Seventeen-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso knows all about unrequited love—she’s lived through it twenty-six times. She crushes hard and crushes often, but always in secret. Because no matter how many times her twin sister, Cassie, tells her to woman up, Molly can’t stomach the idea of rejection. So she’s careful. Fat girls always have to be careful.

Then a cute new girl enters Cassie’s orbit, and for the first time ever, Molly’s cynical twin is a lovesick mess. Meanwhile, Molly’s totally not dying of loneliness—except for the part where she is. Luckily, Cassie’s new girlfriend comes with a cute hipster-boy sidekick. Will is funny and flirtatious and just might be perfect crush material. Maybe more than crush material. And if Molly can win him over, she’ll get her first kiss and she’ll get her twin back.

There’s only one problem: Molly’s coworker Reid. He’s an awkward Tolkien superfan with a season pass to the Ren Faire, and there’s absolutely no way Molly could fall for him. Right?

This book was so freaking adorable!!! Describing a book as “down to earth” like you would a person seems weird, but that’s exactly what this book is – down to earth. The characters were incredible and beyond relatable. The writing was magnificent. And the plot was intriguing and held my attention until the very last page. Becky Albertalli is an incredible story teller. Much like her first book, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, this was an adorable coming-of-age story that everyone should read!

For me, Molly is the most relatable character I have ever come across. I don’t talk much about myself or my personal life, but like Molly, I’m fat, Jewish and have anxiety. Those three things alone make her incredibly relatable, but there were other things mentioned throughout the book that made her EVEN MORE relatable. I’m not ready to specifically name/discuss those things, but if you’ve read the book, Molly could be my Personality Twin. I felt like I was her, or she was me, or something like that. She is now one of my favorite characters of all time.

I loved how complex Molly and Cassie’s relationship was. It’s very common in YA novels for the siblings to not get along at all, to despise each other. I’m not saying that doesn’t happen in real life. But sometimes, siblings DO get along. Or get along sometimes, but not always. And I loved that this book showed that. It showed how close Molly and Cassie were, but also showed that siblings can fight and drift and still love each other. It was so refreshing to see and I wish more YA books showed that.

Molly, Cassie, Olivia and Mina are squad goals. Cassie and Mina were adorable together and I loved the way they made sure to include Molly and Olivia in almost everything they did. But I also liked the way they showed the ups and downs of friendship and the whole “balancing friends and boy/girlfriends” thing. Because it CAN be a balancing act and it’s not always easy.

Reid was AMAZING. He was kind, sweet, nerdy and funny. I wish I had a Reid in my life. I loved the progression of his relationship with Molly and how neither one played games. They were very real with each other.

Just like with Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, I loved that Molly and Cassie’s parents were THERE. Unlike so may YA books where you never see the parents and wonder if the main character even has any, Nadine and Patty were there for Molly and Cassie. They set boundaries and rules and punished the girls when they did something wrong. But they were also fair.

I don’t know what else to say about this book. This review doesn’t do the book justice AT ALL. All I can say is it was effing fantastic and if you don’t read it, you’re missing out. So go buy it and go read it ASAP.

Hey everyone! The Door in the Alley (The Explorers #1) by Adrienne Kress just celebrated its Book Birthday on Tuesday! Check it out!

This is one of those stories that start with a pig in a teeny hat. It’s not the one you’re thinking about. (This story is way better than that one.)

This pig-in-a-teeny-hat story starts when a very uninquisitive boy stumbles upon a very mysterious society. After that, there is danger and adventure; there are missing persons, hired thugs, a hidden box, a lost map, and famous explorers; and also a girl on a rescue mission.

The Explorers: The Door in the Alley is the first book in a series that is sure to hit young readers right in the funny bone.

Freya is myth. She is legend. And she’s about to make one hell of a comeback.

Sara Vanadi is more than she appears to be.

In her prime, she was Freya, the Norse goddess of love, beauty, war, and death. Now all that’s left of her legacy is herself. Her power comes from belief, and for an ancient goddess in the 21st century, true believers are hard to come by.

She’s been lying low for a few decades, when all of a sudden a shadowy corporation extends an offer: join them and receive unlimited strength and believers—or refuse and be destroyed. Sara chooses neither; she flees with the help of a new friend named Nathan.

With a modern power rising that wishes to bend the divine to its will, Sara decides to fight back—but first she needs some new clothes.

When I finished Alex & Eliza and went to pick this up, I fell into a reading slump. I had a lot going on and I was super stressed and just couldn’t focus on reading. I didn’t read for nearly a month! And then a 6 hour flight forced me to read and I FINALLY picked this up and got into it and HOLY CRAP I LOVED IT SO HARD!!!! This was definitely one of my favorite reads of 2017! The cover is gorgeous, the writing is amazing and the characters are epic!

