. In fact, the mind washing was so elaborate that they had even forgotten their own names. So far away from the truth were their lives that it would be impossible to salvage any one of them. Intent to rule, this boisterous atrocity displayed itself as the lowest band of hooligans on a totem pole built entirely out of filth and lies. Unlikely to have been an overnight foray, he obviously had been present for some time. He often dreamed of his long-range plans to dominate this once beautiful and established town.

As a loud altercation between a citizen and a wild ruffian unfolded in the background, the depth of a shadow revealed a nasty episode in an otherwise unfortunate, yet common day. With its desperate hunger aired out in the open, a meandering chicken ruffled its brown and green feathers. It walked and pecked for any scrap that would kindly spare itself.

In a place unfriendly to a lonely bird, it would take mountains of hope for a meal to be realized. Unfortunately, he had the same on his mind and wildly snatched the chicken, which sent feathers flying up and about. And with a quick snap of its neck, he brought it all to an end. Void of hesitation, he bit into the chicken spitting out blood and feathers in a most expressionless manner. In his mind, dinner was what it was, and if another bird approached, it would most certainly meet the same fate. Chewing and grinding away, his eyes glazed over, he cared less how this came to be and continued to spit in all directions while wiping his bloody chin with his filthy rags.

Like a fallen angel, he wanted power. He worked for evil and fought against good. Only he could orchestrate the details of these crimes so expertly executed as a way to run folks out so he could command the stage. Tall, slender, and disheveled looking, he’d been surviving in the depths for quite some time. The comfort associated with his brand of chaos led him to the loneliest of places, and there he reveled.

Not understanding his own emotional insecurities, he chose evil as a basis from which to operate. He had settled into a routine of madness, which was now in the director’s chair of Sandry Lake.

And from where did this emerge?

As his eyes revealed a sliver of perceived childhood trauma, feeling lonely and unloved, second and not first, feeling left out perhaps, his internal emptiness spilled over, and he hung his head momentarily. Once happy, he somehow became willing to trade his hand for the dark side, surely to gain attention and a sense of power that would fill an enormous void. Perceived or imagined, his hurt was real. But it would not slow him down on his journey to destruction.

Compared to Sandry Lake, nightfall in Danville Heights had quite the opposite effect. Children’s eyes fluttered as they winked themselves to sleep, quieted down, and settled-in for the night. For these were the common routines of the peaceful valley.

There was only one thing aside its normal during this particular twilight: five boys lay wide awake sensing each other. They responded to instincts that they did not question, but also did not understand. The day had been long and rest would normally be embraced, but this evening had a tale to be told.

Jordan found himself ruffling through his black sweat clothes, and he got dressed, opened his window, and jumped outside. Every single one of the boys followed suit, all dressed in black athletic gear, and three in hoodies. They briskly walked toward the preserve deep into the night. They were transfixed on the north and not speaking to each other, but occasionally traded glances as their respective senses burned away.

By way of mystery, the incident with the floating light balls had caused a hypersensitive reaction with their senses, and Jordan could literally hear the altercation between the citizen and the goon unfolding. Alex licked his lips, his tongue protruded, and then it went back in and out again. Kinsu’s vision sharpened like a razor’s edge, and he led the way. And as they picked up the pace, they gained incredible speed. From calm to chaotic, their worlds would change in a flash.

As if to run off to save our very own lives, the boys charged ahead and never looked back, although uncertain of the path they were on. Enveloped by the night, they felt strangely at home moving into dark shadows. They felt a certain power as allies on this journey, which was now quite a ways from home.

The boys’ actions brought an anticipated interruption to the Dark Stranger who was resting, knowing fully that this day would come. Aware of the infancy of the situation, he quickly sprung to his feet, but decided to use reservation in measuring the boys. He could sense them, feel them, even being able to see them running toward Sandry Lake.

He shared similar instincts and sensations to the boys, but these connections had yet to be made. Sensing their urgency, he followed them to this dark place, his black hood wrapped tightly while his cape-like covering embraced the wind and advanced his commanding presence.

Akin to an alarm clock from hell, these new, powerful instincts coupled with nightfall would prove to be bolder than ever in the history of Danville Heights. The boys could have ignored this calling, fought its beckon, but this would prove to be out of alignment with fate. As they tore into Sandry Lake, whipped air encircled a crooked, dangling sign that ironically read: Welcome to Sandry Lake. It swung left to right in a squeaky and unwelcoming manner.

They stopped in their tracks taking view of this evil domain, which loomed large above them. Underfoot, filthy trash served as their greeter, while broken glass and coarse rubble served as their guide. Moving forward slowly, they surveyed the area leading to the altercation. Rhee could smell the goon while pinpointing his exact location.

