No longer in high school, Chloe Lilywhite is now living and working in Annar, the Magicals’ city-state plane of existence. Since moving, she’s joined the Council, gone on missions with the Guard, moved into her own apartment, and enrolled at the University of Annar. Plus, she’s happily engaged to be married to Jonah Whitecomb, the literal man from her dreams, not to mention her Connection. While she still struggles with aspects of her craft, Chloe feels like she’s finally coming into her own, especially after a difficult year that had her questioning nearly everything in her life.

After a brutal attack by the Elders, her life is turned upside down once more. Accusations fly throughout the Council and Guard, forcing Chloe to confront her worst fears about what’s she’s capable of as a Creator. And then there’s the matter of Kellan Whitecomb, Jonah’s twin brother and Chloe’s ex, who resurfaces after disappearing months before. Although Chloe chose Jonah, and despite their best efforts, the two find it hard to stay away from one another.

But no matter what Fate throws at her, Chloe is determined to take charge of her life, even as it begins to spiral out of control.

*This is a New Adult title, suitable for readers 18+.

A Matter of Heart by Heather Lyons was so, so amazing. Heather did a fabulous job with this sequel. Sometimes, the second book in a series isn’t as good as the first book; it just can’t live up to the hype of the first book. But that is ABSOLUTELY NOT the case with A Matter of Heart – it stands on its own and is an overall amazing read!

As with A Matter of Fate, this book sucks you in from the very first page and takes you on a wild ride. There’s an action scene almost immediately, followed by a scene that holds some incredible insight and has some great moments between Chloe and Kellan (Kellan! Swoons!)

I absolutely love Chloe. Honestly, I’m pretty sure she’s one of my favorite MC’s ever. Her destiny as a Creator carries so much weight and responsibility. Yes, she complains sometimes and she does go through some mini-meltdowns in this book, but she still holds her head high and tries to think of others before herself. We also get to see Drunk Chloe again, and let me tell you, she’s hilarious. It’s so wrong, but I love Drunk Chloe!

If you read my review for A Matter of Fate, then you know I’m 100% Team Kellan. So it’s no surprise when I say: Jonah makes me soooo mad! He’s so quick to assume the worst, and I hate his temper. He needs to trust Chloe already! I mean, I get why he doesn’t and I guess at certain times (I admit reluctantly) he would be an idiot to trust her, what with her and Kellan’s history, but still. It’s irrational, but it irritates me! I think part of the problem was that I was just sick of the fighting, in general. I know no relationship is perfect, but how can they be soulmates with THIS much fighting? Didn’t they learn their lesson in A Matter of Fate? Clearly not. But it’s okay, because I want Chloe and Kellan to end up together, so she and Jonah can fight all they want! *Grins.*

There’s a LOT of tension between Chloe and Kellan in A Matter of Heart, especially in the beginning. There’s a funny scene where they trade insults, and I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. And I even agreed with Kellan a few times!

I seriously love Callie. I know I said this in my review of A Matter of Fate, but it still holds true. I love her friendship with Chloe. She’s honest and blunt, and she tells it like it is, even when Chloe doesn’t want to hear it. Honestly, as far as friends go, I prefer Callie over Cora. There’s something about Cora that.. I can’t explain it. She’s a great character, but I just love Callie. Maybe it’s the WAY their friendship developed, but I feel like Chloe and Callie were MEANT to be friends. They just fit so well together.

The ending absolutely blew my mind. I didn’t see it coming, and I was shocked, to say the least. It was so sad, for everyone involved, and I’m really anxious to see how things are resolved in the third and final book, A Matter of Truth (out in November). Honestly, waiting for November is going to be so tough! I need to know what happens next! I need to see who she ends up with!

All in all, loved this book. I did get irritated with the characters – a lot – but in a good way, if that makes sense – I was so invested in this story line and these characters, I couldn’t help but yell at them when I thought they were being stupid, or cry with them when they were hurt and upset. It’s a great thing to read a book and be that invested in it – It means it’s well written and amazing. I hope that makes sense! And I highly, highly recommend this book, as well! You’ll swoon over Jonah and Kellan, trust me!