I loved Freya (the character) so much. She has so much personality and spunk! I love that she’s so body positive (“Body-image apocalypse.” Bahaha!) and that she embraces beauty and fashion. She’s hilarious, too. I loved the juxtaposition of her “goddess of love” and “warrior goddess” personas. It’s like she’s at odds with herself, yet she’s two perfect halves that make a fierce whole. As far as heroines go, she’s up there with Feyre, Celaena, Alina and Suze, in my opinion.

Nathan is an interesting character. In the beginning, he was cool, but nothing fantastic. As the story went on, however, I really started liking him. He was so loyal to Freya, despite her insane life and how it put him in danger at every turn. I also loved the role reversal that went on. Usually it’s the human girl running after the vampire boy or whatever, but this time the human boy is running after the goddess. Nice change of pace!

Dionysus is effing hilarious, if not arrogant and cocky. He reminded me of Casanova from Karen Chance’s Cassandra Palmer series. In fact, the entire vibe of this book reminder me of the Cassie Palmer books. So if you were a fan of those, I recommend this book! Following that train of thought, I loved that their “hideout” was at a Disney theme park. It was like a kiddie version of Dante’s!

Another character I liked was Sekhmet. She was cold and calculating, but in an intriguing way. I can’t wait to see more of her in the sequel (Because yes, there’s a sequel and I fangirl about that in the last paragraph, so see below!)

I’ve always been fascinated by Greek mythology, but lately, I’ve just wanted to read books about ANY and ALL mythologies, so I LOVED being introduced to so many pantheons in this book. There were so many gods and goddesses (Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Hindu, Hawaiian) I’ve never heard of and now want to research and read more about, like Izanami (Izanami-no-Mikoto), a Japanese goddess. She’s Queen of Yomi and mother of the gods. “Once giver of life, now its destroyer,” as described in the book. Now I want to know her full mythology!

The ending of this book was INSANE and EPIC and I’m SO, SO, happy that there’s a sequel, but WHY IS IT NOT COMING OUT UNTIL MARCH 2018, THAT’S TOO LONG A WAIT!!! *SOBS!!!!*

So, yes, I HIGHLY recommend this to fans of mythology and to fans of the Cassandra Palmer books!

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Witches of East End and The Descendants comes the love story of young Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler.

1777. Albany, New York.

As battle cries of the American Revolution echo in the distance, servants flutter about preparing for one of New York society’s biggest events: the Schuylers’ grand ball. Descended from two of the oldest and most distinguished bloodlines in New York, the Schuylers are proud to be one of their fledgling country’s founding families, and even prouder still of their three daughters—Angelica, with her razor-sharp wit; Peggy, with her dazzling looks; and Eliza, whose beauty and charm rival that of both her sisters, though she’d rather be aiding the colonists’ cause than dressing up for some silly ball.

Still, she can barely contain her excitement when she hears of the arrival of one Alexander Hamilton, a mysterious, rakish young colonel and General George Washington’s right-hand man. Though Alex has arrived as the bearer of bad news for the Schuylers, he can’t believe his luck—as an orphan, and a bastard one at that—to be in such esteemed company. And when Alex and Eliza meet that fateful night, so begins an epic love story that would forever change the course of American history.

In the pages of Alex and Eliza, #1 New York Times bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz brings to life the romance of young Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler.

Though I haven’t seen Hamilton (yet), I’m a HUGE fan of Melissa de la Cruz and historical fiction. So this book has been on my radar for a LONG time – and it definitely didn’t disappoint! It was amazing, adorable and full of ships and feels!

I loved Eliza! She was defiant, feisty, sassy and snarky! I really loved how amused she was by her own efforts to rile Alex up. I completely cracked up during these scenes! One of my favorite quotes from her is this:

“She had to hand it to him. He was GOOD, this Alexander Hamilton. Under other circumstances, she might actually like him. But right now she had about seven more minutes of his time, and she was determined to make them as difficult as possible.”

Alex’s personality was so multi-faceted. On the one hand, he was this sweet-talker who charmed the ladies and “knows what he’s doing.” On the other, he was a gentleman who rattled SO easily, like when Eliza told him to watch where he put his hands and he stumbled over an apology. It made him really likable. Also, despite having not seen Hamilton on Broadway, I completely pictured Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hamilton the whole time I was reading!

I – obviously – 100% shipped Alex and Eliza right from the beginning. They were adorable together and they gave me SO MANY swoons and feels!

Another character I really loved was Aunt Gertrude!! She was pretty progressive, considering the time period she’s living in. I loved her fierce attitude and desire to protect and care for Eliza.

I really enjoyed the writing and atmosphere – though I fully expected to, since (as I mentioned) I adore Melissa de la Cruz. She always does an amazing job creating epic worlds and characters, and this book was no exception!

I definitely recommend this to fans of historical fiction, Melissa de la Cruz and Hamilton!

