Spotlight Post: The Suffering Tree by Elle Cosimano (Excerpt)

Hey everyone! Today, I have an awesome excerpt to share with you from Elle Cosimano’s The Suffering Tree (June 13, 2017 – Disney-Hyperion). I’m really excited to share this excerpt with you because this book looks AMAZING! First, here’s more about the book:

“It’s dark magic brings him back.”

Tori Burns and her family left D.C. for claustrophobic Chaptico, Maryland, after suddenly inheriting a house under mysterious circumstances. That inheritance puts her at odds with the entire town, especially Jesse Slaughter and his family—it’s their generations-old land the Burns have “stolen.” But none of that seems to matter after Tori witnesses a young man claw his way out of a grave under the gnarled oak in her new backyard.

Nathaniel Bishop may not understand what brought him back, but it’s clear to Tori that he hates the Slaughters for what they did to him centuries ago. Wary yet drawn to him by a shared sense of loss, she gives him shelter. But in the wake of his arrival comes a string of troubling events—including the disappearance of Jesse Slaughter’s cousin—that seem to point back to Nathaniel.

As Tori digs for the truth—and slowly begins to fall for Nathaniel—she uncovers something much darker in the tangled branches of the Slaughter family tree. In order to break the centuries-old curse that binds Nathaniel there and discover the true nature of her inheritance, Tori must unravel the Slaughter family’s oldest and most guarded secrets. But the Slaughters want to keep them buried… at any cost.

From award-winning author Elle Cosimano comes a haunting, atmospheric thriller perfect to hand to readers of the Mara Dyer trilogy and Bone Gap.

And now for the excerpt! Enjoy!

“I always knew he’d come back.” The woman’s brittle voice carried through the air.

Tori turned, shielding her eyes from the afternoon sun, uncertain who the woman was speaking to. Matilda Rice stood bowed in the shade of her porch, her cataract eyes watching Tori. She must have seen Tori reading the flyer.

“Did they find him?” Tori called to her.

“That boy, he wasn’t supposed to die like that.”

A cold weight settled in Tori’s chest. “What?”

The old woman’s gap-toothed grin melted into a thin line. She looked hard at Tori. “Emmeline always said that boy would come back. He’s got business here. Old business. You mind yourself ’round that Bishop boy. It’s dark magic brings him back.”

The hair on the back of Tori’s neck prickled as the woman’s bent frame disappeared into the house.

Waiting on Wednesday #15: Words on Bathroom Walls by Julia Walton

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine. Its purpose is to highlight upcoming releases we’re dying to get our hands on.

~*~*~

I haven’t done a Waiting on Wednesday post in forever, but Words on Bathroom Walls (July 4, 2017 – Random House Books for Young Readers) sounds intense and epic, so I wanted to share it with you. If it’s not on your TBR already, it should be!

Fans of More Happy Than Not, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and It’s Kind of a Funny Story will cheer for Adam as he struggles with schizophrenia in this brilliantly honest and unexpectedly funny debut.

Adam has just been diagnosed with schizophrenia. He sees and hears people who aren’t there: Rebecca, a beautiful girl who understands him; the Mob Boss, who harasses him; and Jason, the naked guy who’s unfailingly polite. It should be easy to separate the real from the not real, but Adam can’t.

Still, there’s hope. As Adam starts fresh at a new school, he begins a drug trial that helps him ignore his visions. Suddenly everything seems possible, even love. When he meets Maya, a fiercely intelligent girl, he desperately wants to be the great guy that she thinks he is. But then the miracle drug begins to fail, and Adam will do anything to keep Maya from discovering his secret.

On Meredith’s Mind #7: Happy 20th Birthday, Harry Potter!!!!!!!

Harry Potter turns 20 today! Well, the books do at least.

(Side Note: I find it completely hilarious that this is my 7th On Meredith’s Mind post, given how significant that number is in HP. It feels very appropriate for such a huge birthday).

It’s incredibly strange to think that I almost wasn’t a part of this incredible world and fandom. But believe it or not, I didn’t like Harry Potter when it first came out. It wasn’t until 6th grade when my teacher decided to read the books to our class during snack time that I really started to get into them. At first, I would sit at my own desk, reading whatever book I had brought with me that day. But before I knew it, I was hooked. In the end, I was the first person over to the reading carpet each day. I even bought my own copies of the books and read along with – and sometimes ahead of – the teacher (Check out my Harry Potter Confessions to read the full story and more).

Earlier this year, that teacher passed away and the news stunned me. This loss broke my heart, more than I ever imagined it could. Because without her, I wouldn’t be the gigantic Potterhead that I am today and… I can’t even begin to imagine what my life would be like without these books. Hogwarts is my home. These books shaped me as a reader and made me the person I am today. I learned so much from Harry and his friends, and life would be empty without them.

I’ve read these books so many times, most people don’t believe me when I tell them. But I kid you not: I’ve read Sorcerer’s Stone 32+ times, Chamber of Secret’s 36+ times, Prisoner of Azkaban 30+ times, Goblet of Fire 26+ times, Order of the Phoenix 16+ times, Half Blood Prince 4 times, and The Deathly Hallows 3 times.