Like many, she’s heard of a mythical land simply called “the Blue.” They say it’s a paradise, where the sun still shines and the waters are turquoise. More importantly, it’s a place where Nat won’t be persecuted, even if her darkest secret comes to light.

But passage to the Blue is treacherous, if not impossible, and her only shot is to bet on a ragtag crew of mercenaries led by a cocky runner named Ryan Wesson to take her there. Waiting on Wednesday (#7): Unhinged by A.G. Howard

Hey everyone. Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine. Its purpose is to highlight upcoming releases we’re dying to get our hands on.

Unhinged

Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she’s always dreamed of.

That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.

As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.

If Alyssa stays in the human realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she’ll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.

I shouldn’t have to say anything at all regarding the reason why Unhinged is my WoW pick. The reason should be obvious: Morpheus!

I love Alice in Wonderland retellings and stories, as well as books that are set in the world of Alice in Wonderland – as is the case with the Splintered series. And Morpheus is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (x infinity) swoon-worthy! He is, without a doubt, my Ultimate Book Boyfriend and he’s ON THE COVER OF UNHINGED!!!!! I just absolutely can’t wait! January is WAY too far away!

You can pre-order Unhinged on Amazon by clicking here.

Chloe Lilywhite struggles with all the normal problems of a typical seventeen-year-old high school student. Only, Chloe isn't a normal teenage girl. She's a Magical, part of a secret race of beings who influence the universe. More importantly, she's a Creator, which means Fate mapped out her destiny long ago, from her college choice, to where she will live, to even her job. While her friends and relatives relish their future roles, Chloe resents the lack of say in her life, especially when she learns she's to be guarded against a vengeful group of beings bent on wiping out her kind. Their number one target? Chloe, of course.

That's nothing compared to the boy trouble she's gotten herself into. Because a guy she's literally dreamed of and loved her entire life, one she never knew truly existed, shows up in her math class, and with him comes a twin brother she finds herself inexplicably drawn to.

Chloe's once unyielding path now has a lot more choices than she ever thought possible.

A Matter of Fate by Heather Lyons was amazing – plain and simple. It was unique and original, the world-building was incredible and I loved Chloe’s voice and the tone of the story. I don’t think I can put it into words in a way that will make sense, but I just loved it.

The main character, Chloe, is a Magical. Magicals are the “cause of an event. The effect is what society and the people within choose to do with it once it’s begun.” Everything about being a Magical is set in stone, and Chloe just wants to be able to make her own choices.

Chloe’s relatable and likable. As a Creator – someone who can build up and destroy civilizations at will (or, as per the Council), she has many responsibilities. Creators are especially important to the Council because they are rare. As such, Chloe’s life is even more set in stone than most Magicals. She doesn’t like having her entire life mapped out for her, but she still manages to hold her head high.

Near the middle/end, Chloe really starts to get obnoxious and hypocritical. But oddly enough, this felt like it matched her personality. I don’t even know if that makes sense. She was whiny, hypocritical and ridiculous, but she had her reasons for it, so it didn’t annoy me as much as it normally would. I understood where she was coming from, and I understood why she had to whine and pout for awhile.

Early on in the book, we are introduced to Jonah and Kellan Whitecomb. In the beginning, Jonah comes off as a loner, keeping to himself and ignoring Chloe almost completely. It takes way too long for Chloe and Jonah to talk, honestly, and Jonah’s constant avoidance of Chloe gets frustrating. As the story progresses, we learn why he avoided her, but it’s still really upsetting. Don’t get me wrong, I liked Jonah well enough, but he wasn’t my favorite match for Chloe.

Kellan, though, is swoon-worthy almost from the minute he and Chloe start talking, and I instantly loved him and wanted Chloe to be with him. Some of my favorite Kellan moments? When he calls himself an attention whore, I laughed out loud! Also, when he used the term “Ankle Biters” he reminded me of Uncle Jessie from Full House. This definitely earned him some brownie points!

I loved Karl, so much. He was protective and fatherly, like a big brother for Chloe. He tried so hard to act tough, yet deep down, he was just such a softie. His guidance was exactly what Chloe needed. He was trustworthy, both to Chloe as a character and to myself as a reader. His protectiveness brought happy tears to my eyes.