Blog Tour: Dream Magic by Joshua Khan (Dream Cast)

Hey everyone! I’m so excited to be on the blog tour for Dream Magic by Joshua Khan! First, here’s more about the book:

A fabulously exciting sequel to the fantasy adventure SHADOW MAGIC.

People throughout Gehenna are disappearing, even the feared executioner Tyburn. Many of the nobles believe the kidnappings to be the work of the northern trolls, raiding south for the winter, and when Baron Sable and others head off to fight them, Castle Gloom is left guarded by only the squires.

Lily is struggling with her growing necromantic powers. The castle fills with ghosts, drawn like moths to a flame by the brightness of her magic. Zombies roam the country, some left over from those raised in SHADOW MAGIC, others awakened by Lily. Families are troubled by the returning dead, so Lily tries to incorporate them into day-to-day life, much to the resentment of the living.

Then Lily is attacked in her own castle by a mysterious sorcerer known as Dreamweaver, a young man determined to conquer Gehenna using jewel-spiders, strange crystalline creatures whose bite doesn’t kill, but sends victims to sleep. Lily soon discovers that Dreamweaver is harvesting dreams to fuel his magic.

Lily enters the realm of sleep known as the Dream Time, in an attempt to awaken all the captive dreamers. Instead she finds herself trapped within a dream, one where her family is still alive. With the help of Thorn and the ever loyal Hades, she must somehow overcome the evil Dreamweaver by using his own magic against him – and reclaim her kingdom.

And now for the Dream Cast, as presented by Joshua Khan! Enjoy!

The Dream Cast for Shadow Magic

I don’t know any author who doesn’t play this game. Just between you and me we have had some film and tv interest, but Hollywood hasn’t quite come knocking, yet!

Ok, so lets pretend that Peter Jackson is looking to get back into fantasy and has invited me over to his pad in sunny New Zealand. We get out the ‘Who’s Who’s’ of the acting world and start flicking through…

TYBURN, the executioner. Tricky, he’s the ultimate badass killer, but a bit old, a bit worn out and, if you saw him in a crowded room, you really wouldn’t notice him. He’s a man doing a job, simple as that. So he can’t be Sean Bean or Idris Elba, he can’t look heroic, he’s not a hero. So I’d go for Hugo Weaving, the chap who plays Elrond in the Lord of the Rings movies.

PANDEMONIUM SHADOW. Now Pan’s a sad figure, a hero who’s past his glory days and more than a little bitter. So I want someone who was the handsome lead, ten, twenty years ago, but is showing his age and starting to play older character roles. But someone with a hint of danger, the old fires of his younger, adventurous self haven’t been totally extinguished. I had this actor in mind pretty much from Day One. James Purefoy. James has played plenty of action roles, knows how to handle a sword, and is just over fifty. Ridiculously handsome, but not pin-up. He’d need to fatten up for Pan though.

LORD IBLIS SHADOW. Lily’s dad. Tall, imposing, brooding and clever, oh so very clever. Yes, who else could it be but our own Sherlock, Benedict? Easy win, he was in my mind as I wrote Iblis. And with him as Dr. Strange, he’s already building up experience playing sorcerers!

The other key thing is you can see him and James as brothers, they both have an intensity. Benedict’s is more cerebral, James’s more physical, which suits the characters of Iblis and Pan perfectly.

SALOME SHADOW. You meet Lily’s mom in DREAM MAGIC, and she’s a big deal. A lot of Lily’s attitude comes from her mother, again something I expand upon in DREAM MAGIC. I’m a huge fan of MacBeth, so Salome has a bit of Lady M in her DNA. Here is a woman who will protect her family with cold, deadly elegance. While no sorcerer like Iblis, she had to be able to stand her own ground. In a way the Iblis/Salome dynamic is the opposite of Lily/Thorn. Thorn has no magic, like Salome, but we know Lily could never survive or grow without him. The same applies to Iblis and Salome.

So, there is only one actress that matches, Monica Bellucci. Apart from being inhumanly beautiful, she’s got a razor sharp mind and Sicilian on-top of all that. I’ve been smitten by her ever since she played a vampire bride in Bram Stoker’s Dracula back in the early 1990s. It will be a surprise to no-one that I’m a fan of all things gothic and the vampire remains my favourite monster. So, Monica forever.

MARY. This is a big role. Where would Lily be without her dear, devoted nanny? Mary’s the real no nonsense ruler of Castle Gloom. Even Iblis did as he was told when she was around. So we need someone who’s got natural authority, someone who can command even the heroes with just a raise of her eyebrow. Another easy win. There is only one actress I can think of who can do that. Dame Judi Dench. She’s even played James Bond’s boss!