Filthy or not, Chase stooped down and put his hands on the ground to feel for human vibrations that may have been surrounding them. Kinsu remained laser focused on his target, leading the way with Jordan next to him taking in every harsh word spit out by the goon, who then slapped the citizen causing him to crash to the ground. He grabbed at the citizen’s back pocket, ripping his pants in an effort to steal his wallet because he had refused to hand it over. With his makeshift weapon knocked away, the citizen had become defenseless. He flipped over on his back to use his legs as a last, self-protective resort.

Now upon the scene, Alex rushed toward the goon, and out of nowhere, handled him with finesse in a style of martial arts for which he had never been trained. Every single one of the boys had the same skill. Coupled with their newfound instincts, they made for serious human weapons against which the thug could not prevail.

Taking him down was one thing, but when three more came out of the shadows armed with sharp, spiked weapons, the brewing battle took a turn. The boys quickly and strategically synchronized to whip and outsmart these thuggish creatures. A furious fight ensued with two-on-one, one-on-one, one-on-three, and all in between. The boys realized they were pitted against a vicious band of cruelty accustomed to roaming in dark places and causing mayhem at will.

Mean and muscular, the goons fought back with precision, punching and slapping into eternity. But the boys’ sudden martial arts mastery was unleashed upon these dreadful hooligans, and their detailed, accurate moves dazzled in the twilight.

“Two more, left,” said Chase as two more thugs joined the fracas. Their uninvited presence agitated the boys.

With the Dark Stranger witnessing it all, he allowed the boys to handle themselves, and he remained reserved. The night wind moved in and out of his black hood and framed his handsome face and his long hair.

Spinning, punching, kicking, and calculating every move, the boys ripped into the thugs with fury knocking each one unconscious, sprawled out for all to see. Like a mound of sorry, soggy laundry, the goons were piled high and left for their maker, whoever that might be hiding in the shadows.

And with the same laser sharp vision afforded to Kinsu, he saw what happened and could not believe his eyes. Members of his own army defeated, representative of weakness and a pathetic emptiness? He stood up boldly with the dead chicken dangling in his hand, blood dripping to the ground, realizing he had no conceivable idea of who these boys were. Their prowess struck him, for he knew he would need to assemble quickly in order to defend his perch.

With that blanket of deep charcoal hanging over his head, he could do nothing besides keep his feet planted right where they were. Somehow, he too could sense them, and he knew he would need to go deep in order to prevail. But the night sky offered zero comfort to anyone involved, and a new chapter had emerged. But how it would unfold remained as cloaked in darkness as he himself.

2015 End of Year Book Survey

2015-end-of-year-book-survey

Wow, 2015 seriously FLEW by. It was a really stressful year and I’m actually glad it’s coming to an end. I know the beginning of 2016 is going to be pretty bumpy, too, but I’m still hopeful it’ll be better than 2015 was!

Anyway! I did the 2013 End of Year Book Survey, but missed the 2014 survey (the last few months of 2014 were just as stressful as 2015, if not more so!), so I’m really excited to be participating this year! Even though 2015 was rough on my personal life, I still read some amazing books and experienced some epic bookish things!

This survey is hosted by the lovely Jamie @ The Perpetual Page Turner. All questions and images belong to her! Thanks, Jamie!!

So, here we go!

1 2015 reading stats

Number Of Books You Read: 76 (But, before today is out, it might end up being 77!)
Number of Re-Reads: 2
Genre You Read The Most From: Dystopian and Sci-Fi, mostly!

2 Best in Books

1. Best Book You Read In 2015? This is REALLY tough! I’m going to have to cheat and pick a few! So, in no particular order: Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone, Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas, The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and Hotel Ruby by Suzanne Young!

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t? Winter by Marissa Meyer. I LOVED this series, but I had some issues with Winter, which you can read about in my review. But actually, there were a few I thought I was going to love and didn’t. I won’t list them all, but I’m definitely a Sad Panda over that :(

3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read? Surprising in a Bad Way: Ice Like Fire by Sara Raasch. I really enjoyed Snow Like Ashes, but then I DNF’d Ice Like Fire. It was.. I was really disappointed :( Surprising in a Good Way: Becoming Jinn by Lori Goldstein. I’d heard some very meh things about this one, so I was nervous to read it, especially since I’m on friendly terms with the author. But I ended up LOVING it!! I’m VERY excited for the sequel!

9. Book You Read In 2015 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year? I don’t do much re-reading, but I’d say Ten Thousand Skies Above You by Claudia Gray, so it’s fresh in my mind when I read the third and final book in the trilogy!

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)? Ensnared by A.G. Howard. I LOVED Splintered and Unhinged. But Ensnared really fell flat and that made me angry because it’s such a great series and it could have been amazing!