Another character I loved is Astrid. As much as Karl is like a fatherly figure to Chloe, Astrid is like a motherly type to her. She’s kind, understanding and, above all else, honest. She doesn’t belittle Chloe, the way her parents do. She confirms so many things for Chloe, putting Chloe at ease – to a certain extent. It’s more than Chloe’s parent’s have ever done and, for that, I love Astrid.

Cora was a frustrating character. She was the stereotypical best friend, both there for Chloe and also completely oblivious. It was obvious from the beginning she was flirting with Raul; Chloe was so surprised when she finally found out, but I thought what was going on was crystal clear. Cora meddled too much, especially in things that were not her business and things that concerned Chloe, Kellan and Jonah. This, too, was frustrating. Yet, at one point, something happens and Cora lectures Chloe about it (well, it’s more like an all-out, explosive yelling match) – and even though her methods were wrong, I absolutely agreed with Cora!

Finally, I LOVED Callie. I know, I know – Jonah fans will hate me. Maybe? But Callie was great. She was funny and sarcastic, she spoke her mind, and I never saw her as a threat to anything or anyone. Honestly, since I want Chloe to end up with Kellan, I didn’t see Callie as a threat to anything at all.

The ending was explosive and amazing, and it set things up nicely for the second book. I can’t wait to see what happens next! I’m still rooting for Kellan, though!

Also, I just want it on record: I totally called the whole “voice in her head” thing! I can’t go into details, because it’s too spoilery. But it’s epic and I totally called it, right from the beginning!

Much like Vanished, The Rebel surprised me. It was better than I expected, though some parts left much to be desired.

I still can’t get over the physical appearances of the characters in the books versus the show. Every time Max is described with blonde hair and blue eyes, I just want to cringe. Also, my mind was messing with me – I would imagine Jason Behr (the actor who played Max) with blonde hair and blue eyes… And then I kept picturing Brendan Fehr (Michael) with black hair and Colin Hanks (Alex) with red hair. Needless to say, it was kind of strange picturing these actors I knew and loved as the characters, but not looking like themselves. It shouldn’t be a big deal – Actors and appearances change all the time in book-to-movie adaptions. But for some reason, it really threw me off.

The physical appearances aside, the thing that upsets me the most, still, is the differences between television Sheriff Valenti and Kyle versus book Sheriff Valenti and Kyle. I really want to cry whenever I read about them in the books. We learned to love these characters for three years on the show, and to see the different relationship in the books… I feel dramatic saying this, but it really broke my heart.

The Collective Conscious officially freaked me out in this book. There were moments when they just took Max over, even without his permission, and during really awkward, uncomfortable moments – especially for Liz. I don’t necessarily believe they are evil, but I don’t fully trust them, either.

Adam is such a useless character. At least, he feels that way to me. He is bland and doesn’t say or do much to warrant anything. I can see the places where his character was divided into the Tess storyline and the Isabel storyline for the show. And I can absolutely see why his character was not included in the television show. His crush on Liz is unsettling, as Liz was pretty much 100% focused on Max in the show, so to have her affections stray is just… I don’t like it. Same goes with Maria and the mysterious Trevor. Maria had such a puppy-dog crush on Michael, I can’t see her straying like that.

I didn’t like or trust Trevor from the very beginning. I even thought he might have been DuPris in disguise, at first. I didn’t like him threatening Alex – who is finally home, after roughly two weeks – and I didn’t like the way he so easily swayed Michael away from his group. Michael, in the show, does not easily trust. He’s suspicious of everyone. So why didn’t he question Trevor more? Why did he so easily accept what he said as truth? His desire for family is understandable, but to the point that he would let his guard down so fully? It just wasn’t believable.

The Rosa storyline was definitely unnecessary, and I can absolutely see why it didn’t make it to the television show. Liz needs to sneak around, sneak out, and lie so much in the show to help Max, Isabel and Michael. If she had been under the kind of scrutiny her parents – her father, especially – put her under in the books, she never would have gotten away with the things she did in the show. I also just can’t picture Liz with a sibling, just as I can’t picture Maria with a sibling – it was just too much to visualize, too many differences from the show.