Okay, now to the top four. Our young leads. This becomes tricky as the clock’s ticking. Our heroes are all young teens, so whoever I pick may age out pretty darn quick. Plus I’m not that up to speed with the younger generation of actors. Hey, everyone under thirty seems ridiculously young to me!

GABRIEL. There are two versions of the boy. The one projected by his magic. Handsome, glamorous, the perfect prince. Teen pin up all the way. If there was a teen Hemsworth brother, we’d be sorted. Hey, why don’t we go with that? So here’s a picture of a young Chris Hemsworth missing a shirt. You’re welcome.

K’LEEF. K’leef’s from the Sultanate of Fire. That kingdom is a mix of mythic Arabia and India, think Arabian Nights. So we need an actor from that part of the world. India has the biggest film industry in the world but few actors ever cross over to be recognised by Western audiences. So, my choice is pretty limited, even more so than just the usual batch of young actors.

Fortunately those we do have are awesome. My favourite actor right now is Riz Ahmed, but he’s for a future role as one of K’leef’s older brothers (have I mentioned Book, 3, BURNING MAGIC?).

Thus for K’leef we’ll go with Suraj Sharma, the lead from the Life of Pi. Here he is, holding a white tiger cub. Again, you’re welcome.

LILY. My kids are big fans of Victorious, it’s pretty much all that’s ever on now that Step Up seems to have finished. I’ve got the same problem here, Lily’s thirteen but I don’t know any actresses that age. I’ll have to go with Victoria Justice, though she is too old (ridiculous to use that phrase on someone barely over 20), so the casting director will have to go look for a ‘Victoria Justice’ type I suppose. Lily’s glamorous (she is a princess after all) but sharp-tongued and dedicated to her people. She’s got to act older than she is yet show she’s still a child, trying to find her way in the world, all the while bearing the burden of ruling a country. That’s a big ask for an actress.

THORN. The thing is, Thorn’s not anyone’s idea of handsome. That’s not being cruel, he just just isn’t. Sure, Gabriel has his magic to make him look the way he is, and K’leef has that dark-eyed exotic working for him. Thorn may grow up to have a rugged charm, but right now he’s just a scrappy peasant boy. What matters is his courage, and his moral compass. Alone out of the whole cast, he knows what’s right and what’s wrong. This is something I’ve spent a long time dwelling on and if you’ve come to any of my talks you’d have heard me discuss the difficulty in knowing right from wrong. So the actor has to have a determination in him, much more important that straight teeth and clear skin.

Billy Elliot is one of my fav films. Billy’s very much cut from the same cloth as Thorn. He’s unsophisticated, but honest and knows what he wants. If we could turn back the clock then we’d have the perfect actor. Any Jamie Bell types out there nowadays?

~*~*~

There we have it, my cast for SHADOW MAGIC. Of course I’d demand a walk on part for myself, a zombie in the background would suit me just fine!

Release Day Launch: Golden by K.M. Robinson (Excerpt + Giveaway)

Happy Book Birthday to K.M. Robinson and Golden (March 28, 2017, Snowy Wings Publishing)!! Today, I’ve got an excerpt and an epic giveaway for you! First, here’s more about the book:

When the girl with the golden hair betrays everyone, not even she has hope of surviving.

The stories say that Goldilocks was a naïve girl who wandered into a house one day. Those stories were wrong. She was never naïve. It was all a perfectly executed plan to get her into the Baers’ group to destroy them.

Trained by her cousin, Lowell, and handler, Shadoe, Auluria’s mission is to destroy the Baers by getting close to the youngest brother, Dov, his brother and sister-in-law and the leaders of the Baers’ group. When she realizes Dov isn’t as evil as her cousin led her to believe, she must figure out how to play both sides or her deception will cause everyone in her world to burn.

If her allegiances are discovered, either side could destroy her…if the Society doesn’t get her first.

Amazon

~*~*~*~

And now for the excerpt! Enjoy!!!

Preface

The condensed version of my story is this:

The girl with the long golden hair, or Goldilocks, as they would eventually call me, was awakened by one of the three bears. She had no memory of how she got there. She sat on their furniture, ate their food and slept in their home. They found her, talked to her, and ultimately chased her away. That is the story they tell.

But there are things they didn’t tell you. The stories never mention that I had been intentionally sent there to find the Baer family’s weaknesses and use them to then destroy their group. No one ever said that I would fall for the youngest. Nobody talked about how he would try to save me, even when I couldn’t be save. And they never said my entire world would come crashing down around me as I tried to save him and betray the only family I had left.

I am Auluria, and this is my real story.

~*~*~

Chapter 1

The first thing I smelled was sweet spices. A wave of warmth washed over me, coaxing me out of my sleep.

Someone was breathing on me.

When I opened my eyes, all I saw was blue. Blue so deep and so intense I had to blink to bring it into focus. Dark fringe fell over the blue color as it sparked and flashed, awakening me fully. Those were eyes. The most brilliant blue eyes I’d ever seen.