Yeah… I read Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secret’s so many times, especially, that I broke the spines and had to buy new books, bahahaha *Coughs.* And I’ll likely have to replace Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire soon, as well. I re-read Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secret’s so many times because.. well… I loved them! Of the first four books (and at that point in time), they were my favorites. So I re-read them CONSTANTLY. I would re-read every book with every new book release and every new movie release, and sometimes I just did random series re-reads – anytime I was sad or lonely or just bored.

I actually did a re-read in December 2016/January 2017 – my first full series re-read since 2009 and it was SO strange because, between 2000-2009, I read at least one (usually more) Harry Potter book per year. And then all of a sudden in 2009, I transferred from community college to a 4-year school and life just got insane and hectic and I didn’t have time to do a re-read. So I went NINE WHOLE YEARS without reading a Harry Potter book. And life felt empty. 2009-2016 were terrible years for my family and I was without my Hogwarts Family through it all. These books are my comfort, yet I couldn’t read them during a time in my life when I needed comfort more than ever. I don’t know why I didn’t find the time to read them… I think I was just too exhausted and absorbed in life.

But when I finally did my 2016-17 re-read, man was it epic! I hadn’t read them in so long, yet had seen the movies so many times, I had forgotten certain things. So reading them after nine years was almost like reading them for the first time again – and boy, did that bring on nostalgic feels!

I can remember going to midnight release parties for Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows, and reading them the minute I got home, not stopping until I’d reached the end. I can remember the excitement when the movies were picked up. I remember the long wait for Order of the Phoenix and the chilling anticipation of Half-Blood Prince, where we were told a very important character would be killed off. I remember the controversy over Deathly Hallows and the debate of whether or not Harry would die at the end, and how that would effect young kids who still didn’t fully understand the concept of death.

I literally grew up with these books and I wouldn’t trade that for anything. They will forever be a part of me and I’ll always hold them near and dear to my heart.

Yes, I went there.

Pinocchio can’t believe the Moonlit Court is his home! With royal banquets, a regal wardrobe, and a whole new set of rules, Pinocchio has a lot to adjust to in his new life as prester alongside Princess Lazuli.

Their journey requires intelligence, strength, and a dash of the magic only presters control. But when Pinocchio tries to use his powers, they have an unintended effect: he is turning back into a wooden automa. And if he’s not careful, he may lose his human form forever.

And now here’s the excerpt!

“No.” I stop walking. My hands go to my chest and I press them there, flat.

Zoe turns. “Are you okay?”

I nod, but my voice cracks, betraying me. “Is it Devon?”

Devon, my second-best friend since we were sophomores, which feels like forever and ever ago instead of eighteen months. Or first-best friend now, I guess, with Ariel gone. Devon disappeared two days ago, but everyone, even her teachers, thought she hitchhiked into the city to go dancing or see a concert. It wouldn’t be the first time, or even the fifth time. We were never worried—just pissed she didn’t invite us.

Zoe hesitates. “I don’t know,” she says carefully. “I just heard that the cops were here. They found . . . something.”

She pushes through the trees. I walk slower, aware of the wet on the leaves beneath my feet, the wind on the back of my neck. I hear Ariel’s voice in my ear, but it’s a memory of a voice, not a real one.

Why are you so surprised?

The trees open onto a clearing. Police tape weaves between the branches, a shocking spot of fluorescent in the middle of all the black and gray and brown. I see faces, but most of the girls don’t creep close enough to be recognized. Dean Rosenthal kneels in the dirt, and her assistant, Mr. Coolidge, stands behind her. He has one hand pressed to his mouth. The emotion on his face is raw in a way that makes me blush and avert my eyes. I feel like I’ve just seen him in his underwear.

Their bodies form a barricade, blocking my view of what they’re staring at. I hesitate behind Zoe, but just for a moment.

“Charlotte,” Zoe says, but I’m already moving closer, ducking below the police tape. She grabs my wrist, her tiny hand surprisingly strong. I shake her off. An arm lies across the leaves. Brown skin and long, tapered fingers with bright red nails. The last time I saw those hands, they were wrapped around a tumbler of whiskey in her daddy’s office.

Now Devon holds a syringe. Her knees are bent, like she’d crumpled to the ground after it happened.

Doesn’t she look perfect? I imagine Ariel saying. I nod, because wouldn’t it be just like Ariel to say something so horrible? But she’s right. There are no marks on Devon’s body. No blood.

“Like she’s sleeping,” I whisper. I close my eyes and wrap my arms around my chest. Devon isn’t lying here in the dirt. Devon is dancing at a party in the city. Devon is drinking martinis and flirting with a thirty-year-old businessman who hasn’t guessed yet that she’s only eighteen. Devon is wearing a ridiculous dress that shows off too much skin and that she bought with her mother’s stolen credit card. She’s not here.