The two main focuses in The Rebel are: Who is Trevor, and what does he want? And who kidnapped Kevin (Maria’s little brother) and why? Both of these questions are answered at the end of the book. The ending was so mind-blowing, and it leaves so many questions unanswered. I almost couldn’t wrap my mind around what happened, or how. Melinda Metz is amazing with cliffhanger endings, and she truly does leave you eager to pick up the next book.

*This review is a guest review I did for the blog Mel Erin & Regina Read-A-Lot. To read the original review, check it out here*

As a fan of the Roswell television series, I was a little reluctant to read the books, especially when I found out the books actually preceded the television show. I had fallen in love the with actors who played the characters, and so many things get changed in the process of creating a show or movie based on a book.

I was pleasantly surprised by Vanished. There are a lot of differences in the character descriptions, and several differences in the powers each character has. But the similarities were heart-warming. Isabel is just as snarky. Liz is just as logical. Michael seems a little nicer in the books, although I’ve only read the one, so who knows? I absolutely love that Maria is just as New Age-y and scatterbrained in the books. I don’t think I could have pictured her any other way. I’m still torn with Max. He doesn’t feel like he’s as strong a leader in the books as he is in the show, but maybe I just need to keep reading to see.

We learn a lot about the collective consciousness in this book. I loved this. In the television show, Max, Michael and Isabel have virtually no contact with their home planet, and I found this to be a really awesome thing that the books did, but that was not included in the show.

I adore Alex and Isabel. So much. I wish more could have come from their relationship in the show, and I was giddy when I read that they had a relationship in the book. But then I read what happened to Alex, and I was really upset. This was probably one of my least favorite parts of the book. Poor Alex just can’t catch a break!

One of the coolest powers mentioned is Michael’s ability to sense and smell auras. I was a little confused as to whether or not Max and Isabel could do this, as well. I understand why it wasn’t included in the television show – it would have been impossible to depict it visually. That, or really annoying. I also thought it was interesting that Liz and Maria could add their auras/energies to the aliens to strengthen them. That, if I remember correctly, wasn’t in the books and while I don’t understand how it works, it was very awesome to read and visualize.

Now for the bad… Well, not bad, really. These are just the things that I didn’t enjoy about this book. I didn’t like Adam. He felt like a useless character. Maybe there’s more to him Maybe I need to keep reading and I’ll end up liking him. I hated the differences between Sheriff Valenti and Kyle in the television show versus the books. It made me so sad! Also, this book in general just kind of felt like filler. I don’t feel like a lot was accomplished; mostly, it just moved the storyline forward.

The last chapter was… Whoa! While the book as a whole felt like filler, the last chapter had an epic cliffhanger. I have so many questions, and I’m so glad I can read book 8 (The Rebel) next to see what happens!

That Time I Fell in Love with an Indie Bookstore

In the past, I have only stepped into a a few independent bookstores. The biggest being the Northshire Bookstore in Vermont. Other than that, I usually just go to used bookstores when I’m not hitting up Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or the Strand.

Until now.

I have now discovered an amazing independent bookstore, and I’ve fallen in love.

Voracious Reader

The Voracious Reader is located in Larchmont, NY near New Rochelle. Its focus is on children’s and Young Adult books. And it’s amazing. From there website:

The Voracious Reader began, in part, for want of more bookshelves and always, always, more books. Perhaps, just as wonderful as an overabundance of books, was the thought of scores of eager young readers with whom they might be shared.

We had the very good fortune of opening our doors to just such voracious readers in the spring of 2007. In they flocked with their delighted parents, beloved aunts and uncles, doting grandparents, attentive nannies … and best of all, their insatiable appetites for wonderful books of all sorts.

From babies’ first board books to the latest novels for teens, our shelves are brimming with splendid offerings. Our cheerful and knowledgeable staff is pleased to help with your selections.

More than a bookstore, The Voracious Reader hopes to serve as a community hub for young readers and their families and helpers, offering reading clubs, workshops, story times, book-themed birthday parties, author signings, events and more.