Then it hit me…and I panicked.

“Who are you?” I snapped, sitting up so quickly I nearly collided with the boy next to me. No, not a boy; a man.

I clutched at my collar and backed away from the figure next to me. His face fell as I scrambled away. He reached for me, but not in time to save me from falling off the far side of the small bed and landing squarely on the ground. My flailing hand slammed into a small table near the cot and sent its contents crashing to the floor beside me.

“Auluria, stop,” Blue Eyes said.

“How do you know my name?” I sputtered.

“You don’t remember?” he asked, concerned. He stepped quickly around the bed and stood at the foot of it, unsure if I’d accept his help. He reached out his hand but pulled it back looking disappointed as I recoiled.

“Are you alright?” he asked gently. He knelt to the floor submissively, trying to soothe my terror.

I looked around. I had made a mess, but I hadn’t broken anything. Still, I was confused…I had no idea what was going on.

“Who are you?” I asked again, softer this time.

“I’m Dov,” He placed his hand over his heart as he spoke. “You know me.”

Breathing heavily, I tried to calm my gasping.

“Why am I here?”

“You came here. You came with me. You don’t remember?”

“No,” I didn’t remember anything about him.

“We only just met yesterday. You’ve had quite an experience,” he spoke softly to me, as if trying to calm a child. “It’s okay that you don’t remember. You will.”

He couldn’t have been much older than me, maybe a year or two. The man was tall when he was standing, I could tell even from down on the floor. He had long, strong arms. Something about the way he brushed the hair back out of his eyes set me at ease.

I started to stand and he rose with me. He never took his eyes off me.

“And just how did we meet, Dov?”

“Come. Sit down and I’ll tell you. Would you like something to drink? Water perhaps?”

I slowly made my way to the table at the far end of the room. I started to sink into one of the mismatched chairs.

“Actually, maybe not that one,” Dov said, skirting around me and pulling out another chair. “This one is much more comfortable.”

I obliged, though I didn’t know why.

“Here,” He said handing me a glass of cool water. “Are you hungry? I can make you something.”

Without waiting for me to respond he walked over and started the stove. He reached for a pan and busied himself making food.

“So, why am I here?” I prompted after a few minutes of watching him cook. Once I was convinced he wasn’t going to hurt me, I relaxed back into the seat and watched him work. It calmed my nerves to see him methodically creating breakfast.

“You are here, Auluria, for a great many reasons,” he said dramatically, his grin making his eyes sparkle again, “One of which happens to be…”

The door flew open, interrupting him. I jumped as it crashed against the wall. Turning to look at the noise, I sent my hair cascading over the back of the chair and around to my shoulder where it hit me in the face before falling into my lap.

“Well, look who’s up,” a woman said, scoffing, “Sleeping Beauty.”

“I can’t believe you brought her back here, Dov. She’s nothing but trouble,” the man said. He was an older, darker version of Dov. He seemed to be plagued by something heavy. Even his steps were weighted as he moved about the room, as if dragged down by some invisible chain.

“Are you hungry?” Dov asked ignoring their comments.

I watched as the woman glanced around the room. Her eyes fell on the bed. Its sheets were tangled from my fall. The man followed her gaze. They both cast Dov looks, raising their eyebrows at him. No one said anything. Suddenly, I was extremely self-conscious.

“Well, well, baby brother. Looks like you have a story to tell,” the man howled with laughter. My cheeks burned and I ducked my head.

“Enough, Berwyn.” The woman said quietly. She looked aside as he cast her a disparaging glance.

“Auluria doesn’t remember us,” Dov sounded annoyed.

“Oh, but we remember her.” Berwyn said, making it sound like a bad thing.

I couldn’t figure out what I had done to these people to make them so vicious toward me. Well, not all of them, but it was clear the man and woman were not pleased to find me there.

“I thought we told you to get rid of her,” he said seriously, making my stomach jump into my throat. He slammed his fist against a table, Dov ducked as though he had been hit.

“I won’t and you know why. She won’t hurt us; she’s more likely to help us than anything else.”

“Let her stay, Berwyn. I think it would be nice to have another girl around, and besides Dove’s been alone for so long, it’s nice he has someone,” I couldn’t tell if she was being helpful or mocking.

“It is kind of a pain that he’s always a third wheel I guess.” The big man relented.

“See? I knew it would work out.” The girl said, her mid-length blond curls bouncing as she strode toward
him.

I opened my mouth to speak, but Dov caught my attention and signaled me to stay quiet with a quick shake of his head.

“Come on,” the man finally said, leading the woman away.

I looked back to the stove where Dov was, but he was already at my side setting down a plate.

“That’s my brother, Berwyn, and his wife, Eden,” he said as a matter of fact.

“They’re married?” I said shocked. “He can’t be more than twenty-five.”

“Twenty-four, actually.”

“How old is she?”

“Eden’s twenty-three,” he replied. “Do you want more water?”

“Dov, why am I here?” I asked again, trying to get him to focus. I needed answers.

“Do you remember being in the forest yesterday?” he asked me.

I shook my head.

“Well, I don’t know why you were in the woods, but that’s where I met you. You were running through the forest and you jumped over a small stream.

“I saw you flying through the air and thought ‘what must this crazy girl be doing to be running so quickly through such a dense part of the forest?’ When you landed, you took three whole steps before you came face to face with me.

“I’d never seen a more panicked look in all my life. You clutched your skirts in your hand and whipped your head from side to side. I’d never seen such long hair on a girl; when it finally settled, it ran past your waist,” he said as if I didn’t know how long my hair was.

“And when you looked back to me, you whispered ‘help.’ I could see in your eyes that you were in trouble.” He said with grandeur, illustrating his story with his hands, “So I took you by the waist and spun you into the trees. We ducked behind some large rocks and hid among the vines. You were breathing so loudly I thought you were going to give us away.

I wondered how the story would sound if he dropped his dramatic tone. I assumed he was using it to try to keep me engaged.

“What was I running from?” I interrupted.

“Men. There were men chasing you. You refused to tell me why,” he grinned as if it were all a game. I was in no mood for games.

“Once the first group of men chasing you were gone you started off again, barely throwing a ‘thank you’ over your shoulder. But I couldn’t let you go alone, not after what I had seen, so I walked with you.”

I hoped he would get to the point, but he had more to describe in detail.

“You only tolerated me for so long until you started throwing things at me. An apple. A tree branch. Some small pebbles. I admit, it hurt my feelings a bit.”

He frowned playfully, but his eyes sparked to life from under his dark hair.

But… persist I did, and I followed you for the better part of an hour, talking at you the whole time. That is, until I was attacked. In my blind disregard for my own safety,” he waved his hand to the side, as if I should be impressed, “I hadn’t realized where we had wandered. I was taken completely by surprise when those guys jumped out of the trees and landed on top of me.”

He laughed, his eyes lighting up. “But you, for as surprised as you were, ran right at us and tackled Jake to the ground. He hit the dirt so hard that it knocked the wind right out of him. I’m sure he couldn’t ever believe a girl would ever consider dating him, much less throwing herself at him like you did.”

I felt my eyes grow wide at his teasing words. He was only joking, a play on words, but still, I would never throw myself at a man in that context. It vexed me that he would insinuate that I might.

“Once I took out Marty, we found ourselves in the clear. That didn’t stop us from trying to make a fast getaway though. We almost made it too, but somehow Jake struggled to his feet and he went after you. Just as I subdued Marty and placed him on the ground, I lifted my head and saw Jake barreling toward you.

“I couldn’t make it to you in time. The sound it made when he hit you…it was almost as if I could feel it from as far away as I was,” He offered me a sad look, his eyes clouding.

“If it’s any consolation, I slammed his face into a tree and messed him up pretty bad. You insisted that you were fine, but you could barely stand. I scooped you up and carried you.

“We talked all the way back here. Well, mostly I did,” I refrained from rolling my eyes. Of course, he had been the talkative one. “You told me your name and then you asked a few questions before deciding to stay quiet. So as of right now, all I know is that your name is Auluria. You have long hair. You’re running from something and you are being chased. And you’re looking for a place to belong-though I added that last part on my own.”

He counted his points off on his fingers for me as he summarized what had occurred yesterday.

“And what did you tell me about yourself?”

“Well, as you know, my name is Dov. Baer is my last name. You’ve met my brother and his wife yesterday briefly, and again today. As you can see, my brother doesn’t trust you, but don’t take offense, he doesn’t trust anyone.

“You can’t really blame him with all that’s going on,” he continued, “it’s hard to trust anyone these days.”

“I suppose.”

I looked down to my dress, covered with dirt and mud at the bottom. There were a few small holes that I assumed occurred during my fall. That’s when I remembered.

I had been running. I just couldn’t remember why.

I remembered meeting him though. As the men gained on me, I leapt over a river, almost directly into Dov’s arms. He hid me until the men passed. I never told him of the danger I must have surely been in and he was in for being with me.

“You remember,” Dov voice changed, snapping back to the conversation.

“I remember,” I nodded. “Thank you for your help yesterday.”

“Anything for a pretty lady,” he half bowed to me from his seat next to mine.

“Now, tell me Auluria, why were you running from those men yesterday?” he grew serious again, wanting more information from me.

“They were chasing me,” I said simply.

He chuckled. “But why?”

I swallowed hard. “I don’t know.”

“You don’t remember?”

“It picks up from where I ran into you,” his eyes narrowed intently, but soft enough to know he was concerned, not angry.