We are family friendly with a deep caring and respect for young people of all ages and abilities. Our mission is to do our part in nurturing the next generation of book lovers. We do not subscribe to the pedagogical view of “making learning fun.” We believe learning IS fun, and challenging, and joyful and very individual and something humans innately desire.

The selection was amazing. I found two books I have never seen anywhere else, one I was looking for and one the proprietress, Francine, suggested.

Level 2 Bloodspell

I had heard about Level 2 (written by Lenore Applhans) from Christina at Ensconced in YA via some signed swag she sent me. When I spotted the book, I flipped out, because I and never seen it at Barnes & Noble. The Voracious Reader had one copy, so I grabbed it.

And Francine (the proprietress) recommended Bloodspell by Amalie Howard based on what I liked to read. She also gave me a bookmark for Amalie’s new book Waterfell, book one of The Aquarathi series, which also looks amazing.

I also found a signed copy of Shadowlands by Kate Brian. I already own this book, but I love Kate Brian and I don’t have anything signed by her, so when I saw this, I flipped out and bought it!

Shadowlands Picture 1

And, to make my visit even better? Francine and I started talking about blogging, BEA and ALA. I expressed my regret at having not gotten to go to either, and she asked me which ARCs I had hoped to get while there. And then she surprised me.. And she went in the back and she came out with two ARCs. Two ARCs that she was willing to part with. And then I got to go in the back and see what else she had, and I snagged a third ARC. I was shocked, humbled, grateful… It made my day. I don’t think I was able to truly express to her how much it made my day! Her kindness nearly brought me to happy tears. So in addition to the books I brought home with me, I also came home with these ARCs:

Picture 2 Picture 3

If my insane gushing and millions of pictures didn’t get my point across, let me simply state it: If you live within 10, 15, 25, even 50 miles of The Voracious Reader, you MUST go there. It will be worth the trip, trust me! It was an incredible visit, and I’m completely in love with this Independent bookstore.

I do ask you, kindly, not to go there just to ask for ARCs. This would be rude. I didn’t ask for the ARCs I was given; they were gifted to me, and it would be unfair to go simply for a chance to get your hands on them. They didn’t have many they could part with, and to expect them to just hand them over would be – again – rude.

BUT, if you’re looking for a cool Indie bookstore, then head on over ASAP!

One last thing before I go: If you live nearby and are a Veronica Roth fan, The Veracious Reader will be doing an Allegiant Midnight Release party on October 21st, 2013. And if you Pre-order Allegiant, you will be entered into a raffle to win this awesome poster:

Allegiant Pre-Order

So go forth and pre-order! Their contact information can be found here.

Waiting on Wednesday (#6): Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins

Hey everyone. Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine. Its purpose is to highlight upcoming releases we’re dying to get our hands on.

rebel belle

Harper Price, peerless Southern belle, was born ready for a Homecoming tiara. But after a strange run-in at the dance imbues her with incredible abilities, Harper’s destiny takes a turn for the seriously weird. She becomes a Paladin, one of an ancient line of guardians with agility, super strength and lethal fighting instincts.

Just when life can’t get any more disastrously crazy, Harper finds out who she’s charged to protect: David Stark, school reporter, subject of a mysterious prophecy and possibly Harper’s least favorite person. But things get complicated when Harper starts falling for him–and discovers that David’s own fate could very well be to destroy Earth.

With snappy banter, cotillion dresses, non-stop action and a touch of magic, this new young adult series from bestseller Rachel Hawkins is going to make y’all beg for more.

I’m a HUGE Rachel Hawkins fan. I loved the Hex Hall series. I haven’t read School Spirits yet, but it looks amazing. If you don’t know, it’s a spin-off (stand-alone) to the Hex Hall series.

Rebel Belle sounds amazing, interesting, unique – Edelweiss describes it as Buffy with a southern twist. Uhm… I NEED THIS BOOK NOW!!!!!! I LOVE Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I love Rachel Hawkins. That’s, like, the BEST combination, ever!

Unortunately, Rebel Belle doesn’t release until April 2014 – That’s such a long time from now!!! *Pouts and sniffles*