“Where do you belong, Auluria? We have to get you back to where it’s safe.” He took my hand in his own hands, the gesture so sudden that it shocked me into stillness. I let him hold my hand in his while his eyes searched me for answers.

“I…I don’t belong anywhere.” That was the truth. I never belonged there. “And do you really think going back is safe, since that’s where I was coming from in the first place?”

Little flashes of memory floated through my mind. Not enough to blend together and form a picture, but pieces all the same.

“You will tell me eventually, Auluria,” he said withdrawing his hand. He looked genuinely hurt that I wouldn’t divulge any new information.

I didn’t like that he thought I knew more than I was saying.

“You can stay here until you’re ready,” he added quietly, almost to himself.

I looked at him and it was as if he read my mind.

“You’ll be safe here. They won’t find you and Berwyn won’t hurt you. I’ll make sure of it.”

That thought scared me. If this man was telling me I’d be safe from his brother, then what was so bad about his brother that made it potentially unsafe?

“Finished?” he interrupted my thoughts. Lifting my plate, he turned to the sink.

I watched as he washed the dishes, his shoulder rising and falling as he worked. His muscles looked stiff at times, seizing with pain. My gaze lingered on them as he worked. I watched his chest expand and shrink as he breathed.

When he turned, it startled me. Dov only raised an eyebrow and smirked. He nodded his head for me to join him in the makeshift living room, walking away from the kitchen.

Just as we started to sit, I blurted out, “What did you mean? ‘Protect me from Berwyn’?”

“Oh. I see you don’t remember all of yesterday after your rescue.” He added apologetically, “Berwyn, is just a lot to handle at times. Sometimes he gets a little too upset. At times, he says or does things without thinking. It’s nothing to worry about, he won’t hurt you, he’s just… loud sometimes.”

As if emphasizing his brother’s point, at that very moment Berwyn crashed into the room and slammed the door behind him. He glared at us before stomping through the kitchen and marching out the door.

Eden appeared, rolling her eyes. She looked over to her young brother-in-law and gestured around the room.

Baby, you need to get this taken care of,” she turned on her heels and retreated the way she came.

I looked to Dov. “Baby?” I giggled.

“Oh, be quiet,” he said, throwing a pillow at me as he stood, careful to avoid my face.

“Let me help you,” I responded, rising to follow him, knowing that I owed him for his help the day before.

We started cleaning up the mess around the room. Bottles lay strewn about the floor. Unfolded laundry sat in a pile on a chair. It looked like there had been a celebration that someone forgot to clean up after.

“How’s your head feeling?” he asked as we worked.

“It’s okay,” I said, feeling more secure about being alone with him. “What happened in here anyway?”

“Berwyn and Eden had a fight yesterday. It’s best to get out of the house when that happens.” He stooped to sweep up pieces of broken glass. “They never hurt each other, but they sure do know how to make it sound good.”

“Was it about me?” I asked.

“It started out about you, but most of this is from after.”

I helped him straighten the room. His eyes flitted over to me every so often, making sure I wasn’t going to pass out from my injury the previous day.

The quiet that stretched between us was almost comforting. I’ve always liked the silence. It means that you are comfortable enough with a person that you don’t feel the need to fill up the space with words. You can just exist together.

****

Berwyn and Eden didn’t make another appearance until that evening. Dov had suggested I take a nap to help regain my strength, so after lunch I lay on the couch under a light blanket. It really was too warm for a blanket, but I liked the protection it offered me.

I never truly drifted off to sleep. While I felt safe in that house, I knew I didn’t really know these people very well and I didn’t want to trust them too quickly.

“She’s still here.” Berwyn grumbled.

“I told you, we’re not sending her back out there. She’s being hunted and she can’t remember by whom or why. We have to protect her.”

“Stop it, Berwyn.” Eden interrupted before he could say anything. “I don’t like it either, but he’s right. We’re not sending her back out there until we have some answers. Your father started this whole thing to help people, so you need to help people. And start with her.” I heard the edge in her voice when she talked about me. Maybe she hadn’t been sincere about letting me stay.

“Fine,” He huffed. “For now.”

I kept my eyes closed, feigning sleep, and waited for them to leave. I heard their steps creak across the floorboards as they walked out of the room. A moment later I felt the couch arm dip slightly as someone leaned on it.

“You heard that, didn’t you?” his gentle voice asked.

I opened my eyes. “Yeah.” I acknowledged.

He took a deep breath and sighed. “At least he’s letting you stay.”

“For now,” I added.

“For now,” He said, worry slightly edging into his voice.

That probably wasn’t their best choice.

Since Bryn is the only crossbreed at the Institute for Excellence, all eyes are on her, but it’s a particular black dragon, Zavien, who catches her attention.

At the Institute, old grudges, new crushes, and death threats are all part of a normal day for Bryn. Don’t just fight the system…burn it.

Since discovering she is a shape-shifting, fire-breathing dragon on her sixteenth birthday (surprise!), Bryn McKenna’s world has been thrown into chaos. Being a “crossbreed”—part Red dragon and part Blue—means Bryn will never fit in. Not with dragon society. Not with the archaic and controlling Directorate. And definitely not when she has striped hair and a not-so-popular affection for rule-breaking…

But sneaking around with her secret boyfriend, Zavien, gets a whole lot harder when he’s betrothed to someone else. Someone who isn’t a mixed breed and totally forbidden. And for an added complication, it turns out Bryn’s former archnemesis Jaxon Westgate isn’t quite the evil asshat she thought. Now she’s caught between her desire to fit in and a need to set things on fire. Literally.

Because if Bryn can’t adapt to the status quo…well, then maybe it’s time for her to change it.

Bryn’s hopes for a peaceful new semester at school go up in smoke when someone tries to kill her—again. She’s not sure which is scarier, facing the radicals who want to sacrifice her for their cause, or her impending nightmare of a Directorate-arranged marriage to her nemesis, Jaxon.

The one bright spot in her life is Valmont, her smoking-hot knight who is assigned to watch over her twenty-four hours a day. Is what she feels for him real or just a side effect of the dragon-knight bond? At this point, stopping the impending civil war might be easier than figuring out her love life.

She may have to live in their world, but she doesn’t have to play by their rules.

Bryn McKenna has it all. Even though she’s a hybrid dragon, she’s finally fitting in the new shape-shifting dragon world that’s become her own. But her grandparent’s want to ruin everything by making Bryn’s nightmare of an arranged marriage to Jaxon Westgate a reality. It doesn’t help that Jaxon’s father is on a witch hunt for Rebel sympathizers and Bryn finds herself in his line of fire.

If she doesn’t say “I do,” she’ll lose everything. Good-bye flying. Good-bye best friends. Good-bye magic. But if she bends to her grandparents’ will and agrees to marry Jaxon she’ll lose the love of her life—her knight.

A ridiculously cute, formerly-famous new guy dropping into your life? It's practically every girl's dream.

But not Jules McCallister-Morgan's.

I realize that on paper I look like your standard type-A, neurotic, overachiever. And maybe I am. But I didn't get to be the editor of my school's long-revered newspaper by just showing up*. I have one main goal for my senior year-early acceptance into my first choice Ivy League college-and I will not be deterred by best friends, moms who think I could stand to "live a little," or boys.

At least, that was the plan before I knew about Alex Powell**.

And before Alex Powell betrayed me***.

I know what you're thinking: Calm down, Jules. But you don't understand. This stuff matters. This is my life. And I'm not going down without a fight.

----

* Okay, I sort of did. But it's a sore subject.

** I mean, I guess everyone knows about Alex Powell? Two years ago, you couldn't go anywhere without hearing about viral video boy band sensation Chaos 4 All. Two years ago, Alex Powell was famous.

***Some people think I'm overreacting. But this. Means. War.

Filled with romance, rivalry, and passive-aggressive dog walking, Amy Spalding delivers a hilariously relatable high school story that's sure to have you falling for The New Guy.

Sometimes I want a lengthy, highly descriptive, fantasy world to get sucked into and other times I was a fast, fun read. The New Guy (And other Senior Year Distractions) fell into the latter.

I quickly read it one afternoon and it was just the right amount of fun I was looking for to escape that particular day.

Jules was the first thing that I enjoyed. I always think that YA can use more girls who know exactly what they want and Jules has her future plans down to an exact science of what grades and extra activities she needs to get early admission into an Ivy League. Yes, a smart female lead! I’m here for it!

Enter Alex who is a new student and formerly a member of a highly popular boyband (think a short lived One Direction.) He is the start of a mess of problems for Jules including a rivalry with the school newspaper and now broadcast news.

While I did enjoy Jules’ character from the beginning, there were also plenty of times I got frustrated with how much she was worried about herself. Sure, it was important that she reached her goals, but it was often at the expense of her friends.

Whatever problems Jules had in maintaining her friendships, she did have a great support system in her moms. They were great and really cared about their daughter.

All in all, Jules’ story and struggles still maintained a relatability despite the LA location and former pop star new kid. There are always kids working themselves harder than you’d believe to reach their goals and there are always going to be rivalries between other students. For the most part, I still got the sense that these were real teenagers who could be from anywhere based on their goals and feelings.

While this might have been a quick read, it definitely had the nostalgia of high school for me that I remembered with struggling to maintain too many things at once. The New Guy will be a perfect read for a high school student who needs a break from working hard or even for someone who wants to briefly remember what it was like to be focused on the times they’re in now that was once on a future goal.
